Righty ho !
All us mums remember what it was like before we had our first baby, scary !!!!

Now me and lily are compling her hospital bag , but as lily is a first time mum. and i last gave birth almost 8 years ago ....we are getting stuck lol
All the lists the magazines and websites give you, are very good, but a lot of it (as i remember) is completly un-nessesary.

so if you can add something , you can think off that she will need to take, or mention things you took , and then found completly useless and you needent have bothered ,
it would really help xxx

now when i had my first child Nobody told me to take breast pads, At 16 years of age i knew no better , and presumed that because i wasnt breast feeding I wouldnt need them....
I spent 2 days soaking wet, trying to hide the fact I was leaking milk all over the place...too embarrassed to tell anyone

so, can any one help us along here,
Ill give lily a shout now and ask her to let us know what she already has packed, or on her list of things to get ,
then we can help from there ....

Please do help if you can think of anything, not on the list, as it is very scary your first time,
and we dont want her to be in the throws of labour, only to remember she forgot her BIG knickers or something :green:
the less stress for our lily the better

thankyou geeks xxxxxxx:hug:

Ooooh here goes...

Flip Flops... Maternity hospital floors are gross.. you don't wanna be walking in other people's blood

Several nighties... they won't wash them for you!

About 10 pairs of knickers (you never know how long you will stay)

Breast pads!

Magazines...

Bobbles...

Your mobile phone...

Baby wipes... baby grows.. bibs... nipple cream (if you BF but you mightn't always need it in first few days)... nappies... ear buds.. all the usual stuff for babies...

Your camera

Facial scrub...

Sanitary pads... the big ugly old white ones that can double as sheep...

Toothbrush.. and Paste...

Cotton bag to keep your dirty clothes in...

Coins... and money to register the birth if you stay in a few days... or even if you don't you can pay to have the Birth Certificate done in the hospital..

Snacks... hozzie food is gross!!

Change of clothes - NON maternity trousers.. I will never forget leaving in a pair of Maternity jeans that were around my knees almost before I'd reached ground floor...

Bobbles... OOOH good one hun , I have still got a tatty old bobble in my baby box, that a midwife gave to me coz i didnt have one, the things you keep ! lol

Sanitary pads... the big ugly old white ones that can double as sheep...
lol thats what I said ...nice big fat cheap ones, that are dead comfy, and MASSIVE knickers to hold them in :green:

..
:green::green::green:

thankyou hunny xxxxxxx

I took an empty bag and nicked all the ready made bottles...hmm maybe not the best thing to tell you:lol:(good advice though)
We did pay for a private room of my own last time and had 3 days in hospital..for privacy and for me and Rach to bond. It worked well, she hasn't left my side for 6 years. She's lying next to me as I type telling me how much she loves me....and doesn't want to sleep in her own bed:)
The first time though...weird. I just kept looking at Jordan in utter disbelief and thinking OMG...I've had a baby.
Lily...you will be fine hun...maybe a little shocked though.
Yep and unfortunately it's all about big knickers and tbh you really don't care.
I don't really talk about things like breast pads but yes you need all those kind of things, but be prepared to ask for pain relief AFTER the birth..the afterpains can be a bit tough.
And don't run around after everyone else making tea etc. Let them make the tea for you.
Hospital bag. Basic toiletries, plenty of underwear and nighties, lots of bibs and something to put on your shoulder, vests and babygrows etc.Loads of nappies. Sudocrem. Infacol (you'll need this when you get home not in the hospital)
If you don't know the sex of the baby then buy a newborn baby outfit in both pink and blue. It will seem really important if the hospital photographer comes to take a pic.
God... I'm almost broody now:lol::hug:

Ooooh don't forget the hospital give you Bounty Packs full of allsorts... I got 3 when I had the Twins :green:

Mini Sudocrem.. breast pads... wipes... Toothpaste... Washing powder... Eco Friendly washing up liquid... a booklet and I think I even got a Child Benefit form in there too

I found those muslin squares you can get from mothercare really useful for all sorts especially putting over your shoulder or holding under babies chin when winding.I used them all the time and my daughter became attached to them and sucked them as her comforter noo noos we called them.We still use them to cleanse our faces. They can easily be hot washed and dryed.

