Hi, I bought my hair salon in December 2007. I spent a fortune on refurbishing it and putting in 2 beauty rooms. I intended to rent the room out to a beautician, (the other one is a shower and sauna). Anyhow to cut a long story short I heard a beautician was looking for some work closer to her home as her previous boss was selling up. I interviewed her and she looks the part etc. She didn't want to rent or be self employed but promised lots of clients, (as she was only 2 miles away this didn't seem unlikely). I took her on full time and she was also getting a split commission which was working out at an extra £40ish a week. Well, she has not been paying her way it has been costing me, the business to keep her and it was ridiculous paying commission when she was not covering her wages. The clients didn't materialise, a few did and picking up some from the hairdressing side. So after 3 months I took her to one side and said it had to stop. Either she had to pull her finger out and try her hardest to get more clients, go self employed or go on a part time basis. I had tears and no to all of the suggestions. I stopped the commission and said she had to be reasonable. I was under no obligation as the contract was on a 3 month trial. After lots of talking and trying to understand that yes, Rome was not built in a day, that she could go on for one more month and try harder. The last 3 weeks she has just covered her wages. I am now being asked to review things ie, when her wages are covered to take out the cost of treatments, I am being told things like a brow wax only costs me 10p full body massage 20p etc the list goes on!!!! so she wants a full contract and any remaining profit to be split 50/50 with her! I am at my wits end as there has been no profit what so ever since she started in March. I had to kit the room out at great expense......I could go on but I dont know what way to turn. I have spent all this money, I am a hairdresser not a beautician, its all new to me. But trying to find another beautician, its like hens teeth!! so help please. I really need to be able to go into work in the next couple of days armed with some good strong points to talk to her. So any advice from all you professional beauticians out there would be greatfuly received.

A brow wax costs you 10p, how does she work that one out,
you have to pay her for the amount of time it takes her,
the cost of the wax,
electricity for heating the wax,
wax strips,
all the prep and after care lotions and potions,
couch roll used on treatment couch,
price of the client card if you want to nit pick, but it all adds up,

A full body massage 20p
cost of her wage for time taken again,
cost of oil or lotion,
heating cost to keep client comfortable,
cost of candles if you use them,
cost of washing the couch covers and towels etc

if you look at the brands of what she is using you can contact the suppliers and most will give you a break down of cost per treatment,
you then need to look at everything else that is been used in that treatment and the cost of each item
then there is the time it takes her to perform each treatment because this costs you in wages hth

i think she sounds like a waste of space! she should be grateful you kelpt her on at all, also keep in mind the longer you have her there te harder she'll be to sack, and the more rights she has.

If she wants to talk about profit, fine, as part of that conversation I think you need to be aware of your overheads....Rent, Rates, Electricity, Phone, Cleaning, Water, Initial Costs, etc, etc, etc.

Tell her that profit is worked out including all these costs and if she wants to be a 'profit centre' then she will have responsibility for her share of all of these things too.

Tbh, I think you should cut your losses NOW!

You will find a replacement, get an ad in the paper and advise the local Job Centre. You need someeone successful for your business, don't you?

Give her a good slapping! lol! :)

sounds like she it real soft, your doing all the real work with no benefit to yourself... look at what lobylou has said its so true, in my opinion i would either cut her out and rent the room out to someone else

Hello there

I am really sorry to hear your dilema.

I am a beautician, I rent rooms above a hairdresses, ive been there 5 months now its going good so far and hav,nt made any profit for myself, but like you said rome was,nt built in a day and I dont expect anything to happen till at least next year..

This beautician that you have employed,. sorry she is talking through here ass, and seem to be taking you for a ride as she knows your a hairdresser and would,nt really know much about beauty. even if you do

like the others have said you need to put into account your overheads which is lighting electricity water, products etc etc.

omg i dont know where she is getting this 10p and 20p from????

for a massage it would normally take an hour, then there is the oils, candles ( if there used ) towles to be washed afterwards, so I dont know how she can say 20p,,

You have to calculate what products are being used for each treatment and break them down, then you need to add the cost of the time it take to do the treatment. eg for a £28 an hour massage it would probably only cost you £20 the other £8 being your profit of say £8 an hour.
so if you break it down.

towls to be washed eg £4

oils to be used eg 8 drops of 3 differents essential oils, plus 30mls of carrier oil £6

Candles , I use three so say £1

then on top of that you have your lighting, (electricity) for the music and you time so thats the extra £9

so you can see how you break things down. but that is only an example that i do others may do it differently.

I would suggest you do a lot of research regarding the beauty industry and be really knowledgeable on the subject then she car,nt take the mick

If it was me, id of got rid ages ago, my motto has always been if staff down pull their weight then there out after 3 warnings id sack her asap as it will be harder to do so the longer you leave it,

Do it tomorrow, you will get a replacement, just keep advertising , go to your local college and see if they have anyone that is about to qualify or if they know of someone who they could recommend that how Ive gone about it,

local paper, radio, shops, job centre add on the window of salon etc

i hope this helps if you need any more advice please feel free to pm me
glad to be of any help
