My hairdresser wanted to start getting a tan ready for her wedding. She went to a local tanning studio last night. She wasn't asked to fill in a form or anything and was given 16 minutes on a lie-down bed even though she is really pale. She is very red and has spent most of the night being sick. I told her to call another local tanning studio that i know is very good. She explained what happened and they said with her skin type they wouldn't have let her have more than 4 minutes on their beds!!
Does anyone have any advice as to what she should do now-thanks

That is absolutely disgraceful and irresponsible on the part of the salon in question.
It is irresponsible conduct such as this that is the very reason the sun tanning sector has received such bad press over the last few years and for goodness sake they are putting peoples lives at stake.

What you can/must do
1) lodge a formal complaint to the salon and notify them you will be contacting the authorities
2) contact your local health and safety council representative and lodge a complaint..explain basically what you have posted.
3) contact the TSA (01494 785941-Cathy Banks))and lodge a complaint..if this salon is TSA registered there in for a shock...the TSA will help you and will give you best advice as to how to
a) provide short term treatment relief from the sunburn
b) assist you with a possible compensation claim against the salon in question.
c) do something to stamp out this inappropriate and highly dangerous practice
THIS IS A SERIOUSE MATTER AND ONE YOU DO NEED TO ACT ON...REPORT IT

Lots of Aloe Vera!

The maximum amount of minutes allowed is 12 and that is only if the client has a dark skin tone and is used to going on the beds but even then we recommend it is too long,
use the number Collin has given you hun,

Thanks for the replies. Have called the salon and explained the situation and was informed that they don't do 16 mins! The fist thing i asked was how many minutes they recommend for someone with fair skin. I was told 6 mins to start with as their beds are 180 watt.
I then asked why they would give someone 16 minutes with fair skin. They said they only go up to 10 mins whic would cost £5 but my hairdresser was charged £8 and had 16 mins.
I asked if they were registered with the TSA and she asked who they were!
She said my hairdresser would have to go in so should could diagnose her!
I have taken photos and we have an aloe vera plant at work which she has been putting on.
I have told her to pop over to the doctors to see what they say but does she need to go back to the salon or should we just call the authorities?

I would just ask the lady in question first if she is SURE that it was 16 mins....?

I ain't doubting you but wouldn't want a salon to get in trouble if a slight exaggeration has been made.

If she IS sure then she should go back to salon..maybe you could go with her and see what they say.

That is shocking!! I wouldn't even bother going back to the salon, just contact the number Collin has given. I just hope that because there were no record cards filled out then the salon could deny that 16 minutes were given to your friend and it would be their word against yours. Good luck and keep us informed hun

yes we will go back later. She went with her cousin and he was given 10 mins and she was longer than him. She is 100% positive that she had 16 mins. She has been to the doctor and has been prescribed flamazine cream. She has to go back if it gets any worse.
Have called the TSA and the salon is not registered with them so they can't really do anything. Will call the local health authority and see what they say and will keep you posted.

Definatley take the matter up with the local authority as there are trading standard guidelines that salons do need to adhere to...pre registration is one of them

Bagpuss is quiet right to be fair....make sure the facts are correct before going getting anyone into trouble.

If the facts are correct this is a serious situation as not only are peoples health at risk but also the reputation of the beauty sector

It might be a case that the salon owner is not aware of whats going on in the salon...may have been a temp girlie stand in type of situation...never the less the business owner should have proper staff training and safety procedures in place to prevent this sort of situation occurring in the first instance.

The salon may have recently changed the bulbs.............maybe for a higher wattage.....

This is terrible what your friend is going through..take paracetemol too

and speak to the salon owner....

Ibuprofen may work better than paracetamol as it is an anti-inflamitory.

Also some aftersun gel in the fridge may give relief too. But only put this on when you cant put on the cream from the doctor

There is a bit in the news today about a 14 year old girl who went on sunbed for 19 minutes and has burns on 70% of her body

GOSH how awful, lots of fluids too and I know this might sound extreme but egg whites help take the sting off the pain, I dont mean instead of going to the docs, but sometimes the aftersun does not take all the heat out. beaten egg whites do. I have been in the unfortunate (but stupid ) position of falling asleep in the sun for too long alone, burnt myself even though i had sun tan lotion on and my italian housemate painted egg white on me for the relief.

It really helped and makes a makeshift after sun .

Well we went back to the salon. The salon owner was very apologetic. She said the maximum they do is 16 mins. I said that when i called earlier she had told me they don't do 16 mins. She said she would only do 16 mins for regular clients with dark skin. She saw the burns and filled in an accident report form.
She didn't offer any explanation as to why a consultation form wasn't filled in. She had spoken to the girl and had given her a warning. The girl said my hairdresser had asked what the longest time was that she could go on but my hairdresser said she had asked the girl how many minutes she should have.
Anyway the salon asked what she could do and i said she should make sure her staff were aware of skin types and how many minutes people should have.
We left with a voucher for free nail extensions and a toe polish!
I did call the environmental health and am awaiting a call back.
The salon owner was not in the shop when the incident occured.
To top it all off when we went back she had her dog in the salon-geez!!!!!!!!

Sounds like the salon is an accident waiting to happen!! Sometimes though these accidents can be very serious and places like this that give the whole industry a bad name.
Here in Australia there is such bad publicity with sunbeds. It has now been outlawed for people with pale skin that measure 1 on the Fitzpatrick scale to go on them. There has been lots of ads on tv showing people who are very young who have developed skin cancer and passed away. They made the ad when they were terminal and it is just devistating (one girl did a campaign before she passed on about sunbed and got the laws changed here in Aus).
I would suggest that people spend their money and go and have some nice facials and body treatment and forget the tan? it ages you before your time and can have life threatening consequences. I know what I would be doing!!
