Hi all, Just wondering if anyone in the nail industy have been affected by the credit crunch! or if they think they will be?????

Hi joanne

I dont know about down south but here in Scotland I seem to be ok for now.

The appointment book is busy although I duno if this is just in the run up to xmas. But who know what will happen after the man in the red suit as been an gone.

Well I've lost my job

i lost mine a few months ago, hense the change in career direction, and now hubbie has been told that they are making 10 people redundant at the end of the week. BUT i refuse to let this get us down. We will find a way. Am a believer in hard graft and positive thoughts.

Hugs to you pink , hope you find something soon.

well i am fighting to keep my main job at the moment.......

But i am thinking along the lines of if the worst does happen i have got the nail industry to fall back on...... even though i did eventually want to sway more to the nail profession in a few years time when the kids are older, i was hoping to do it when i was ready rather than being pushed, but may be i never would have done it so it may work out good in the end.
xx

Ive just had to put my girl on short time and a salon down the way have put there staff on short time as well

im self employed near hull, its a bit quiet at mo, i thought its just the time
of year but after looking at books iv realised iv had 3 regulars dissapear.
i am getting a little worried. xmas is guaranteed to be hectic as usual its just afterwards im scared about :irked:

I have had a few younger / single mothers take their nails off.. but I have to say the main "bulk" of my business is mature ladies who have no kids at home and would rather die than take their nails off.. What i have seen is those we used to come every 2 weeks are pushing it to 3 etc. Formal times here in Australia are now and xmas is coming so every one wants their nails done...

I hope those who have lost their jobs find somehting real quick.. good luck to those
Mel

I've lost 2 really good regulars, I used to do these 2 on a Monday and they had 90 minutes each. I no longer work Mondays!!!

Work is definetly slowed down, my Tuesday evenings were always fully booked and now they are half full.

christmas is going to be busy for most people who do beauty and nails, but as I do holistics, I don't think I will get a rush.

I am planning on lots of detox treatments for January and am planning on giving all regulars a voucher to use in january, so hope that it brings a few extra bits of work in.

I do have my die-hards that I see every 2-4 weeks, they keep me sane!

I think the nail/beauty industry will be affected, it's a luxury service and when times get tough it'll be luxuries that people knock on the head first. There will be ladies who would still have their nails done no matter what, but in the coming months, very few people will have the luxury of being able to make such a decision.

My business has already been affected by the credit crunch. Local salons are dropping their prices almost daily. This resulted in my salon becoming quiet, and so in order to keep people coming through the door, I've very reluctantly had to follow suit.

Secondly, one of the major employers in Bradford has just made hundreds redundant, with more to follow. They havent finished work yet, they're on 90 day notices. This will have a big impact on Bradford businesses because they are such a large employer that every salon will have a good percentage of clients who are employers of this firm. Even though they havent finished work yet, a couple of mine have already stopped having their nails done since they have to save money while they still have it, and I know that when they stop work, a few more will, in the very least, postpone having their nails done until they find other work.

I think the best thing for us all to do in these times is to accept that the economic downturn will affect our businesses, and to look at ways of maximising our turnover, both of new and existing customers. Better to do that and be prepared than stick our heads in the sand and pretend it'll go away I think.

I'm new to the nail bussiness and work from home but it got me thinking, when two estate agents who are clients of mine, have been made redundant, they have worked with the company for ten years and the company will have to pay out redundancy money, this makes me think why would they do this???? Sorry to be negative but the credit crunch may be with us for a while, But it will pass....

Ahh, it's really sad to hear that people are losing out on hours/losing their jobs. I think its up to us to try our best to persuade customers to pass up other treats such as meals out/weekend breaks by giving every treatment our all in terms of service.

Hi thing are slowing down there is one nail salon that has closed near me and the one i used to worki in is no longer offering a nail service at all. I feel that down here people are not spending out on thing like having there nails done . Only the other day one of my regulars (who can not live without her nails) phone to say she would have to wait till she had been paid to see if she would have enought money to get her nails done.I have also done a bit ofadvertising and my clients say they have given my number out but not hear a ****y bird thought that this time of year would be a good time for me but it does not look like that will be the case.

Two of my clients who I would consider the "death before natural nails" types have cancelled their appointments because they cant afford it. Both have said they will re-book when they have the money, and I have every faith that they will, but it's a sure sign that things are slowing down and that you cant even depend on the die-hard clients.

I think the nail/beauty industry will be affected, it's a luxury service and when times get tough it'll be luxuries that people knock on the head first.

In my experience many people don't see their leg wax, eyebrow shape, eyelash tints & so forth as a luxury. Even my clients who were/are estate agents have carried on with their facials & so forth. Their reasoning? If they can't have the occassional treat then there is no point in working!

It's sad that some businesses are closing, but my own & others I know are actually thriving. I'm having the best Sept-Nov I've had in the last 12 years, my retail has doubled & I'm pretty much fully booked to December. It's not all doom & gloom.

My salon has slowed down a little, our sunbeds are soooo dead. Its not worth me turning them on, our beauty is a bit quiet too but christmas is fully booked, working from 8 till 8, client every hour, all re-balances. Our individual lashes are really popular too, but we have reduced the price for a christmas special. Spray tans are reduced too. Think we need to ride thru this credit crunch....well i'm not giving up yet x
