My daughter (age 12) has just had a fish pedicure, so angry!

sorry, i dont think im not putting myself across well jacquelenna lol .. wasnt implying YOU were questioning my parenting skills, lol just commenting in general as a poster appeared concerned that i had let my 12 yr old daughter out by herself
i appreciate your comments though .. all of you

If that was me, then yes, I was concerned.

This is just my OPINION (I am neither right or wrong): I wouldn't let my 12 year old daughter out, alone. or with a friend or two but that's just me. Also, there area I live in, I wouldn't (and HADN'T) let my 15 year old BOYS out alone. Again, this is just me.

In no way was I questioning anyone's parenting skills.

Also, I think the salon was TOTALLY wrong in giving the treatments. Shame on them. When it comes to the almighty dollar (or pound, or euro), some folks scruples just go out the window.

no 'teddy bear found' headlines in your local paper then ;) is that why you took up kickboxing ?
if i could i would keep my daughter in until she's 15, id like to wrap her in cotton wool - but as it is she's one of the last in her class allowed 'into town' with her friends friday after school -they all meet for milkshake and sit on the common chatting (all very innocent) and shopping with her friends on a saturday.

perhaps things are different here in the uk ?

Yes, in part, that is why I took kickboxing, while having my boys in karate.

I'm sitting here watching a Dateline where a young girl was kidnapped on her way to school. It's sickening that there are weirdos in this world who hurt kids.

You are lucky your live in the area you do.

i know we're v.lucky, i have family in new jersey and in florida too so i know things can get a little naughty in some neighbourhoods .. my uncle insists on escorting us everywhere when we visit him in kissimmee as we apparently stick out like a sore thumb and are targets for those that pray on tourists, but just what a 72 yr old with a gammy leg is going to do to protect us if we ever come across a spot of trouble i dont know, lol
love america though :)

I think most of us see there are two different issues on this one, it's not the fact the girl did it it without asking Mum, it is the fact she was allowed to have it done by the salon without parental consent at 12 years old not that her mum didn't give her the permission.

I agree 100% with Blush09 being p8ssed off.[/QUOTE

Yes it's very clear there are 2 issues but im not going to comment on the other one as I know nothing about the rules regarding 12 year olds having fish pedicures, my comment was in no way undermining Blush09s reasons for being pissed off but infect was supposed to be reassurance as alot of 12 year olds where I'm from are out smoking, drinking, fighting etc. All I can say is I hope this sort of thing is the worst I get from my daughter at 12 she us 5 at the mo so I'm sure I'll have reason to feel like blush09 at some point, I wouldn't embarrass myself by putting malicious or argumentative posts :)

That is ADORABLE! :)

1. I think you must have a good relationship with your daughter as she came back from town and told you what she had been up to...

2. I think the insurance and what's legal or not legal side of things should be looked into a bit more, as it's a massive statement to make that someone is breaking the law?!

3. The damage is done, she won't do it again....therefore don't stress about it...enjoy the fact your daughter was honest and she could be doing alot worse ; )) x

I don't think she embarassed herself at all, I would have been pissed off to be honest. She is 12 years old and in all fairness unable to be held responsible for her actions in the eyes of the law.....Hence in a court, she would be tried as a minor. Therefore, she should have to have parental consent before having ANY sort of treatment in ANY sort of salon.

No, she didn't phone and ask mum....But what 12 year old when confronted by a sales woman saying it would be cool to tell all her friends, is actually going to say....hold on, i'll phone my mother???

The salon owner should have known better....and should have insisted on parental consent....and certainly should not have approached them on the street.

thank you for your comments freyabeauty
yes i do have a good relationship with my daughter (well most days, lol)
i dont think i actually said they were breaking the law, just questioned their morals and perhaps implied they may not have insurance, well regardless - if they do have insurance it was rendered invalid the moment they let my daughter have a fish pedi
not able to complain as my lo is unwell, and cant get their number off directory enquiries or the internet as they're new to the area, but my friend who's daughter was in the group is planning to contact the local council - dont think id go that far, but just want to let it be known im not happy that she was given the treatment without my permission and point out the consent and point out theimplications with their insurance company

"breaking the law" comment wasn't directed at you but in general where people believe they know the facts and are mislead...not just on this thread but on other threads.

