Why don't they teach our Bread & Butter?

Why is is that every company tends to concentrate on getting your money and getting you out?

They teach you how to apply nails, but not how to maintain them.

Maintenance is our bread and butter, but is often ignored in basic training.

I think putting on a full set is pretty simple, compared to doing an infill/rebalance with a crack here, a chip there, a bit of lift on one side, a bit of pocket lifting etc.

INFILLS ARE WHAT WE DO THE MOST OF, BUT ARE TAUGHT THE LEAST, UNLESS DOING AN EXTRA COURSE.

Do newbies realised they are being ripped off by not concentrating on the refill service?

It's no wonder so many new techs fail and feel forlorn, when in actual fact they are not really taught how to make money ......WHICH IS BY DOING REFILLS AND BACKUP SERVICE, which brings our clients back every few weeks, rather than sourcing a new tech, when they find out their current tech doesn't have the knowledge to deal with issues.

WHAT ABOUT THE TECHS THAT DON'T KNOW ABOUT SALONGEEK AND ARE THROWN INTO THE REAL WORLD WITH SUCH LITTLE KNOWLEDGE.

What infill training did you have as a student ?

It's proven that repetition can breed successful training, for repetition to work in training, you would have to do many weeks and many infills, how many schools actually teach this?

I could rant, but I'm sure replies will spur me onto shorter posts, questions and answers.

IF PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, WHY NOT MORE SUPERVISED PRACTICE?

Even painting a nail can be an issue when not repeated often enough, with all this teaching of the "French Look" where does the opportunity and repetitive opportunity to practise occur ?

WHEN YOU ARE ALONE ?

It's all about business I think. If I put my cynical head on I would say that working like this creates more one to one and follow on training classes? I totally agree that most of us have struggled with the infill and maintenance bit and wondered where the training was. I understand that training is an ongoing thing but what happens 2 weeks after we do our first nails? Yes, they return for maintanance!

I think this is why we see so many sets of nails with clear evidence of infills having been carried out, I have even taken over a client recently who had several shades of pink used, bit like a rainbow effect! I am sure this is down to the training as I can't imagine anyone who cared so little about not doing a good job.

Hi, I am seriously considering doing the CND signature5 Foundation course and just wanted to check that they cover maintainance?

Also do they teach you to do pink and whites, people say on here that that is so popular, just want to make sure that the course covers what I need to know or will I also need to do another course after???

I agree with you 100%...It is rebalances that bring in my weekly wage....its easy to impress a client with a new set...to keep them impressed is another thing.

Sometimes those different shades of pink are caused by the same product (poor quality) that has aged, from pink when new to peachy to apricot!!

It is impossible to learn everything you need to know on just a Foundation Course so training has to be on going ... of course it has ... no one could take everything in in one hit. We certainly do include re balancing as part of the CND Foundation course but the ideal would be even more days and more problem solving... I agree totally it is our bread and butter.

Carl is describing my DREAM school ... where there is a working salon attached for students to rent space and to work supervised on the public for inexpensive rates until truly competent. I have always wanted to do it.

mmmmm, perhaps I can kidnap you on your next visit to AUS (very soon), burn your passport, screw up your return visa, have you listed as a terrorist and bribe your hubbie.

Then we can talk skewls and edyookayshun

Oh Geeg please, please, pleaseeeeeee do it! I would jump at the chance to attend a course like that near to me.

I wondered if there was actually a nail course where you have to meet a certain standard or criteria before you pass - something more than actually attending?

Well on the CND Foundation it is not an automatic attendance certificate ... it never has been. There are new things happening at CND regarding education in the very near future too ... changes in the wind!!! lol

No need to be too drastic !!

A 6 hour lunch in Watson's Bay and a bottle or two of Australian Chardonnay will swing it quite nicely.

I wish!!

So true. I believe the requirment here before testing is 10 sets of complete gel nails. This province cranks out nail techs after 12 weeks of training. In those twelve weeks they attend classes 2 days per week. I see a lot of students failing their exams because they just aren't ready.

It makes me really sad. It is also very surprising to me that one of the unregulated provinces (BC) has the highest level of education! Go figure.

It is always the same thing .. at the end of the day it comes down to money.

Anyone who has been a member of this site for any amount of time can see that 9 out of 10 people want cheap education rather than good education ... because cheap education and good education are not two things that go together.

It's a case of balancing your education prices so that one can still compete and not price oneself out of the market and still offer good education. Offering classes that are modular and elective has worked for CND ... all the classes are there but at the discretion of the student to update and attend when they can and funds permit. In this manner, those who do want to commit to thorough and great education with CND can do so over a time period that will allow them to really take in the information rather than trying to cram too much into a short time period and end up at sixes ans sevens.

It's a job to know what order to do things in, I find. I have had 121s since my foundation course and like having my teacher all to myself. I have never really understood when you're supposed to be ready for masterclasses and what sort of level you're supposed to be at to consider this?

The varying colours of pink were not ageing but one pink one clear and then an opaque. She said she got a different girl every time and one of the powders was quite pink the other looked white etc. I know what you mean by the product ageing and looking different but it was definitely not this, just a poor service.

Hi i completed the CND Foundation course in September last year. I absolutely loved the course and i loved everything that we learned but when it comes to rebalancing and refils i wish there had been more training on this but unfortunately they were only able to teach us through theory obviously, as there were no nails needing doing in the class, and what the the theory thought to us was spot on but putting it into actual practice is a lot harder. I find that this is probably where i am finding things hardest, i feel like just taking everything off and starting again because anytime i have tried to rebalance i have not been happy with the results at all but again i know its a long learning curve and i just have to put in the time. I am going to practice pratice for a while and then have a one to one to help me. One to ones are not that expensive and i think really worth it for what you will get out of them and as well as that the girls in creative academy (in Dublin anyway) are more than happy to talk to you over the phone aswell, so that helps knowing you have somebody you can talk these things through with.

Hi Girls

I am doing a vtct in nail tec. at college at the mo. this course is covering most things from health, safety, security and employment standards, maincure, application of Acrylics, maintenance and repair of acyrlic, really glad I chose to do this course as I am learning so much I know I will still have so much more to learn once I am let loose.

Before I enrolled for this course at college I actually paid a deposit on a week long course for acrylics but changed my mind because I felt you could not learn what is needed in a week. They prob. only show you how to put acryics on as well. But it makes me mad because it is like you say they just want to take your money !

But thats just my opinion I may be wrong but I feel better going out there better educated in the business.

So do I.

It would be perfect. Colleges do this for beauty and hairdressing. We need it for nails.
I'm still in the stage of practise, but I am running out of people to practise on. I'm haveing problems with infills (filling) and have no idea what to do with a crack, lol

They must do things differently in Ireland because Rebalancing is covered very thoroughly on all CND Foundation classes in the UK and everywhere else that I know of.

my intention wasn't to open a can of worms, nor to criticise anyone/any company.
It's just that we do more refills than full sets, yet this isn't concentrated on enough in courses....... there are so many variables when doing a refill/rebalance that I really feel there should be more time concentrated on this service ....... yet many are "set free" well before being competent at backup service.
nearly every refill is different from the next.
