That should be covered on your course.Unless you are self taught.

Yes self taught.

On a course! Sorry to sound flippant but if you want to 'do' nails, even just your own you need education. You can do untold, long-term damage to nails if you don't know what you need to do or, more importantly, why.

The Salon Geek is here to offer support and advice to trained Salon professionals, not teach people with no nail education to do their own nails.

Yes self taught.

Hiya ...you obviously have a interest in nails so the best advise i can give you is to take a course...it will be so worth it and you will learn far more than anything you might pick up on here....as great as this site is we cant really teach nails as its not professional.

best of luck....(there is a search option on here, type training in and there will be lots of info for you) x

Friendly advise... I would wait till your course...you will only stress yourself out, confuse yourself when its course time and possibly ruin your nails along the way.

Who's your course with hun..?

Many courses state that your nail must be enhancement free while doing them......
So really as the other geek have said- best left till you start to learn more on the course.

If you are already using professional products without the relevant training then you'll find it even harder to learn the correct application techniques, it's harder to break a bad habit (ie incorrect application technique) than it is to teach a total newbie

Honestly, do yourself a favour and put your brush down until you've had professional training, it'll be the best thing you've ever done

I have just finnish my training and i think personally that the best way for you to get a head start for when you start your course is not to be doing any practical but to do pleanty of theory.
I did and it was the best decision i made.

You will find loads of great tutorials on the site and then if you aren't sure about anything you have read you will find that ALL the geeks will be willing to help you out with any questions you have.

Pick as many brains as you can, read all the tutorials and search the threads, it's amazing what you will find.

Good luck with your course and let us know when you start :green:

see, to me if they are only lasting 2 days then i would say things are not so great.

sounds like something is fundamentaly wrong with your application or preparation. if you are working with u.v gel you could find that by working without the full knowledge of the system you or your friends and family will end up with allery to the product before you are even qualified to use it on the public. same can be said with liquid and powder acrylic, but gel can be much more difficult to handle safely.

when you start your course you will be taken through everything right from the begining..

i admire your keenness though, with enthusiasm and the right training, you could go far.

I couldn't agree more with that. The therory really is where you benefit most from a bit of a head start.

Get a copy of Doug Schoon's book, Nail Structure and Product Chemistry. It's incredibly(sp?) informative and easy to understand.
