Hi there!
I'm new to this posting lark but have been reading all your advice for a while now and find it very interseting and think this site is fab! :green:

I'm 32 & currently at college doing my lvl 2 Beauty Therapy for a complete career change & am absolutely loving it but i'm thinking about going into spray tanning to earn a few more pennies while i train so have a couple of questions for you all.

* Would it be a good time of year to start up?
* Is it quick to make your outlay back?
* Would you charge friends & family?
* If you buy a start up kit from one company can you train with another?

I'm thinking of going with LA Tanning as their starter kit contains quite a lot for the price and the training is free in Jan (if you buy their kit). As you can imagine; money is quite tight after xmas so i just wondered if it would be worth doing now or leaving it for a few months.
Thanks in advance!

I am not familiar with LA Tanning so I cant comment on the start up cost....However what I will say is sometimes its better to pick what you want in your kit so you get exactly what you want, and you can build it up more as you start to gain clients and recoup monies spent....

I would say what you need is a HVLP, a tent and some solution.......thats basically what you need to get going.....(the caps, hairnets and all the other things you may or may not use ) so my advise to you would be to get the basics, the machine the tent and solution and (of course) training......then get going make some pennies and if you want to build your kit up up you can.

Check out the link I have enclosed, you can get the T200 for an incredibly competative price and the tent from here...

Hi there,

I have just started up in july 2008. I trained with NSI as the training course was only £23.85 and I though at least if I don't do anything with it I have got a tan and some good knowlege for furture. Me being me I bought the tent before I went onto the couse. I bought it from ebay but it turned out to be a seller that lived 2 minutes from me and it was a great price and does the job. doesn't have an extractor opening but no biggie. PM me if you want details.

I then carried out the training knowing I was going to make a go of things so I bought the starter kit @ £99 basic gun pants hats and 500ml of solution. As soon as I trained I got insurance to start the first day of my first tan session. £67 odd as I am trained in nails and was going to do more so took the level2 bt insurance.

Vasaline and bed roll and that was me the tanning started. Since then I have upgraded my gun and I buy sticky feet and have a mini extractor that was made by my hubby (who is an engineer).

PM me if you want any details. I bought my new gun from a different company from nsi but nsi sell it and I got it for £228 inc vat they sell it at £299+ VAT so about £345 ish.

I have not tried the new soloution but I really like the sun labs so not overly bothered about the soloution as of yet. Will try it soon though.

I tan family and charge them just over the cost of solution as they are my walking adverts.

You can easily make your money back as long as you put the efforts into getting clients. (leaflet drops ect.) The money I have made so far has gone into further training in other areas.

HTH sorry it's a bit long.

Cath

Hi Wizbit

I would say go for it! Now would be as good a time as any to start up. By the time the busy tanning season starts (usually around spring) you should have had enough practice on friends and family to feel confident in your application and the service you offer.

There are plenty of companies out there - ring round for samples of their tan so you can try them out and see which you prefer to work with and which gives you the best option for your clients.

I can send you a Tantrick sample if you wish - pm your address details!

Also check out www.wowproducts.co.uk for their tanning equipment and solutions. There are some great packages on offer for starting up and a lot more choice now.

Good luck and happy tanning!

not VAT registered as I am not making enough yet. Think it will be a while yet for that.

I am still running at a loss at present but that is becaue I am spending what I earn on learning more.......

here I find more people are willing to go to a sunless tanning booth than they are to an aesthetician who sprays the tan on. Is that what LA tan would be like? I worked at a place that had a magictan booth and it was nice but it wasn't as popular as the owner hoped. But more people booked that than they did book a rub on or manual spray on.
I hope you get answers to your questions. I think it sounds good that they have the offer for free training with the start up kit.

I love spray tanning, I'd say go for it!! If you start now you can get loads of practise in before it gets busier towards to the summer season!
I use Tantrick (Wow Factor!, Wow Products Beauty Wholesale) they have great starter kits and accredited training (so you can get insurance - very important!).
As to registering VAT - you have to earn over £60000 I think so I hope you do need to register!!
