Hi everyone,

Desperately need some help with my skin. I am 32 and since a teenager I have battled acne, not severe acne but the tiny annoying spots that form under the skin, they are always on the sides of my cheeks and along my jaw line. They seem to get alot worse just after I have my period.

I have been to docs and have had antibiotics and also different benzoyl peroxide creams and lotions but they dont seem to really work. I have also tried products with saliyclic acid in them but they just seem to create more spots under the skin.

My skin is not particulary oily. I have tried so many different brands of skin care from expensive to cheap but I just cant seem to find any products that I like and that actually feel nice on my skin and do work.

Just wondered if anyone can help and recommend me some products, also forgot to say that my skin is quite sensitive.

thanks Jo

try dermalogica they have a new system called clean start its excellent well suited for congested skin. I will message you

well i totally understand you it happened to me n all, my best advice and after spending lots of money and time......... I went to a chinesse acupunture in meadowhall spend nearly £200 on a course of 12 (only did 10 though) went every monday (bit of a bind) thought i wa totally getting ripped off when i handed over my money. By session 5 i noticed a big difference. And I tell you what its the best money I have ever spent and its been 5 years since I last went and the odd 1 or 2 spots at the time of the month. Go for it girl find a good one and you will never look back:)

Have you tried Decleor ?

From personal experience I have found Decleor to be fantastic on spot prone skin and even better if its a sensitive skin type.

I personally wouldn't reccommend the clean start products. I attended the training last week and I wouldn't say the products were suitable for your skin type and they also contain salicylic acid (doesn't suit my skin either)

My skin is under control now and I use Dermalogica but when it was at its worst a few years ago Decleor was an absolute dream for my skin.

If you could tell us a bit more about your skincare routine and some of the ranges you have already tried with the results we can help you some more.

Hi, I have tried so many brands.

I have tried Decleor and have also had their facials, clarins, estee lauder, nivea, liz earle, chanel, dermalogica, guinot, lancome plus many more.

At the moment I have given up doing anything with my face, it really gets me down and makes me feel so upset, I hate going out as I think people are looking at me face and how horrible it looks.

I had a dermalogica facial a few weeks ago and she said my skin is not really oily more dehydrated with blocked pores but no matter what I do they still remain there.

I really just want to find a skin care line that i can use on my face which will not aggravate my problems any further and maybe get rid of some of the clogging. Any suggestions?

You say you have tried quite a few product ranges - did you use the whole range & for how long? Only asking as it requires some months of regular usage of a range as it was intended before results will be seen. I use Decleor professionally & personally, and to echo Bombini, I likewise have found it especially successful for sensitive skins with break outs, when the right products are prescribed, bought & used regularly.

Hi, I must admit I am not very good at sticking to products for long as as soon as my face feels uncomfortable ie: tight, itchy or more spots coming up under the skin I usually stop using them as think that they are not suitable for my skin or have ingredients in them that are blocking my pores which then creates the spots under the skin.

I used to use the whole range of products but lately have been trying out just the cleanser or moisturiser to try and find if the product is right without spending a fortune on the whole range.

Why is it that i never get proper big spots (unless I pick at the blocked pores), they are always under the skin, I do exfoliate. I did go on the Dianette pill a few years back and that did seem to help, not clear them up completely, have tried to go back on it again but my body doesnt agree with it and it makes me feel awlful.

Hiya, I completely understand your pain, I'm exactly the same, unfortunately mine are hormonal, have had spots for as long as I can remember, I've tried product after product, all claiming to be great Dermalogica, Clinique, etc etc, the overall feel of your skin maybe improved but they cannot help combat the route of your problems if its an internal thing, after lots of blood tests and investigations I was diagnosed with acne and am taking the pill to keep my spots at bay even that does not always help especially at certain times of the month, stressful situations and diet etc. In beauty I was told that spots on your chin is a hormonal and digestive system problem, not sure how true this is. My teacher told me I had oily combination skin due to the fact that I have a congested chin, she was so wrong I have dry skin and the products she recommended made it drier, my chin is not oily (spots does not always mean grease).
I noticed a thread on here about a chinese medicine place, may have to give that a go what have we got to lose. Sorry I could not be of help, but want you to know that you are not alone in this plight against acne, if you find a treatment please let me know xx

Hi, thanks so much for your comments.

I too have suffered with these spots since I was about 13 and I am now 32, I have had small bouts where my skin has been ok but most of the time it has these spots under the skin.

Most people cant see them from a distance its when they are up close or the light catches my skin and then you can see them, I hate having to wash my face in the morning as I can feel them all under the skin, they are worse on my right cheek. Problem is lots of products that are for spotty skin are also for oily skin but I dont think I have oily skin so am completely lost for what products to use.