I did the same thing :o:green:

bigger the better one less thing to worry about isnt it :green:
I'm almost broody now:lol::hug:
omg I was getting very broody then talking to lily, remembering all the excitment mixed with nerves ....luckily .not quite broody enough for me to act on it lol

socks i took 3 pairs feet were freezing in labour

Straws!!!!! So your other half can give you a drink whilst your in labour. You really dont want to let go of the gas and air so let him hold the drink and use a straw.

Magazines or a good book. Cotton wool, baby wipes, face cloth, towels. Nappy sacks.

Cant think of anything else atm lol.

Just thought, an extra soft toilet roll!!! The hospital loo roll is none too soft on your nether regions after giving birth!!!!

Hi all!
Right... just got my book out that I did when I was expecting my little boy and it has my list on it of what I packed::eek:

For Mum:

Maternity Bras (2 or 3)
Large nighties (front opening if BF)
Breast Pads
Dressing Gown & Slippers
Knickers (Bridget Jones stylee lol)
Sanitary PAds
Moisturiser
Make up (helps you feel more human if you're in there for a while)
Socks
Hairbands
Deodourant (& body spray or perfume)
Hairbrush
Shampoo & Conditioner
Flannel & Towel (I hate using hospital ones)
Small Mirror
Tissues
Toothbrush & Toothpaste
Soap
Lipbalm
Baby oil

For Baby:

Babygros
Shawl
Vests
Scratch Mittens
Newborn Nappies
Socks
Wipes
Sudocrem
Going home clothes (all in one, bootees, coat, hat etc)

OMG!!

It sounds like I took all but the kitchen sink!! But when its all packed it doesn't look that much really, its all small stuff.

My baby's 3 now and it seems so long ago that I did all this:eek:

Anyway, I hope this might help ya out - I went through every book possible and was soooooo nervous but it wasn't half as bad as I thought it was going to be, I actually quite enjoyed it - and my labour was 37 & 1/2 hours from start to finish! Lol!

Don't worry hun, you'll be fine, its all a big exiting adventure into the unknown!

I dont think anyone else has mentioned this very important item...
A childs rubber ring:eek::eek:

Ok... all hospitals are different I guess? But at the Royal Berks where I gave birth, they advised us to bring a pillow (yes, really) and our own food. They have a kitchen in the dept where you can just go along and pop a ready meal in the microwave. Don't get me wrong, they do feed you, but you might be starving when it's not a mealtime. Also, not being very familiar with hospital etiquette I didn't fill in the slip they left by my bed to indicate my choice of meal, so they just took the slip, didn't mention it, then didn't bring me any food, said they just assumed I didn't want anything because I hadn't filled the slip in. So I guess being self sufficient and taking everything but the kitchen sink is a good idea.
I couldn't afford a private room but my sister advised me not to worry, because she said it can be lonely and it's nice to have other mums to talk to when you're on a ward. This also helped because it was another mum not a member of staff who explained where you go for breakfast, I would have been lying there waiting for it to arrive, lol, another meal missed(!) if another mum hadn't told me we have to go and get it ourselves.
Anyway, it's all good! These petty annoyances pale into insignificance when your pride and joy is lying in your arms. And hopefully Lily will be in and out in less than 24 hours:hug:

only reason i mentioned it was because my mate forgot it - so hubby had to make a mad dash to mothercare to buy one before they could take baby home! xx

Make sure you have practiced putting the car seat in the car properly before you leave the hospital as the day you leave the safe secure hospital is a scary day!! The first thing you have to do is strap the seat in and boy are they fiddley!!

Second bit of advice is total vanity but take some self tanning moisturiser....made me feel better instantly!!

(eeek how shallow am I!!)

Take some munchies to nibble on while in labour, I got peckish, so had some sarnies and choccie!! lol
Toliet paper cos hospital paper is not nice!
Camera to take pics of baby when 'it' is born, you will not remember to take the pics but perhaps partner will!!
Going home outfit? Both mine had the same going home outfit, wasnt expensive, just from Mothercare, it was unisex in cream white and a bit of yellow! Very cute though!!

Gift for the midwife? We gave my midwife a luxury box of chocs, she was fab!!

The hospital will provide you with painkillers after the birth.

I took Tena Lady pads in with me both times, found them much better than pads!

As Jaq said a rubber ring or a very comfy cushion, just to soften sitting down!

You'll be fine Lily, just go with the flow. xxxx
