Hi all - am just setting out as a "mature" student in the beauty industry and training at local college.

Could do with some help/advice from the wonderful contributors to this site please.

The nail products supplied with our kits at college from the nail files through to the polishes are absolutely awful.

At home I've usually used a glass nail file, and OPi nail polishes. I'm happy to spend a bit of money to buy good quality files, polishes etc to replace my college supplies.

I know we all have our personal preferences but I'd really appreciate some advice on what are the best tools & polishes etc. to buy. Can you offer some thoughts?

Also I read in the threads about using nail fresh and an art brush; where can I buy these?

Look forward to hearing from you all/ Cheers, jtp x

The nail products supplied with our kits at college from the nail files through to the polishes are absolutely awful. This is the case with 99% of college kits im afraid.

At home I've usually used a glass nail file, Glass files are ok for the natural nail but no use for enhancements. and OPi nail polishes. I'm happy to spend a bit of money to buy good quality files, polishes etc to replace my college supplies.

Also I read in the threads about using nail fresh and an art brush; where can I buy these? Nailfresh is a creative product sold by sweet squared 0845 210 6060, they also sell brushes, ask for a brochure to be sent to you.

Look forward to hearing from you all/ Cheers, jtp x
Most college kits are rubbish, are you doing natural nails or acrylic/gel/fiberglass nails at college,
once you have passed your course you can go to creative, ezflow, nsi, opi etc and do a conversion course with one of them and then you would be allowed to buy their enhancement products,
just look at college as a learning stepping stone that you will be able to widen upon once completed hth

im going to do an acrylic course at bolton college in november, the kit is £99 and they said they use young nails which i have read some good things about on here, not sure whats in it though! i have been wondering myself if i will probably need to top the kit up with better things! I am going to look into doing one of the conversions after like loubylou has suggested, wnated to do some creative training but cant fit the 5 days around my teaching job!
good luck with the course jtp hope you are enjoying it x

Thanks for this, and what a quick reply:).

Only doing natural nails this term, and I am absolutely only seeing this as a beginning of the learning and intend to go off and do further training myself.

Thanks for the pointers, I'll get sweet squared to send me a brochure.

All I can say is, don't rely on college resources, but the kits aren't too bad... My fibreglass one was alright, didn't need to refill it much! (I went to bolton college)

I know that the kit I got for college for my natural nail care course wasn't very comprehensive at all, the polishes were the worst thing about it.

I wouldn't advise you to buy anything additional just yet though. I made this mistake and spent a lot of money at sally's etc., and now I have decided to use sparitual range I am replacing a lot of the products I got in the kit and that I bought extra. I would use the kit for th epurpose of your course and then decide which ranges you prefer and invest your money then. I'm not saying that your clients in college won't be worth the extra spend but I think it can be expensive enough and there are so many excellent ranges out there it's worth taking a little bit of time over.

Good luck x