I dont want to go back on the pill, I did try that a while ago but my body just reacts to the pill and it makes me feel horrible. I dont want to go to the doctors as I know that he will just look at me and think... what spots!!!! I know they are there as I can feel them, I just feel that as I dont have these big cyst type acne that my doctor will think Im crazy.

It is hormonal, darling. There is not much you can do topicly. By using the right range you can help it a bit, but you won't get rid of it completely. I would go for something calming and light. Try Environ, I had a client with a problem just like you have, and I have to say it helped her a good bit. Acupunture, as mentioned earlier, can help too. They usually give you some herds too, i would give it a try.
I have the same problem, I do get spots on my jaw line, and on my back too. I use Environ on my face and it doesn't look too bad, but it is a different story with my back. It is quite bad at the moment. So I won't loose my time seeing my doctor and will go for acupunture, hope it will help my back.
Which ever you decide to go with, good luck:hug:

what suits one skin won't suit another. You really should be looking more for a cosmeceutical product. Avoid plant based products - can really exacerbate your type of skin. Medical microdermabrasion in combination with a medical formula cleanser can really help. Along with peels. But, as you know, will take time. OTC preparations really will not be adequate to actively treat your skin. Go to a specialist skin clinic. You need to be treating at dermal level - which you simply will not get in non medical formulas.

About 8 months ago I also had congested cheeks and chin. At 32, this was no teenage acne. Like you, no real spots to pick at, just lots of lumps under the skin, some that would be alot bigger and redder than the others but never amount to an actual spot. Digging and picking at them was impossible to resist and wearing no make up was not an option as I felt I looked terrible and it just made me more miserable. After lots of different expensive creams I ended up with a number of cheap options and something has definitely worked! I went on the pill - yes I feel pretty bad for the first couple or 3 days of taking it every month but I'd rather have that than the spots back. I switched to mineral foundation and concealer (only Maybelline liquid as powder foundation felt too dry - v cheap!) and use Boots tea tree and witch-hazel face wash and moisturiser and night-cream (again, v cheap!). I can't say my skin feels wonderfully moisturised and I dream of one day using a big gloopy moisturiser but it certainly isn't dry and I daren't swap as my skin is completely spot free! I have a few scars on my cheeks but the makeup covers them wonderfully and they are fading with time. Not sure what worked, but thought I'd share as I know how miserable it can make you feel. x

I can totally sympathise as the others have said its very hormonal and stress related that at my age of 42 Ive never had a day where my skin has been spotless.
However I have found a quick fix that has worked for me over every remedy, drug, treatment etc and thats neat tea tree oil dabbed on the spot.
Cheap and works for me overnight. I also put it into a bowl of steaming water when Im due for my period and that helps by inhaling it into my system, so its working internally as well.
Good luck, its trial and error for each individual.

Somebody had recommended tea tree oil to me too, thats how I ended up with the Boots products.

I know exactly how you feel as I am 30 and have suffered from bad skin all my life. Like a lot of people are saying, if it's hormonal, anything you put on your skin will only affect the existing spots, not prevent more. My chin was exactly the same with mostly under the skin spots some of which were large and very painfull, with one or two that come up as 'proper' spots and they never totally went away. I went on Roaccutane about 4 years ago after trying topical treatments, all the oral medications, creams, lotions, potions, accupuncture etc etc and it was fantastic. Yes, it is not very nice whilst you are on it but you are monitored closely and the results can be amazing. My skin was the best it had ever been after my treatment and although I have a few under the skin spots and my chin is a little red at times, it is nowhere near as bad as it was. If I get too concerned about them now, my doctor puts me on a short course of a lesser strength antibiotic and this now clears them, whereas it wouldn't have touched them before. Please do not be embarrassed about returning to your doctor and forcing them to do something or refer you, it really is NO joke having adult acne. Good luck x

Hi
have you thought of what may be triggering the problem rather than just combatting the symptoms.
talking from experience I had an allergy/intolerance test a while ago and the things i should avoid (but usually crave) are often what flare up my skin, apparently cos my body's trying to get rid of the toxins- could be rubbish but my diet does seem to make a difference- that and stress!!!!

Just reread the link above about Roaccutane!

i was given that at aroung age 30- it seems to dry skin from the inside out. i didn't have very oily skin and I saw lines appearing during the 6 months i used it- doctors were not interested in my "vanity" just that the spots were gone, which they were but 10 yrs on i'm really seeing the damage in spite of taking care of my skin! just a warning!!

Hi have you tried Nimue products they do a great range that is for problematic skin. It is designed to reduce the build up of excess oil and dead skin cells, normalizing the function of cell renewal, helping reduce inflammation and prevents bacteria formation deep within the hair follicle and pores. Had many happy clients on this skin range and there skin has improved dramatically.
