Hello Girls, been a while since I posted but I have been here on and off. Recently there has been alot of talk about NSS and how do you compete against these salons and the unhygenic practice that they carry out. We've all talked about the industry being regulated but this is something that will take time and wont happen overnight and it is us and us alone that can only change what is happening within our industry. So how do we compete.......Lets change the look of the nails we are producing. I think it is time to start separating ourselves from the NSS by bringing the custom blend nails to the forefront of our industry. Lets bring the nails back to a more natural looking nail and as if they grew there. The custom blended nail will speak for itself when put against an NSS nail.

I agree with you totally David - I (as many others) prefer the more natural looking nails and love the way custom blending can lengthen the nail!

However, if the client wants an in your face set of nails - the wackier the better. My last young client wanted barbie pink zebra stripes on a deep pink base - not my cup of tea but she loved them and it certainly got her a lot of attention :green:

You will always have these clients who want something totally whacky......and there is nothing wrong with that, it is a case of personal preference but you could sell the treatment as a natural looking nail and then do your nail art as an added extra. The client then has the option of removing the nail art and still being left with a set of natural looking nail enhancements to be proud to wear.

Yes yes I agree!! This is totally what I am going for, I am still perfecting my skills but I am going to offer natural looking nails when I unleash myself on the public! I am not yet trained to do custom blend but can't wait to learn! Obviously I enjoy doing the wacky stuff too but for the mainstream of people who have pink and white its so nice to be able to give them something that looks real.

I totally agree with you that this is something that will set us apart from the NSS.

Custome blend is just one aspect that can set you aside from the NSS. General hygiene practices I think are the most important and then the style of the nail to flatter/enhance the clients hands. I don't think that I necessarily compete with NSS as I think they cater for a totally different market who look for the fake effect.

Good to see you back online David!

I would like to see more custom blend photos if nothing else really..

I am in the middle of tampering with exactly that and look forward to training on it (as I am a nail biter! naughty I know, but when I have nails on, I dont put them in my mouth! Its strange.)

The NSS salons didnt do custom blend on my sister as she says she can see her 'real' nail underneath and looks silly. (still angry at her for going there!) :irked:

as an educator i am trained as a full service tech so i offer all types of nails from custom blended to design scupts to p&w etc... but with nss at the end of the day we can only try our best to stand outagainst them (iykwim) .... ppl dont realise the difference... they see a nail salon... unless they come to me for a treatment....

ppl go to nss why?.... prob down to money and lack of education...
we can do our best to educate ppl but i know that not e very one wants to listen... all the see is the saving ££ and dont care abt the rest.... we all know the horrors we have seen and read about and the dangers of nss not only in their techniques but in there hygiene practices etc....
some ppl learn and many others dont.... i just know that if i carry on as i am i wll get clientelle im a good tech (ive worked bloody hard to get there too) and i know my nails beat nss hands down (no pun intended! lol) but i do come at a price and i am prob abt 30 quid or so more than a nss... but hey ive had it said sooo many times to me you get what you pay for ;)

the nss debate could go on and on, being posted about i guess its our jobs to educate ppl and show we are trained, professional, and have safe hygienic working practices... i dotn care abt the local nss in my area.... they arent my competition... i aim higher and i know that with my client education i am trying to help my local industry......

i guess for the future it needs to be shown in the media... but nt just going into the gor and horrors but showing the good sides to our industry too

No wonder so many these days see what we do as tacky, and then brands us the same way, when you see all the hideous porn star nails around.

Has anyone ever seen a natural nail grow in an aggressive square shape with unnaturally long white tips?

Ever since someone (WHO SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS) decreed that the competition nail had to look long and square and 40% curved and an unnaturally deep smile etc etc, it seems nail techs think they have to copy this look in the salon! How long have I been saying, no no no!

You can be more successful with the natural look, because that is what the majority of women want ... save your posh spice nails and hooker nails for the types who want them.

Good point David. Un besó muy grande!!

i see what your saying gigi... i have very few clients whos nails can take a real competition style nail.... if i did i wouldnt have sooo much troubling in finding a comp model!....lol

lots of clients like the fact that i make their nails look natural be it custom blended of if they go for the oval with enamel

the look of the nail shape is down to the client at the end of the day... we can advise and try to educate them in to what we think is suitable but clients sometimes want what they want...

i had a lady ring me at the salon yesterday in fact... asking if i did gel... which i do
she was like do you do the french look i said yes.... but she wanted the french airbrushed... not done with gel.... as it happened i couldnt fit her in for a few weeks and she'd be going back home .... as i put the phone down....i knew she didnt care where she went she just wanted the same look she had already... im guessing she went to a nss and they airbrushed her french then put gel on top......

I have had a custom blend on for the past week (my first) and I have had so many people say how much more natural they look, and lots of compliments so definitely the way to go for me xx

at last..!!! someone saying something positive as a result from something negative....

yes... i think its time we should all stop complaining about the bad nss but instead spend more time in learning, practising and advancing ourselves.....

It is also easier to retail with a custom blended nail. The client has the option of painting their nails.......I know they can do this with forever french but how many of you tell this to your clients. I feel that it is a good selling point, basecoat, polish, top coat and oil. An added £40 onto your service......cant be bad.

So very true ...

I have a friend who always went to a NSS & I explained what to look for in a HSS & that a treatment should not hurt & you should not bleed!!

Well she didn't listen & continued to go to this salon until she eventually moved away ... anyway cutting a long storey short, it wasnt until I borrowed her for my L&P induction & the educator was talking about NSS's that she listened & said "oh my god, I cant beleive I went there" :smack:

I dont know whether she did not listen to me because I am young & she needed to be told from someone a lot more educated than myself!!

Anyway some people who do not want to listen, will not be taught ... unfortunately!!