My main question would be do they even have insurance? And if so what is their insurance company policy on age limit?

I would go into the salon and find out some more info, they don't know your her mum, you could be a potential client. Put your mind at ease. X

Unfortunately Steffi, it is the second issue which is making her concerned. Not the actions of her 12 years old.

It is blo*dy scandalous that a salon performed a treatment on a 12 year old child without consent and blush09 was airing about this. It is neither argumentative or malicious and I think it is a bit unfair to say this.

I think 12 is a perfectly fine age to be allowed a bit of freedom. They need to be given some independance...and 12 is a good age in my opinion.

I do feel that it was not your daugters fault. They would have all seen people dangling their feet in a tank of fish, thought it looked fun and had a bit of a giggle. I very much doubt I would have thought that I would be in a lot of trouble by putting my feet in a tank of fish to clean up my feet when with my friends.

Actually - I lie - I would have been in so much trouble for wasting my money! lol.

I think she got caught up in the fasination and fun with her friends...thought it innocent enough, and experienced something a little out of the norm. Bless her. I bet she was shocked by your reaction.

I do not know much about these fish spas...but I walked past one the other day, and a 9 year old boy was trying it with his mum, and a 14 ish year old girl...all smiling and laughing. I couldn't see much wrong woth it and their feet and ancles were still intact when they finished. I may be far less informed on the matter though.x

I never said she should be embarrassed if you read my comment properly you would see that I was justifying MYSELF to another user.

BTW I lived near Blandford for a while, any decent salons there yet?

OK CLEARLY NO1 IS UNDERSTANDING WHAT I MENT!!!! When I said i wouldn't embarrass myself I ment MYSELF, I was simply justifying myself to another member who had quoted what I said and took it the wrong way the same as you lot are doing now so maybe read it properly. And no there aren't any decent salons in blandford which is why I'm mobile :)

Actually jaqueline I've just realised it was you I was justifying myself to in the first place, clearly wires are getting crossed here and what I have said has been taken out of context on both occasions, I guess this is what happens when talking is done through text/typing etc... Anyway Blush09 since this is actually your post the only person who really needs to understand what I ment is you, which is this....So in detail I have a 5 year old myself and hope that when she is 12 she is as honest as yours and that this sort of thing is all I have to worry about(meaning your daughter is well raised clearly) and yes it is wrong that your permission was not needed, IF legally that is the case which I decided not to mention before (because as I said I have no clue about the rules and regs) and don't usually run my mouth about things I know nothing about as it causes arguments and embarrassment, also just to clarify that another user pointed out I did say I wouldn't embarrass myself by putting malicious comments on which was supposed to clear up my previous comment taken the wrong way, i dont know how its come accross but i am not a snide person and if i havent got anything nice to say i dont usually bother. I do however hope that you get all of this resolved and that your daughter continues to be honest with you as it's rare these days :)

ha ha I get you! Ones persons thread can cause a lot of animosity sometimes on here. It is hard to txt type on here without getting misunderstood sometimes. But with regards to the poster I think you are right to give your 12 year old a bit of freedom. I do to and wud also be p8ssed off that they had been taken advantage off and put there feet in a gross fish spa. And me being me wud get down there and give them what for!

Parenting aside (because it's really no one's business but her own UNLESS a child is endangered and that's a whole other kettle of fish) and back to the topic at hand.....

This brings me back to some of the issues debated on my thread about the Lolita Effect, and whether or not Salon's had a certain responsibility to decline services to children.

While I'm 100% in agreement with the OP that the salon should NEVER have given the service without parental consent...

I find that the general consensus here is interesting as it seems that it would depend upon WHICH SERVICE, what should require parental consent and what shouldn't; whether or not the Salon should be responsible.

It seems folks can't make up their minds whether Salons have a responsibility or not.

THAT I find very curious.

Interesting food for thought, isn't it?

IMHO, if the law is no one under 16 can have treatments w/o parental consent, then I feel NO treatments should be performed. Yes, the salon IS responsible for providng a service they shouldn't have.

Unfortunately, where the almight dollar is concerned, some folks just don't care. Sad, really...

Lol yes it's very frustrating especially when you come off looking worse than you should, never mind I know what I ment. I always say my opinion but would never disrespect anyone else's just wanted to make it clear my post wasn't ment to be rude :)

That sums it up VERY accurately!
