THIS IS WORTH SHARING!!!
"Have you ever noticed girls who sit their handbags on public toilet floors, then go directly to their dining tables and set it on the table?
Happens alot!

It's not always the 'restaurant food' that causes stomach distress.
Sometimes "what you don't know 'will' hurt you"!

Read on...

Mum got so upset when guests came in the door and plopped their handbags down on the counter where she was cooking or setting up food. She always said that handbags are really dirty, because of where they have been. Smart Mum!!!

It's something just about every woman carries with them. While we may know what's inside our handbags, do you have any idea what's on the outside?
Shauna Lake put handbags to the test - for bacteria - with surprising results. You may think twice about where you put your handbag.
Women carry handbags everywhere; from the office to public toilets to the floor of the car. Most women won't be caught without their handbags, but did you ever stop to think about where your handbag goes during the day?

"I drive a school bus, so my handbag has been on the floor of the bus a lot," says one woman. "On the floor of my car, and in toilets."

"I put my handbag in grocery shopping carts, on the floor of the toilet while changing a nappy," says another woman "and of course in my home which should be clean."

We decided to find out if handbags harbour a lot of bacteria. We learned how to test them at Nelson Laboratories in Salt Lake, and then we set out to test the average woman's handbag.

Most women told us they didn't stop to think about what was on the bottom of their handbag. Most said at home they usually set their handbags on top of kitchen tables and counters where food is prepared.

Most of the ladies we talked to told us they wouldn't be surprised if their handbags were at least a little bit dirty. It turns out handbags are so surprisingly dirty, even the microbiologist who tested them was shocked.

Microbiologist Amy Karen of Nelson Labs says nearly all of the handbags tested were not only high in bacteria, but high in harmful kinds of bacteria. Pseudomonas can cause eye infections, staphylococcus aurous can cause serious skin infections, and salmonella and e-coli found on the handbags could make people very sick.

In one sampling, four of five handbags tested positive for salmonella, and that's not the worst of it. "There is fecal contamination on the handbags," says Amy.
Leather or vinyl handbags tended to be cleaner than cloth handbags, and lifestyle seemed to play a role.

People with kids tended to have dirtier handbags than those without, with one exception. The handbag of one single woman who frequented nightclubs had one of the worst contaminations of all.
"Some type of feces, or possibly vomit" says Amy.

So the moral of this story - your handbag won't kill you, but it does have the potential to make you very sick if you keep it on places where you eat.
Use hooks to hang your handbag at home and in toilets, and don't put it on your desk, a restaurant table, or on your kitchen countertop.
Experts say you should think of your handbag the same way you would a pair of shoes. "If you think about putting a pair of shoes onto your countertops, that's the same thing you're doing when you put your handbag on the countertops" - your handbag has gone where individuals before you have sneezed, coughed, spat, urinated, emptied bowels, etc!
Do you really want to bring that home with you? The microbiologists at Nelson also said cleaning a handbag will help.

Wash cloth handbags and use leather cleaner to clean the bottom of leather handbags."

Dont know about you but, I'm off to go over the bottom of mine with an antibacterial wipe!! Ewwww

Did you know that a test carried out on a bowl of peanuts in a pub brought up something like 13 different traces of male urine, because they hadn't washed ther hand after going to the loo? So where does it end? we live in a plastic bubble? Most people get so ill now because we live in such a sanitised day to day environment and have no natural immunity to bugs as a result.

However I do always put my handbag on the hook of the back of a public loo door. Not only because most loo floors are just disgusting, but as a result of a video I saw on female personal security. It is one of the easiest ways of getting your handbag stolen, Someone just snatches it from underneath the door, and of course you are busy doing other things and can't go running after them.

I too hang my bag on the back of the door but only because of the state of the floors. I never thought of a hand coming underneath, if that happened to me I would, eh well, need the loo again:eek:

Sometimes it is best not even thinking of these things, ignorance can be bliss ......but now you have mentioned it eeeww ......I will certainly be more handbag concious! Whilst I too always use hooks on the back of doors for my bag, it gets put in the footwell of my car right beside feet that have walked into the toilet cubicles!

Thanks for sharing that one with us! lol

I hang it on the back of the door for fear of someone snatching it from underneath or leave hubbie holding it.

Maybe they should put handbags full of peanuts on the bar instead of bowls

I never let my mind wander this far usually cos it freaks me out being such a clean freak! What about with cans of drink when they are in the warehouses full of dust and rats, handled by many dirty fingers of many nationalities and then....we drink from them without washing them first!

Honestly its enough to give me nightmares:eek:

I dont think it was meant funny, but I know what you mean..

My Ali ALWAYS breaks off the pull ring and puts it in the ashtray, the thoroughly wipes the area at the top of the can where he drinks from for the same reason.
he said sometimes cans are stacked on the floor, then on top of each other, and you dont know where the dirty can has been.
I find it strange and argue that if he does that why not clean the whole can, where your holding it too?
He just shrugs his shoulders.. and says what about the bird poo?
Bottle tops on milk bottles nearly always have bird poo!! LOL
Saying that, I havent seen a milk bottle around for years. We dont get delievies where we live.

Anyway, back on the subject of the germs.. if we delve to far into this, it would be mad.
we all pick up germs from all sorts, I mean, we have immune systems that are there to attack such a germ picked up, surely.

Thinking about it all does give me the heebie geebies though. LOL xx

We were always told that you need a bit of dirt. Babies that are wrapped up in cotton wool and never allowed to mix with other children and things are not going to build up the immune system they will need later on in life. Its good to be careful but theres being too careful.

Ewww! Considering how much I spend on my bags, I'm definately going to be more aware of where I'm putting it now!

Don't get me wrong I ALWAYS wipe the can before I open it cos of germs from animals and humans (yuk gross!) but I don't think it matters what nationality they are, anyone can be a dirty b****d and not wash their hands after toilet/nose picking/god only know what else!

I must admit I very rarely take a hand bag with me ... I'm too worried of having it pinched again ... but if I do, I hang it up on the hooks of the doors & it goes on the passenger seat of my car when I'm driving! It also goes through the washer once a week as its cloth as it tends to get dirty!!

I never take any free peanuts or mints that are on those dishes ... eeewwww!

yeah I agree, the nationality doesnt matter.

Just think also, my car steering wheel is touched by the same hand that opened the car door thats got dead bugs on it! :smack:
Germs are transmitted so easily though.. I have these infared xray visions now, ..of , like on that 'touching raw chicken' advert and not washing your hands after. ewwww
