I own a little salon in North Wales with my business partner. We were thinking of offering people the opportunity to come into the salon as work experience gals/guys.

SO, for those of you how have not long come out of CND or NSI training(only because we are CND AND NSI techs) would you like this idea? BUT we are not educators , so we wouldnt be teacing you, just offering tips and hints if we felt we could.

We wouldnt be paying you, you would need to bring your own kit and products and we are not teachers. But what we would be doing is giving you the chance to have a practise , get some experience. What you made per client would be yours but it wouldnt be much, and the client doesnt go with you.

Thoughts please! good . bad , terrible idea?

I am wanting to spread some love and thought it might be nice to do this. however, i have no idea practically whether it would work!!!

I think it is a lovely idea Tigi and any new tech would be well set gaining experience within a salon envionment :) Shame I am not in North Wales or trained with a good company :(

we are only sayin CND or NSI because we trained with them too and know how the product works, but we wouldnt be teaching as we are not educators.

Brittone, if you could do it, would you be happy for it to be a few weeks only?

Sadly hun I am only just starting my course and don't drive as yet ( see the other thread about home based learning for my situation lol )

I would, if I could, jump at the chance though hun with both feet :)

its good to hear that you like the idea. I shall await others thoughts and see what the general concenus is and then have a think about it!

thanks for your input hon

Very welcome hun, good luck with it xxxx

Any new nail tech would jump at this opportunity as it's a great way to gain salon experience and gain some confidence at the same time

My sister has recently trained and would LOVE to do something like this (pity we're in Ireland)

I'm just a little unsure as to why you and your partner would want to do it.... sorry to be negative, but I think it might be more hassle than it's worth

I would love it !

But I am too far away

I think its a great idea and I would jump at the chance

I would love it too, but sadly too far away x

What would we get? well, financially nothing. but we would get other things, a good feeling. the chance to work with aspiring nail techs, to help them gain some confidence.

I got some amazing kindness last year from Sweet Squared, id like to give a bit back....simples...lol xxx

I too think it would be a great opportunity for new techs!! confidence building and great experience with the back up of experienced tech's to troubleshoot as well, if I was in your area and had trained in the same produsts would jump at the chance as well, hope a few get to take advantage of the fab offer!! x

Wow!! well that is very very generous of you and I wish you the very best with it... I hope whoever gets to work in your salon appreciates the fabulous opportunity that you are giving them.

I too think it would be a lovely idea for new techs! I think the idea of only doing it for a few weeks sounds good though, that way you get to give back a little love without risking having clients poached!!

My only negative thought is would your customers be happy with a newly qualified tech, especially if its a new girl every time they come back for a rebalance.....

Its a very nice thing to help others, not done often enough either!!

my only concern would be the clients. Maybe have them sign a waiver? If the new girl tears their fingers up they can't sue? I would have loved the chance to gain in shop epierence but i think it may be a big risk if you end up with a picky client and a not so good nail tech. you may lose clients if they leave unhappy and then spread the word that you have underqualified techs working in your salon.

i do think with some tweaking that the idea is fabulous and you should definatly try to tie the loose ends and do it!

well we have thought about this and we would be only be advertising this as a training experience. I wont be asking our regular clients to take this on. the techs would be qualified of course, they would need to hold the correct certificates and undergo a 'working test'.

We would make it very clear to anyone booking in that they are getting a nail stylist ' in the making' and what that involves, if they wanted perfect nails, then they can come to me or jodie and not a fledging stylist. We wouldnt book any clients in that we had doubts about. their work would be checked afterwards and if they had any problems, we would help of course.

well, we will keep refining this idea and let you know the outcome. I think we can make it work, its just a case of refining the idea and going from there! OOHHHH how exciting!!!!!!!!!

THank you all for your comments and ideas. very grateful xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Tigi, after meeting you a while ago i instantly new that you were a good person and if there are any newbie techs out there they should be jumping at your offer.
It all sounds like the kind of stuff dreams are made of!!! but this kind of start for someone may just have a happy ending.
As a salon owner myself for many years we have took on friends and daughters over the years before and some have added to the atmosphere of the salon and been great fun as they were fitting in and learning, then gone on to be great tech's and valuable assets to the salon.
So don't be shy folks, get in there!!!

Hi Tigi I think its a great idea,,such a great way to learn x

Hi Tigi I think your idea is fantastic and very generous ......When I first completed my training at a local college I was desperate to have the experience of a salon to get the feel for things and just watch the pros at work as I knew I had a lot of practice in front of me I suppose you could say I was looking for a mentor of a sort and knew very little about the running of a salon or systems available.
I wrote to all the local salons explaining my recent VCT qualification and asking if I could just spend a few hours a week where I would be happy to fold towels take appointments make coffee anything as long as I could see how they did it and maybe pick up some valuable tips & make some friends in my time. I never got a reply from any of them there were 3 in particular that I would have loved to gain experience with so I rang those three .... one by one I was so let down and made to feel my qualification was worth ZILCH NADA, basically I was told that my qualification was not one that was respected within the industry and I would be better off getting myself on a product specific training course I felt I had wasted the last 18 months ...... then I found Salon Geek .... and after research etc did my initial NSI training.

Now I know you are talking product specific work experience but still what a great opportunity you are offering and I bet if I had written to you I would have been given the opportunity just to float in your salon and make coffee & make friends.

Good on you.

Hi,
I'd just like to say that I am due to qualify from college in a couple of months and would jump at an oppertunity like this. The prospect of leaving college and working on complete strangers straight away is really daunting! If someone would let me do this for a few hours on a Saturday I would bite their arm off! It would really help build my confidence. I think it is a fantastic idea! Good Luck! xx
