The annoying thing is that the desing of the packaging is copied from Shellac.

Unfortunately there will be many companies that will try to copy Shellac as they know it is a brilliant and hugely successful product.

Don't be fooled by what's on the outside, it's what's on the inside that matters and you can be sure that these products are nothing like the real CND Shellac.

CND are well aware of all of these companies and this is why the CND Shellac certified salon has come about.

If you use CND Shellac then you should sign up for this programme and let your clients know that your services have the approval of CND.

I just took a look at their website and fb page. Their website is the same, the rack stands are the same, the bottles are the same. Just another rip off company who claims there product is as good as shellac.

The sad thing is that "professionals" are actually on their fb page buying this crap.

Ah well nothing will ever compete with shellac and their product Certainly won't!

 I saw it too and was shocked by the likeness to Shellac and the similar colours, initially my first reaction was panic but having given it some thought, those who want to do it at home have been able to buy Shellac on ebay and such like places for a long time so i dont think we need to worry.
Those who come to the salon for a treatment enjoy the whole experience and usually cant paint their own nails, thats why they come. As long as we are priced fairly (think what you can afford yourselves once a fortnight) and clients have a lovely experience, then i think we will be ok.
I definately think CND need to get on to copyright and have this company looked into though! :irked:

You should see their facebook page: 14 Day Manicure | Facebook
They're telling everyone that it's the same as Shellac and telling professionals they should use it in their salon!

(Nails<3 beat me too it :p)

We should all put a comment on their Facebook page lol!

We should all put a comment on their Facebook page lol!

Lol I have and they just keep deleting it. Many others have aswell.

I would post though as everyone has the right to know. I got blocked on my business page.

The woman told me it is not shellac but it is as good as shellac but cheaper. I asked her for a list of ingredients and she deleted it.

I have just seen this 14 day manicure set on Groupon. I've never hear of them before, has anyone else and what do you think about them?

What I don't get is why they are at Dublins beauty show too if its not the real deal as there is Airbase and Beauty Express there etc. X

Don't know why, but the "Kenga File" part made me laugh.

But yeah this is quite annoying, but of course there will always be someone trying to devalue the Shellac service.

Don't think it's ever gonna be able to be stopped but oh well...the clients who really care about a good, reliable and genuine manicure service will come to us.

So I have written in the Facebook page more than 4 times. Asked by they didn't have their own brand identity, that's its actually CND not CMD the idiots and then asked for a list of ingredients... at which point my post got deleted. Funny that.

The people to inform about this are Sweet Squared. Don't get into a war of words on Facebook - it will do no good, and as some of you have found the posts get deleted anyway.
Sweet Squared will inform CND who will take all necessary steps to protect their trademark and IP.

not a lot can be done about it though. that's business.
not so much the copying of the product that i find annoying as it has and will be done again but the blatant copying of the packaging.
anyway i for one won't be buying it , i would rather support a decent company , who are there for you when you need help or advice. i think they deserve a bit of loyalty and not be ditched at the first chance to save a couple of quid on God knows what.

Au contraire, there is a great deal that can be done.
If CND have trademarked their products this company can be sued. If CND haven't trademarked it (and I feel pretty sure they will have done) the offending company can be accused of "passing off"
I suspect CND have deep enough pockets to sort this out.

I had to do a double take when i saw the groupon offer. The people that buy this for home use will not be the type of people that come to us for a professional job and no doubt NSS and discount salons will be buying it and passing it of as Shellac, am I worried, no, because again these people our not our type of customers. As the saying goes, imitation is the biggest form of flattery.

I have had a look at there FB page and people are having to ask how you remove it!

Of course it could be Bluesky Shellac in the bottles...

Strange that no other company has tried to create a hybrid gel polish - perhaps they are afraid of infringing CND's patents.

During the next year you will see a shed-load of low-cost gel polish kits coming to the UK market - expect to find them in Boots, Argus and the local supermarkets soon. I bought one last week in the USA for $49.95 and it included a LED lamp! These Kits are aimed at consumers to do at home.

The important thing to remember in the best tradition of Dads Army is "Don't Panic"! ;-)

Most customers come to you for these reasons:
  • They want someone to pamper them and give a service (think of monkeys grooming - we really haven't changed so much!)
  • They don't want to do it themselves
  • They like you and enjoy the contact
  • They want to step out of their mad world for a few moments of calm.

In other words, YOU are the brand - NOT the nail products you use! (even though it grieves me to say this as a nail product manufacturer - LOL!). Buying a professional camera does not make you a professional photographer - although it's true with commitment and dedication some people do become as skilled because they are enthusiasts, but how many salon customers will have the time and determination to do this?

What this may do is introduce more people to the idea of a long lasting manicure and drive them to the salon door. (Despite all the advertising a great many people never heard of gel polish - including nail techs who don't bother to read Scratch).

This just may backfire on these DIY Kit manufacturers. Using gel polish is not as easy as coloring your hair at home - and I think that is the benchmark for most consumers. WHen they get wrinkles, shrinkage, damage after only a few days and their nails look crap, most will simply give up and many may return the product and ask for their money back.

In Ukraine and Russia (and probably other countries too), it's always been possible for the consumer to buy any professional nail, hair or beauty product. There are a lot of DIY'ers, but most of them don't just use the products for themselves and make nails for customers on their kitchen table to earn extra money (it's possible the same could happen in the UK with these new Kits). But still these countries have produced some of the world's best nail technicians and nail artists, there are better schools there than you find in Western Europe, and the professional salons keep on making good money (more than most salons in Europe make if you consider their tax system).

The way the pro salons in Ukraine and Russia compete to win business, is to keep taking classes and developing their skills. They totally understand that THEY are the brand and this is something that more European nail techs need to learn. Once you understand this and start to invest in yourself every year as part of a long term business plan, then discount salons and DIY'ers will never affect you, and you will also win customers from other professional salons in your area who don't make that investment.

The only salons that fail do so because they are poor at business and/or make below average nails. To be honest, it's good for the overall industry that they do fail. If you are too lazy to read a book on marketing or to take a class, then you deserve all you get.

Unfortunately, as I have traveled to different countries I have come to understand that there are many companies in this nail business that simply want to make a buck and don't care less about nail techs or the professionalism of the industry. They pander to the inexperienced nail techs who want to buy cheap, want to buy the latest gimmick, or want to do nail art - without first learning their craft. Many of these companies don't even employ a nail tech and are simply grey suits feeding on young ignorance.

So rather that spending money on junk, I strongly encourage all nail techs to save their money and take a class with the best educator you can find. Not all educators are good at everything - look for the specialists and spend your money wisely on something that will benefit you for the rest of your career.

Then you will be developing your OWN brand, and perhaps one day you work can be on the cover of Scratch! (just imagine your customers response when they see THAT hanging on your salon wall! Then you hit them with the price increase!! LOL!!).

So don't panic. There is something you can do and it's called acting like a professional ;-)

Hugs from Sweden!

Bob

P.S. If you have any doubt that you are the brand - login to Facebook and see how we teach our new nail techs. Do you think that they will worry about discount salons? https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.248356551919646.61900.100002359080370&type=1

Two of our Educators are competing at the World Championships in Dusseldorf next month. They started their own salon and school in Tallin (Estonia) one year ago. But because of their skills, they now have a waiting list for new customers and are looking to expand.

yes it's very cheeky to be so blatant with copying the packaging. what i meant though was we can't do much about the product being copied.

I saw this just now and was about to write a post about it... Glad everyone else has! I am absolutely raging! I can't believe that they have tried to do such a blatant rip off, it looks like a copy of the old Shellac Salon 'B' rack! Hope they get serious negative feedback once the vouchers are redeemed!
