Hello,

Can people advise what you've done about first aid courses, as I have been told that at least 1 person in the salon needs to be first aid trained.

We have someone, but they are leaving in a couple of months...

I have looked for courses briefly on the internet and they are so expensive.

Can anyone help / recommend?

I think you need someone trained in first aid only if your salon has over a certain number of staff (can't remember the exact figure).

I did a first aid course years ago with St John's Ambulance and it was excellent and extremely worthwhile. The course lasted 4 days.

There is also an "appointed person" course, which is much cheaper.
Check out your local tech college too - Eastleigh college runs the appointed person course for £45 as opposed to £95 from the HSE. The course is accredited by the HSE in both places!

Also bear in mind that once you've done a first aid course, it's often only valid for so long. My initial one lasted four days and I have to do a two day refresher <with a practical and oral test> every three years in order to retain the qualification. Just as well, because the resuscitation procedure had changed!

I think it can be a little bit of a judgement call with First Aiders too.. think it's one first aider to ever 50 members of staff but I think this is if it is a low risk environement. Different things will effect the risk level of your environment, e.g. does it have a public reception area, what tools and equipment are used, what products are used, this type of thing.

I think it's reasonable to have a qualified first aider on site and an appointed person to cover them when they are on holiday given the reception and products, equipment etc.

As for the courses, you should be able to get first aid courses fairly reasonably through your council's Lifelong Learning Centres. When I organised training in my previous post I booked all the first aid training through them and the courses were significantly less than St Johns Ambulance and HSE.

Also training centres that do modern apprenticeships and other health and safety training usually do first aid training too.

Hope this helps :)

Try business link and the unemployment centre,
both these offer free training courses and they may do a first aid one, its always worth asking, hth
