Should a pregnant beauty therapist (10 weeks) be using any essential oils at all for doing massage on clients??

What about oil blends for facials??? this is the Chi detox, restore and replenish oils if anybody knows what I'm talking about???!!!! I presume they don't have pure essential oils in and are quite diluted???!!!!!

Advise please???

Why risk it? I think I'd rather be cautious and cut out all essential oils for at least the first three months. After that you could use oils which are safe in pregnancy.

yes I know and I havn't done since I found out! It is just very hard coming up with reasons as to why I have stopped using essential oils in my massages and facials to all my clients who are used to coming to me all the time!!!

I have a client tonight and this will be the 3rd time I will have to say I havn't had the results back for my allergy tests yet!!! I don't want to tell people this early on before I have even told family and friends!

Very tricky!

I would avoid using them in great amounts so if they feature heavily in your treatments, don't use them.

Sounds like a good excuse to me. I shouldn't worry too much about what people think, the real reason will soon become obvious!

Anyway, congratulations. I hope all goes well for you.

The national association of holistic aromatheraphy reccommend not using any essential oils during the first 3 months especially as although no harm has been proven there's also nothing saying they're definately safe either. If people do want to still use oils or cannot avoid them then the best ones to use are chamomile oils, geranium, jasmine, lavender, neroli, patchouli, sandalwood, ylang ylang as these are all well diluted oils and so there is less potential for adverse reaction. For more information the page where this and much more pregnancy and aromatherapy questions are is here http://www.naha.org/faq_pregnancy.htm

HTH and congratulations

We were taught when I trained that essential oils shouldnt be used on, or by a pregnant woman.
Better to be safe than sorry x

Why don't you contact the suppliers and ask them?

Congratulations

Hiya - as soon I found out I was expecting I stopped preforming aromatherapy based treatments just didn't want to risk it.

This is a tricky topic b/c as mentioned there is no proof or data to suggest the necessity of avoiding essential oils during pregnancy.
Where the idea comes from is back in the olden days when an Apothecary would to prescribe high doses of herbs for medicinal purposes. That is: 75g of fresh herbs (or 30g dried) added to 500ml water to make a very strong herbal tea (this quantity is referred to as therapeutic doses).

Peppermint & raspberry were said to bring on menstration if a period was over due. It is still recommended that 'therapeutic doses' of peppermint & raspberry, and some other herbs/essential oils, be avoided during pregnancy due to their olden day uses:
However, quantities less than therapeutic doses are deemed safe, i.e. ".. a safe ratio is 1-2% (that is: 7-8 drops per 20ml of product).."

I would still avoid peppermint (& a few other strong smelling essential oils), during the first 3 months of pregnancy just to be on the safe side.
If you want to PM me a list of oils you use I can advise you which ones are more ok than others.

I hope that helps, and congratulations on your pregnancy, hope every thing goes very well for you and bubs :green:

I wouldn't use Chamomile or Jasmine as these are used to regulate menstruation so i would air on the side of caution.

If in doubt leave alone.

I wouldn't use any pre blended oils either as these can be of an inferior quality and may be contaminated.

As its already been said there is no evidence that they harm the baby, but oils are carried through the placenta at what cost to baby is yet undecided.

Thanks for all your advise, I know it is best just to avoid them and be on the safe side which is what I have been doing but just a bit of a tricky one when my clients are used to having essential oils in their treatments and I suddenly stop using them!!!

Like said though, it will be obvious to them soon!!! and once ive had that first scan I will be happy to tell all anyway!

Thanks again,

Emma xxx
