Hi Im a newbie to the site and this is my first post.

I had my mock exam on french acrylic yesterday. It was a disaster . I've done 5 french sets before but I must have cracked under pressure yesterday as it truly was really poor. They were way too thin, inconsistent, bad shadowing..blending took way tooo long and I ran out of tiime to do a proper application job.

I feel really bad too because I advertised on a website for a free set of acrylics and so my model was someone I didnt know. She was very nice and even gave me a gift. I just dont know what happened??

Im very disheartened and I have my final exam next sat..not looking forward to it.

Any advice?

Hi samee,

Welcome to salon geek, lots for you to learn and share here.

Don't let this get you down too much. We all have our good and bad days when just starting out.

You have recognized where you have gone a bit " scew wiff " & from there you can work towards improving your technique's.

I know at college you have to be aware of the time frame but I'm sure your educator would like to see 1,2.3 or 4 good nails than 10 not so crash hot ones.
Your times will improve as you progress.

All the best for your exams, & try not to be tooo hard on yourself

Samee, Dont worry about it, It is all part of learning.
We learn form our faliures and mistakes, why dont ask the model if she would be kind enough to let you practice on her again for free at home.
Im pretty sure if you expain to her which you should of already that you are training and she may not get a great set of nails or even a full set and you make take hours to do a full set but she will get them for free and it will only cost her time and patiance.
You could also ask a local salon or nail tech if you can go and sit in and watch her for a cupple of days, and you will be able to see different techniques and application, get great advice for free and loads of encouragement.
AND RELAX even if you dont pass take some time to sit in with a tech and learn more be for doing your exam again.
Rally in all your friends and rellies and practice all week. Good Luck

hey there. like the other girls said, dont be too hard on yourself! we all had to start somewhere and I'm sure your model understood that. My first set of french refills took me nearly 4 hours and most of that time was filing the acrylic into a half decent shape and thickness! One of the best things you can do is practice, pratice, pratice!! If you have trouble getting models, use a practice hand or finger and do a couple of sets everyday, you will soon be kicking butt at acrylics!!
take care and fun with it!

That's why we have mock exams so you can see were you need the work. Don't worry! Nails are much harder on yourself confidence compared to any other beauty treatments, I would not do a set of nails until years after I trained!
Take this next week to get a grip on yourself, take a deep breath... look at what you did well, you had very good marketing skills and client skills which is often much harder to teach people. You have already worked out were you went wrong, so grab a coffee, park you bum on a seat and do your research and see if you can work out what’s making these things happen, then once you have worked this out get practicing!!
I know it’s hard not to but don't worry, been able to do a good set of nails does not come over night and everyone has different nails.
Good luck

Hi Samee

Welome to the Site... Try and take a model you know with you to your next exam so that you will be more comfortable working with someone you know and then will produce a fab set of nail.. xx

I totally agree with this... I think it's more beneficial to produce fewer 'good' nails than a full set that aren't upto much.

At college last week (bearing in mind all other students are not already experienced in l&p) and only in our fourth week (students were only introduced to pink and whites the week before and week one we didn't do any practical), our tutor was expecting students to produce a full set of pink and whites ON EACH OTHER (two sets) in two and a half hours. This is forcing a student to produce a full set to ANY standard rather than to say produce 3 or 4 nails to a high standard.

I don't think you should worry.. everyone has moments like this where things don't go according to plan. The secret is not to give up. :)

Thanks guys. Yes I will aim to do good nails as apposed to finishing in the set time. Unfortunately my next model for my final exam is a random as well.

I figure I cant do a worse job then I did last time. Its funny, theory comes very natural to me and I find that extremely easy physiology, chemistry and procedures..its all a bit pointless though if your crap at practical. Im thinking of getting a nail trainer. You cant get them in Oz so will keep an eye out on ebay I guess.

Awww, sorry to hear of it all going like that Sammee. Chin up, you will do better next time.. Don't worry about times, i think it is more important to get a good set out than to be quick. Especially when still training- you are just trying to learn and put it all into practice, worry about times later.. You will be fine! I was the same at school, I was so worried about times, but i kept on going and it did take ages to do a full set but in the end they looked good and i followed correct procedure, and thats the important thing eh?

Take care, looking forward to hearing your results. xxx

Yay, I passed. Had final exam yesterday and did well! Did a full set in 2 hours and more importantly they were quality nails. They werent perfect butmy client was really happy..

so now im a fully qualified nail tech. Nearly finished beauy cert ..yay..

thanks for your support and encouragement.:Grope:
