Hiya! Just popping in from the Nail Geek section! Hope no one minds me asking but thought this would be the best place to come!...

Im currently pregnant with just under 8 wks to go and have decided i want to treat myself to a spray tan! Ive never had one before and im so white (especially my legs that have never seen the sun!) that i look like a baked bean with no juice! Im going out for dinner with my husband next weekend for our wedding anniversary and want to wear something nice but dont dare to show my white legs! Id feel so much more confident in myself if i had just a little bit of colour!

Can anyone tell me if a) its ok to have a spray tan when preggars - and if there are any possible probs wth it b) how many sprays do you normally need to get a nice tone (i dont want to go too dark - just enough to look like ive been on holiday for a little while!) and c) how long does it normally last / how often should you top the tan up??

If it were me i wouldnt bother .I do not know that spray tans are harmful to unborn babies but i also think you you are exposing your baby to a fine spray of chemicals for what, to have a bit of colour.... you have a few weeks to go and you can tan as much as you like its just my opinion.

You should be fine to have a spray tan hun nothing can harm the baby. They normally suggest you don't have one in the first trimester due to hormonal changes. They normally last 7 - 14 days depending on how you look after it but you can always have a top up after 7 days.

Rubbish!! there is NOTHING harmful in spray tan solution whatsoever!! they only recommend that you dont have one done in the first trimester because of the hormonal changes that your body goes through that MAY make you go a bit patchy, not because there are harmful chemicals! the solution is sugar based!!!

Have your spray tan done and feel gorgeous for your anniversary! :green: I find it lasts a week, sometimes longer, but only if you look after it properly, ie moisturise loads, no long hot baths, dab dry with towel etc etc...

The only 'problem' that I have incurred with a latter stage pregnant client is that the coldness of the spray made the baby start to move about and it was hard for me to consentrate with these tin, tiny feet and hands pushing my clients tummy out ... it was actually so beautiful to watch... my client howelled with laughter. Oh then her breasts lacted a little so I would be prepared with a couple of cotten rounds just in case of such events ...

Enjoy your tan.. you will be fine and you will look gorgeous afterwards with your tanned legs and tummy :)

Definatly have your tan! im also pregnant with only 8 weeks to go! ive sprayed myself the whole way through theres nothing in a spray tan that will harm your little one! we need all the help we can to feel sexy at this stage and i certainly feels loads better when im tanned. my tans last about 7-10 days although ive found slightly less when pregnant as my skin is so much drier make sure you put lashings of moisturiser on to help maintain it afterwards x x Hope all goes well with baby and happy anniversary.

You know this to be fact then. I said i wasn't sure because i dont think there has been any studies as yet...but if you know then rubbish it is.

Its like saying that pregnant women should stop wearing perfume and make up because they have chemicals in them. Or bubble bath, soap, shampoo... the list goes on!

I'm sure that Collin will be able to clarify this one but when I was trained with Tantrick I was told that there was nothing harmful in their solution and I trust them to tell me the truth! I am sure that if there were any danger to pregnant women then it would be plastered all over the bottle.

its the same reason why perms are not recommended during pregnancy,
because of the raging hormones, it might result in the perm not taking,
nothing to do with perm solution geting into the scalp and into bloodstream

tanning in the first trimester MIGHT result in a unsuccessful tan due to the hormones raging about willy nilly, not beacuse its harmful to the baby

NOBODY knows this because no studies have been done on it there obviously is something in spray tan solutions that can be a problem else why advocate the use of nose shields and use extractors which we are supposed to do and why do some of us get a bit chesty when we have done a few.
It is a chemical which is being breathed in, the spray is very fine .
I gave my opinion, and others can give theirs and what the original poster takes out of that is for them to decide.
I would not spray a pregnant women and if i do nail enhancements on anyone pregnant i get them to wear a mask.I will also not spray with small children and babies in the room.

The ingredients in spray tans are considered harmless to use during pregnancy.

Studies have been carried out and determined that the active ingredient, DHA (dihydroxyacetone) does not penetrate the skin. DHA has been used in cosmetics since 1960 and there have never been any issues reported concerning its absorption into the skin, nor its responsibility for any pregnancy-related problems.

Spray tanning products are by far more acceptable than tanning beds are, pregnancy or not, but particularly when a woman is pregnant, tanning beds can raise the core body temperature significantly and this is extremely dangerous to the forming fetus.

Lying out in the sun has dangers all its own and should be avioded period.

Many of the studies are for skin application not inhalation which will go straight into lungs and bloodstream there are also numerous different chemicals in all the different solutions not just dha.
I at least hope that we as tanning operators should be on the side of caution and if any of us are spraying pregnant ladies or are pregnant ourselves then this is a time when nose guards and extracters should be used surely no one can argue with that.

I personally don't spray in the first trimester. I have no worries about spraying there after. It is down to the client and if they feel ok about it then I do too. They make the choice at the end of the day.

The reason I don't spray in the first trimester ... two reasons actually. The first is that the Company I represent don't advise it and this is because of the fluctuations of hormones in this 12 week period. The flucuations can cause adverse reactions to some ladies.. ie tan taking too dark, tan not taking at all and even patchy.. the client may not have their expectations met. It is best to avoid.

They have been studying spray tan products for 20 years.... and up to now it is considered safe and an excellent alternative to the natural sun and sunbeds.

i can see where you're coming from regarding breathing in solution and perhaps sniffits would be a good precaution for pregnant ladies but i don't think the application to skin is anything to worry about. I have so little overspray that I dont think there would be any cause for concern anyway but if you are pregnant and spray tanning full time then a mask is a good idea, same as if you were doing nails all day. I wouldn't make a pregnant client wear a mask to get their nails done, bet they would use household chemicals i.e bleach without thinking anything of it - and a lot more regularly than they'd get a tan or nails done too!

It is precisely the inhalation im concerned with not the topical application.
I would do a manual tan on someone pregnant but not spray i just wouldn't feel comfortable doing it i guess it would feel like i was smoking over them ...if i smoked .

There ar no known dangers whatsoever to an unborn child when a spraytan is applied to the skin surface.

The tan ,generally speaking only penetrates the skin 7 microns and is non invasive therefore unless you spray onto an open wound cannot enter the blood stream this way.

Even if it did there is no evidence thus far to indicate it would be harmfull to the unborn child.

Now Gill you are quiet right concerning inhilation issues and this is an area that all operators as well as custmers should especially endevoure to pretect themselves from when pregnant.

Not so much in relation to possible damage to the child but more in general terms...wear a mask..preferably one that covers both the nasel and mouth passages.

With pregnant females the smell of the DHA is something that could cause vomiting..so also keep a bucket handy, wear trainers so you can run fast and or a weatherproof cap.

Now pregnancy is something that should be cherished and as a pregnant female you are intrusted by nature to protect the child you are bringing into this world both before it enters it as well as during its early life(once it reaches maturity then they can fly the nest and the evalution process continues)

Now then if first time pregnent your hormones are all over the place as your body simply doesnt know what the hell is going on and reacts acordingly..if you tan during this period you could well have a tan that doesnt develope properly(patchy etc)

With subsequent pregnancies your body is better prepared ,having done it before, and in consequence hormones are more stable...however a tan can still develope patchy.

So just cos your preggers doent mean that you dont want to look good..so if you are after a sraytan go see the salon and discuss protection ,outcome possibilities fully before proceeding.

If preggers for the first time ..well try and give it a miss if you can or look at alternative ways to look and feel georgouse.

For the poster of the question..well if preggers for first time and its just your legs that you want to look good...well either wear some form of hold up stockings or alternativley get hold of a can of those spray on stockings(google it) as these use are basically heavy make up with silk powder so patchy results aren't an issue.

good luck with the bambino..do you know if it is a boy or a girl yet???

GREAT!!! so basically what you are saying then is that it isn't a good idea to have a spray tan if it is your first pregnancy because it may well go patchy, even if it isn't your first trimester??

That goes against everything I was taught on my Tantrick training course!! I have been spraying clients who are pregnant and telling them they'll be fine as they are out of the first twelve week stage and won't go patchy! I tell them this because this is what I believed to be true because I was taught this in my training!! :grr: Now I read on a forum that this may well not be the case and they should either buy a can of spray on stockings or hold up stockings to get tanned looking legs rather than have a spray tan??

Can't say that this statement makes me feel overly comfortable either...

What do you mean by that? sounds as if you do think there may be something harmful in having a spray tan rather than just the patchy issue?

I must say I am more than dissapointed!!

Do you spray tan in the first trimester as a norm Sherrie? I know Tantrick have never condoned this due to the hormone levels in the pregnacy which inturn may make adverse reactions to the tan.

Do you tan pregant ladies after the first trimester? Have you had any adverse reactions so far in your years of tanning? If not.. then why now change? Collin was giving his opinion but there are is no evidence that show that spray tanning can affect the pregnacy.

I have not been told to alter my training to say that first pregnancy's are contra indicated to spray tanning.

I think you are a bit quick on the defensive there Sherrie?

No Jen I dont spray in the first 12 weeks as I was told that It may cause a patchy tan to develop due to hormones... after this period I will spray and assure the client that they will be fine!

I dont think I am too quick on the defensive, It has come from the 'horses mouth' that tanning during pregnancy can cause a patchy tan to develop however far gone they are! Is the fact that I have had no bad reactions just down to luck? It goes against everything that I was taught and believed to be true!

If it makes a difference whether it is you first or second pregnancy (which I doubt makes any difference anyway) then should we not be taught this rather than just go off and spray people as taught and keep our fingers crossed? I trusted what I was taught to be gospel and now hear Collin recommend that the OP should avoid a tan even though she only has 8 weeks to go!! If he thinks that then why are we not all avoiding tanning during pregnancy altogether? After all he should know more than the rest of us shouldnt he?

Well to be fair Sherrie, spray tanning development and production has moved on since you and I were originally trained.... this maybe some new thinking to 'aire on the safe side'. I read online last night that offering a patch test in the 2nd trimester is a good idea due to the influx of hormonal change. Where once the solution may have been perfectly safe on the client before pregnancy.. now they may be sensitive to it. But its not a definate science.. there are a lot of mays and maybes... like I said I have not up to now been asked to change the contra indications to spray tanning.. they are the same as when you trained.

If you are in any doubt about tanning someone pregnant or not.. then don't do it.
