Taking on staff - where do i start?

Hiya!
I've been a solo nail tech for nearly ten months now (i've been a tech for 4 years), and i'm at the point of being fully booked two weeks ahead. I'm seriously thinking of taking on a member of staff, and i've had two girls enquiring about jobs. Problem is, how do i go about it, and where do i start? Are there any laws, etc i have to look into? I know i have to change my public liability etc, but what else. And does anyone know of any training schemes for help with pay, etc? Please help me!
 
i think the best thing would be to advertise locally the job, and as part of the interview make sure you do a thorough trade test!!!
also checking the quality of her work approx a week later (have her demo on 1 of your friends!)
you will have to insure your employee on your policy, as your bussiness would be liable.
also let the inland revenue know, and your accountant...
check references thoroughly, and ask lots of q&a's including problem solving!

Deffinatly advatise the job as the more people you interview the people you will have to choose from and therefore you will find a perfect person. :D:D:D
 
You can only get help with wages if you take on an apprentice or i think
the job centre have a scheme for people that have been unemployed for
a while. I would contact your local job centre as it is free to advertise a job
vacancy and sometimes they advertise the vacancy over the radio.
inland revenue will send you an employee pack and cd rom and there are
courses run by business link to help you.
I do admit that employing somebody is far easier then renting a table or room
to somebody as you have full control if they are employed by you.
also get a contract written up for when they start.
 
Think very carefully.

What are you really going to gain?? Usually a heap of extra worry.

If you are doing so well on your own then I would stay on your own and rent space instead, to a similarly good technician.

If I had to do it all over again I would NEVER employ anyone. I would booth rent. Why? think of the advantages: The up side

No wages or NI to pay.

Guaranteed rent every week of the year, rain or shine.

If the technician is ill it is up to her to cancel all appointments and shift things around NOT you.

YOU control your own till stocks etc. and the salon. They control theirs.


The down side

Provided the tech sticks to your salon rules and respects good business ethics ... I can't think of any.


The main thing to consider when renting space is clearly stating the gound rules before you start so that everyone is aware and agrees to them.
 
Thanks for your response geeg. What does everyone else think about the employing someone VS renting space thing?
 
Personally I couldnt agree more with Geeg. Have a think about what you want to do. In the end it will be down to you and what you decide.
Do you feel you are ready to take on staff and all the extra money and hard work they take up? At the moment you and your clients are the only things you need to worry about. How will you feel and cope with more to deal with, financially and mentally?

Im a one man band and for me, taking on staff is not something I want. Im happy to be busy AND be on my own.
 
I agree with the above, plus theres no way I'd have paid out thousands on training for someone to pay me £6 an hour - I think not! Let someone else have the worry hun, just rent it out :)
