hi
just had a lady enquire about one of my parties, she asked if i could make it any cheaper as she could do it herself, but couldnt be bothered with the hassle !! she then went on to say if i couldnt reduce the £10 per child, could i throw in a birthday cake or party bags !! needless to say, i politely declined, but now im left wondering if perhaps my parties are too expensive .. could i please have your opinions ?

mini diva makeup & nails party
age 9-12 yrs
mini facial - cleanse, tone & moisturise (using young & pure)
mini makeup - eyeshadows, cheek shimmer & lipgloss (jane iredale)
painted finger nails (opi, cnd etc)
freehand nail art to 2 finger nails
personalised gift (beaded bracelet) for the birthday girl
complimentary party invitations & reply slips
£10 per girl (min 6)

oh and i also throw in a £10 voucher off a 1-1 makeup lesson for mum

i live in a fairly affluent area, im a trained make up artist and have recently taken a nail art course which cost me over £100 - all the products i use are high end, bring along a makeup chair, vanity case and dress in uniform, the girls wear headbands when having facials done - i try and make it as authentic as possible .. i personally thought £10 pp was fair, party would have been for 2 hrs (20 mins per girl) so thats basically £30 an hour which is way cheaper than what a local face painter charges per hour .. would appreciate your comments

If I had kids and all I had to pay for entertainment was £60 for 6 girls I'd be quite happy. My sister has spent a fortune on birthday parties then had to get cake, nibbles and papty bag + contents herself.

Gosh how do you manage that in 20 mins per child?!!
I personally think it's a very reasonable price.

I have to be honest and say I think this lady has a bit of a cheek, £10 a head is average for any sort of party per head!!! They are getting quality products used and a gift at the end if I was you I woulld have said no as well. Keep going and remebewr you are worth what you charge.

I think your price is brilliant,
I charge £8 per child just for a mini mani each and a pack of glitter tattoo pens for them to have a play with and the birthday girl gets a party bag. Mum gets a voucher, so your price is fine.
There will always be those trying it on, she wont find anyone else any cheaper doing all that hun. So dont worry.xx:hug:

i have looked around in my local area - and they charge £10-£15 for similar, sometimes with less treatments so think i'll stick with my prices

20 mins is ample, very occasionally the party goes over by 10-15 mins but thats not a problem

when i have larger parties, i demonstrate the facial on the birthday girl and get the others to do it on each other which is lots of fun and saves a little time

thanks all x

I too think the prices are fine but regardless of this the idea of providing the 'entertainment' and the party is so the parents don't have to bother doing it themselves!! As she said, she could do it herself but couldn't be bothered, well that in itself is partly what she's paying for also - the service!!!
Dont worry there'll be plenty of parents who will gladly pay this if it means they don't have to go through the hassle of organising something themselves! xXx

I think you prices are fine some people are so cheeky and want things for nothing she was trying it on dont even waste another minute thinking about it:lol:

I think for all you are doing then that is a very good price. Maybe you could offer different types of parties to appeal to lots of different people I have a few different ones, some cheaper than others so they can choose a cheaper alternative if need be or add on, I have a few different ones but I make sure I get the hourly rate I want with my prices iykwim. My parties are a lot cheaper than some around at the mo I paid nearly £200 for my daughters cheerleading party this year. hth. Cx

That is an absolutely fabulous price, you did the right thing by declining.

In one salon I worked, was in an affluent area. I went mobile, and went to these peoples homes and could not believe the money these people had (multi million dollar homes!) . Then the cries of poverty came.

We go to the grocery store and pay the price that is presented towards us.

Maybe you could have a couple of choices in terms of adding services/things to a base package, like what Claire said.

Your prices are definately affordable, and you offer alot for what you charge

I have to agree with the above posts. If anything, I would say your prices were a little low considering what you offer! I know around my area for those types of treatments you would be looking to pay £12.50 +

Don't be put off by this one woman - she was obviously after a freebie of some sort!

Think she's just one of those people that tries at stuff like that.

I charge £10 per person and i do their make-up, f&p on nails, i take crimpers, straighteners and curling tongs with glitter hairspray and ive recently bought the pink chocolate fondue for £10 from argos and i just take a few bananas and bag of marshmallows.

I charge £15 per child and do pretty much the same as you do but through in drinks and nibbles. Its fairly popular at the at price and we are more than just a mum throwing a party together, we are trained beauty therapists!

I think your price is very reasonable for all that you offer. :)

think i will stick with that price and may even put it up in the new year!
i specialise in bridal and special occasion makeup and offered mostly "teen" makeup parties using my regular kit mac, bobbi, chanel etc ..
it was only when a friend asked for a party for her daughter who was 9 i decided to offer few more parties, tailored to that particular age group and a princess party for 5-8 yrs and include the nail art - ive only just started to do "freehand" so wasnt sure how much to charge
would really love to offer a stand alone nail art party, but not sure which age group it would appeal to mostly and how much to charge .. i have loved creating new designs and using foil, striping tapes etc but obviously have to alter the designs slightly for shorter nails .. can i ask those who offer nail art alone, how much you charge, how long you spend on each girl and what sort of age group this type of party appeals to most
really appreciate your comments xx

Just wanted to echo what everyone else has said, I think for what you offer that's a fantastic price - underpriced if anything!! Some people are just cheeky but you were right to stand your ground and stick to your prices, you're a trained professional. Aw I bet little girls love all that pampering!

Pretty much ditto what everyone else has said. If anything I would say your prices are defo on the low side for the area you're in. Put those prices up!! lol

You'll probably find that even if you only charged a fiver a head you'd get some moaning minnie trying to get a better deal.

I'm not massively far away from you & the going rate round here is more £13-15 per head for something similar.

Incidently I currently charge £14.50 & each girl gets mini man, mini ped, & make up. Plus, I take along princess dresses for the 5-7yrs to get dressed up in: beads etc for them to make some jewellery; colouring books + some other craft activities to keep the girls amused while they're not being pampered.

The feedback has been that we offer value for money. At the end of the day, I don't think it matters so much what your actual prices are, as long as the client/customer feels like they are getting that value for money.

If people only ever bought on price, why would so many BMWs, Mercs etc be sold? And why would Harrods still be thriving?

I cant believe the cheek of some people! I have paid over £100 for my little girls party and she's only 3!! And that was at the local play gym and all they did was provide a few bowls of crisps and a couple of sandwiches then the kids got to play in the play gym. Your partys are totally worth £10 per child, infact, I think you're right to put your prices up in the new year!

As someone else said, I wouldnt give the cheapskate another minutes thought!!

Reading your post has infuriated me:mad:

£10 for what you offer is very reasonable, she sounds extremely greedy!!
Flipping hell I had one client who asked me how my I charge for mobile spray tanning, I said £20 and she said, £20! no thanks. I then said well that's pretty cheap actually considering I do it mobile

What on earth do these people expect? If they havent got any money, why ring for a tan, a party or whatever!
I get arsey with people questioning my prices, there are cheaper hairdressers than me, and dearer ones too. Do they ring Nicky Clarke and ask for a discount or express horror at his prices?
People can choose whether they shop in primark or selfridges, I would rather not join in with the race to the bottom regarding prices.
I think you are offering a lot for the amount you charge. If this woman doesnt like it, she can always take the kids to Mcdonalds instead!
