Hiya guys,

I have just started my VTCT in Mani and pedi at college - woohoo! I've got to buy my college kit by mid-October, as that's when I'll start needing it all the time. But, I'm a bit miffed that it's £100!

Does anyone have a list of the kit that I'll need for the course, then I could take myself to Sally's and get it cheaper hopefully?!

Or should I buy the college kit? Need your help/advice/lists please!

Thanks dudes! D* xXx

Your college should provide you with a list of what’s exactly in the kit and the supplier they got it from. It will vary from college to college

You can go along to the supplier and purchase the bits separately but usually your college will negotiate a lower rate for your kit. So if your kit was £100 it would more than likely to cost £125+ if you brought all the bits separately.

Personally if its your first course I’d stick with the college kit then when you do further courses you will have the basics and can just add to your current kit.

£100 is about the average for a nail starter kit.

Hope this helps

Hi, when i done my course last year i just used the college kit, however there were some things missing from my kit that i found i needed the course, also the college kit doesnt last very long, i found that i spent about another £60-70 topping up my kit

Hey dudes,

Thanks for your replies! :wink2:

I guess £100 isn't too much, it just sounded like a lot for the amount of kit you get. One of the girls on my course said you don't get much in it for the money, and unfortunately the college just gave me the order form for the kit so I'm not sure what to do?

I guess I better get the kit ordered before I really do need it! But if anyone does have a basic list of essential bits I need that'd be great! :green:

Thanks again, D* xXx

I would say the things you will use most often are:
Nail files
Cuticle Pusher
Cuticle Knife
Cuticle Nippers
Nail scissors or clippers
Cuticle Cream/ Remover
Foot Rasp
Orange sticks
Base/ Top coat
Polishes
Brush for Masks/ Paraffin wax
Lint Free Wipes

Than if you want more than the basic manicure equipment
Exfoliator
Foot Mask
Hand Mask
Hand Cream

There are the main bits but you may find ohter things more useful

Also nail buffers...

Hi

I think for a starter kit £100 is a lot of money.. I paid £45 for my kit for my VTCT Nail Treatments last year. Granted it was fairly basic and I made additions to it but I preferred this as I was able to choose which brand of product I wanted for the more specialist items, e.g. nail oil, exfoliator, mask etc.

However, it is the college themselves that decided which brand of product is the recommended one and what they require to be in it based on the standards within the qualification. This does not mean that you have to buy the brand they recomment. If I couldn't afford £100 (and I wouldn't have) I would have asked for the kit list and then purchased my own as indeed some of my fellow students did.

I would expect quite a lot for £100 given that you may even decided to change the brand of product once you qualify... just my opinion.

 I totally agree, this is exactly what I was thinking. But now I have the kit list which a fellow geek has left above, I will definately take myself to Sally's and build my own kit. When one of my other girls at college get their kit I'll see if I'm missing anything!

Thanks again guy for all your help and advice, you are all too kind!

Your lucky my college kit cost £125 but it was a fantastic kit and I am still using it now, haven't had to top it up at all. But again I think it depends on the products your college uses too, my college used creative so thats why it has lasted because the products are great. xxx

Our kit contained polish and consumables that had had to be risk assessed by college. We weren't allowed to use other products as an alternative due to the health and safety rules. You may find buying items seperately more expensive too as gemsie says.

Before you go spending money buying your kit yourself, you ought to speak to your tutor first, just to confirm what you need and whether it is acceptable for your course.

We can all tell you all the things that we use in business but firstly you may not actually need them all and secondly they may not be suitable for your course in which case you may end up spending more money than you're trying to save.

so speak to someone who knows your course and then decide. And Sallys is only cheaper if you have a trade card - have you applied for one?

Hiya,

Yes I applied for a card the day after I received my student card for college! That place is a god-send lol! :)

So from what you are all saying, the general idea is to speak to my tutor. I think I'll have a chat with her and see what she says. At least then I won't waste money buying items I don't need and won't use! And also the risk assessment comment above didn't even cross my mind, thank you for pointing that out! A bit worrying that I might have used something dodgy and not good!

Thanks again guys! Always the helpful bunch! :green:
