I'm loathe to put this in skin geek but there's nowhere else for it to go!#

I currently offer manually applied Fake Bake tans and am wondering about whether to offer FB spray tans too. I wonder if those of you with salons offer both, and how they would sit together? Do you do more of one sort or the other? Did the one offering suffer when you introduced the other? Which is the more popular/profitable? Did your reputation suffer?

Thanks for your opinions!

I only do spray tanning BUT I cant see how anything would suffer by offering both, in my opinion it gives your client more options. Spray tanning is a quick instant treatment whereas the manual tanning is much more of a treatment, in my opinion anyway. I think they will bring in two different types of clients for you, which can only be good for profit margins!

That's what I was thinking, Toni. Maybe it would draw in younger clients because it's cheaper?

Hi Hun,
I only offer spray tan, But I do use Sun Lab express in a bottle on myself, basically the same as the sun lab I spray with, but it is applied with a special mit, I use it if hubby doesn't have time to spray me, then all I do is ask him to do my back, I can do all the rest myself, but there is a difference between the liquids, the spray seems a bit sticky for a while, but the sun lab express in the bottle dries very quickly and you can go out with it on, doesn't seem to rub off. Showers off lovely too.
Sorry I havn't really answered your question, I would expect that when you start to offer spray tans, they will be much more popular than manually applied tans, especially with bigger girls, as I find my bigger girls get a bit more embarrassed about baring all.......I always assure them, they are allways pleased after their spray tans.
Best wishes with whichever you go with, to offer both is probably best. Spraying I would think is much quicker too.
Lotsa luv x   x

Yeah its also quick and instant, in my experience younger (17-25) clients have such hectic lifes its all they want, 10 mins, instant tan, not too costly, great result! But you can also take that speedy aspect of spray tanning and brainstorm how many other avenues it opens up, the possibilities are endless!! But it certainly wont detract from the manual tan, I am a die hard spray tan addict but oh for the days of the manual St tropez, I loved the luxury of the treatment!!

Hi, I'm also considering starting spray tanning as an add-on to Fake Bake lotion. Most of my tan clients enjoy the "treat" of having it applied, however, looking at profits, being able to tan several girls at a party is VERY appealing.

It will be interesting to see other replies to this thread.

I offer both the spray and lotion tanning in my salon

Clients seem to love to have the choice and tend to ask our advice, which is when you can impress them with your tanning knowledge and get them desperate to book with you!

I find that I do a lot more spray tans to cream tans, probably about 10:1 and find that the spray tans are more profitable

I find that 30yo and younger tend to book for the spray and 30+ tend to go for the lotion as they see it as more of a 'luxury treatment' - if that makes sense xx

When I worked from home I did a lot of Fake Bake tans as my clients would come in the evenings in their PJs.

Since being salon based (last 6 years) I have done loads of spray tans and haven't even been asked for a manual tan in the last 2 years!

Most of my spray tan clients are under 30 and my oldest spray tan client is in her 70s.

Forgive me if the answer's really obvious Calla, but why are were you loathe to put this in skin geek? x

I offer Tantrick spray tans which are most popular but I do offer St Tropez original lotion tan which I do have some clients who prefer these, I would offer both I find it works for me ;)

For me, skin geek should be about facials, massage, body wraps, etc. Although there could be a case for having a holistic geek for aromatherapy massage, candling (yes, I know!) hippy chick's stuff.
At the risk of fragmenting the site as a whole I think there's arguably a case for a sunless tanning geek as there are a lot of threads started on it.

And don't forget us other holistic geeks too Lynn!

I have had both options in my old salon and in the new salon and I have yet to be asked for a manually applied tan. All of my clients want quick, in and out the door in less than 15 minutes and don't want to be buffed and rubbed by me, they would rather do it themselves at home.

Why don't you do a mini sort of questionnaire with all your customers and ask them what they want.
