I have just taken a job in a department store and am having to work christmas eve and boxing day. I am regretting it already!! The store is opening till 10pm on the run up till christmas and managers were issued a list of tips on how we can keep ourselves and our staff safe when we leave work at this time and have to make our way through manchester city centre. So they know there is a risk, but hey ho as long as they are making money what do they care.

Isn't that why we all work the hours we do ? To make money? Isn't that why we all work period? I can't imagine anyone working in a department store could expect NOT to work Xmas eve and Boxing Day ... It's the name of the game this time of year .... The only difference is that when you are your own boss you have a choice.

Unfortunately when you commit to work for someone else you loose the freedom of having that choice. in your case it is your choice to put yourself under their rules where the hours are set by the department store. It doesn't make them greedy uncaring materialistic swines ... They are running a business to make money and service the consumer, just like we do.

I popped a thread on here a few weeks ago asking what everyone's last day was as I was torn between loosing clients and having family time. (Which is wrong)

So far all my regulars have booked in and my last client is in on the 21st (I don't get many weekend bookings). So I've decided I will do the 22nd maybe 23rd if the 22nd gets full but not mobile as parking will be a nightmare clients will have come to me.

I'm keeping an open mind about before new year but I'm having at least Christmas Eve till 27th off.
It will be the first time in decades I will have this much time off and won't be stressed and dreading going back to work.

I worked in the same store 8 years ago and the previous store manager refused to open the store on boxing day he believed we all worked hard enough. To give staff a list of guidelines because by making by
them money they are risking staffs safety I think that does make them materialistic uncaring swines. Shops opening till daft o clock and extra hours on sundays and christmas do we not do anything other than work and shop. Total disregard for families. Consumerism rules hence our modern day mess.

That is what commercialism is all about. You bought into it by signing the contract. No need to be a baby about it. It is what it is .. you had the choice. Dont cry about it after the fact.

Absolutly hit the nail on the head there, Geeg! I worked in a major retail chain for nearly 18 years. Loved it to start off with, but the last few years were hell for lots of reasons. I was just a number, there to make them money, especially at Christmas. Not good business sense to give staff time off at the busiest time of the year. That was the nature of the job, like it or lump it!
I didn't like it, so I left!
I now have a fabulous job working with special needs children by day & nails in an evening! Which fits in perfectly with my family life now my son is older. I love my job/life now but it was up to me to make it happen. Took some courage to begin with but I've never looked back. :D

I was planning on working half day on Xmas eve but you know after reading this thread I don't think I'll bother and I'll spend it with my children and fiance. I am working on the Sunday before christmas but I'm also planning to have the christmas week off.

I'm working until and including Sat 22nd, then closing my book for Christmas! Opening Fri 28th and until 4pm Mon 31st for New Years' trade, but the rest of that time is family time. :)

Top tip also (for those it applies to): I am saying NO to mobile appointments and NO to feet in that final week running up to Christmas: I will have enough people to cram into my days without losing time on the road, setting up and packing away my kit... and feet? They will last perfectly well for the festive period if done two weeks before Christmas, which frees up space for more hands in that all-important last week.

Have a great Christmas break, everyone! :)

What a great piece of advice. I have worked in industry for about 8 years now. I think I've only had one Xmas eve off in that time and it was brilliant ! It actually felt like Christmas.

Last year was probably the worst christmas week I've ever had I was so ill. As many of you geeks know Xmas week is many hours not only at work but at home too. I spent last christmas in bed!!

So when this year came and I saw Xmas eve would land on the salons day off (Monday) I was ecstatic!!!

But as its not my salon it was a bit touch and go to whether we would have it off or not. But my luck was in. Haha.

Some clients can't believe we're not open though!! But like it has been said in thread clients seem to get in a panic and think the nails that normally last them three weeks are only going to last three days.

So we are actually opening the day after Boxing Day which I do find frustrating.

Sounds far too familiar!! xx

For the first time in the 13 years the salon has been in existence, we will be closed on "Boxing Day."

Boxing Day isn't a traditional American holiday but apparently it is in Canada where our owner was raised. He is opting to celebrate it this year.

Service providers will now be off from close of business December 23rd through Boxing Day, December 26th.

We Canadians LOVE boxing day! Not me in particular though, too many people! I just want to punch everyone in the face :p I close every boxing day and sit in my house laughing at how people think their getting deals one that one day when really it's boxing week now. HA!

I thought the meaning behind 'Boxing Day' was to punch the daylights out of people during those crazy mad sales rushes so you get your bargain item.

No?

Hmm I see what your saying, so I SHOULD go out and punch people as its the spirit of the day....

On second thought I prefer to stay out of jail, my bed is much more comfortable then a bench in a cell lolol

I too have decided to close Xmas Eve with a few clients stamping their feet already. I've decided to open on the Sunday 23rd to fulfill their needs on nails needing to be done as close to Xmas as possible for some reason and my needs to spend time and get into the Xmas spirit with my family.
Before we know it our kids will be up and away and I know I'll regret not taking the time to enjoy it with them, life is short ladies enjoy and be merry Lx
