This really saddens me, I just qualified and have spent weeks sending my CV to every salon and spa in a 15 mile radius, I had two replies stating there were no positions but thanks for the interest and 1 thankfully offering a telephone interview, I'm over the moon someone would even consider a 28 year old mum of 3 whose background mostly lies in telesales. I would work any hours offered and juggle child care accordingly. Why are people just throwing away opportunity? Especially when there are many who would jump at the chance to get beyond the application stage. I can't imagine the exasperation you must be feeling. I'm sure your next therapist is there and all this messing around will seem a distant memory. Good luck

Hi Julie,

Where abouts in Wales are you? I'm just opening up a new salon and I'm looking for somebody.

That's a good idea I might have to do the same. I have a back ground in physio and no salon experience I hope they don't laugh when they read my cv lol I don't know how I can make my past work relevant to nails x

Hi Julie,

Where abouts in Wales are you? I'm just opening up a new salon and I'm looking for somebody.

I am in Gwent in South Wales, not too far from Cardiff.

I imagine with a background in physio it gives you good people skills on a one to one basis? I read through some example personal statements for career change CV's to get some ideas.

I suppose for me being able to sell double glazing rather successfully over the phone means I could sell retail products with no problems, after all, double glazing isn't the easiest to sell, people don't think much about windows.

Just read you post and it was like reading my diary, if I had one. I've just been trying to replace 2 good full time therapists and the only experienced therapist who applied for the job rang and left a message on reception just 24 hours before her first day to say she was taking a job closer to home. Another girl never returned my calls after her interview at all. I've ended up employing 2 new girls with less than a years experience each who are going to need a lot of extra training and help. Where are all the experienced therapists?

This is what's wrong. Salons only want the experienced therapists, how are newly qualified therapists supposed to get experienced if no one is willing to employ them? (I know you took two on but I'm guessing only because you found no experienced therapists)

I have less than a year's experience and I'm quite confident that I am a good therapist, trust me experienced doesn't always mean better. I have worked for a big spa and knew plenty of therapists there some with years experience and some fresh out of college.

Now I'm working for another big company.

If I hadn't started out as a receptionist for a spa and got lucky with my manager and offered a beauty therapist position I don't know what I would've done. I was applying to anything and everything but no one wanted to know as I had no experience.....

I don't think the problem is specific to the industry. On a lot lower level there is the same problem in retail and all sorts. My mrs been ranting about the same thing for a few weeks because she is about to graduate psychology at uni and all the post grad positions want experience. Bit difficult.

I'm looking for someone who is passionate about the industry, confident in their ability and willing to work at getting clients to love them and their work and retaining them, oh and someone who is hungry for promotion.

I don't care how long they've been doing it as long as they can and want to do it!! :)

Maybe it's difficult to find someone because most people are going mobile these days or working for themselves and would rather put most of the money in their pockets rather than being paid £7 (roughly) per hour

The pay in the beauty industry is considered low and maybe people just don't want to work doing massage etc for a low wage and they're thinking id rather go mobile or work for myself etc

Just a thought!

I think £7 an hour is really good if you work in a salon it's guaranteed income, includes holiday pay and you not having to buy your own products maybe it's just me lol

Julie liz thanks for the cv tips you v good at this I think you will get a job in no time if you write your cv like that. Good luck

If you live at home with your parents £7 an hour is fine. If you've got a family, mortgage, car, bills etc. £7 an hour is a joke. Based on a 40 hour week, that's £280 gross per week. How can you survive?

I'm currently qualified to hnc level in beauty but all the jobs I'm seeing are asking for at least a years experience and hnd qualified. I am hoping to go back to college and finish my hnd this year but I would love to get into a salon even part time to fit around college. If I had an employer who was happy to help me build up my skills and confidence I would be happy to work any hours they required! I'll be almost 27 when I finish my hnd so I don't think that would work in my favour if I have no experience.

I've been advertising for a couple of months. Had 2 applicants. One didn't want to be self employed but thought they would come along anyway(?!) the other : working in a salon, client base that would follow etc, done barbering. I'm thinking ooh great this sounds promising.

Turns out her "working" in a salon is actually doing models for her NVQ and she didn't actually know what self employed meant but wanted to see if I would employ her instead.

Not sure how much clearer it needs to be : Self Employed stylist required to rent a chair in a busy, city centre boutique salon. Reasonable rental rate & access to all salon products/backwash products included along with laundry and use of telephone.

Hmmmm

In my area everyone wants 5 years experience before they will even entertain you so the only option is to rent a chair.

I would love to be employed and enhance my skills and learn more but no one is willing to give the opportunity so I constantly put myself through colouring and cutting courses to gain more knowledge. Im always researching and learning new techniques but as self employed and renting a chair.

There are only so many times you can contact all the salons in the area and they don't want a newly qualified person. Ive come into hairdressing later in life as I had children young and had to work in a 9-5 to pay the bills, I wish I had done an apprenticeship but life doesnt always plan out the way you think.

Some people do want the world for nothing in return but some of use would like the chance to prove themselves x

It's just a bit disheartening, I've paid a lot of money to do my courses and now am being asked for work for £6.31? I may as well have not bothered spending the money and got a job in ASDA. Surely when you train in something it should be worth more than that.

This is what I think. You ladies spend fortunes on education and on salons eventually and unless you go high end and specialist the return on investment is over such a long period.

I think everyone will probably agree it's a job you do because you love it, not always for the money.

Banner penguin I completely agree
