On FB today, eyebrow tint £5 with a free eyelash tint. So they are giving away a higher priced treatment (for free) that takes longer to do and costs them more in materials..... ok
How can they even make a living though?! This girls mobile too

Totally agree with this post. We were charging more for beauty 20 years ago than we are now. I actually closed my beauty dept, as it was more hassle than it was worth. Thank god I'm a hairdresser. This is a thread that I feel very strongly about. I qualified as a Therapist some 30yrs ago (probably before most of you guys were born)!!
During this time I have seen huge changes within the industry. Not all good. I recently saw an advert for 3hrs of pampering (Facial body massage pedicure manicure) lunch and a glass of champagne for £30.!!
This was within a large city centre salon/spa.
It really saddened me as it justs demeans our profession. There is absolutely nothing wrong with healthy competition and "special offers". Over the last 5-10 yrs I have seen a huge rise in the "voucher culture" where clients only want to have a treatment if it is with huge discounts.
The increase in prices of manicures and pedicures generally compared to other service industries is minimal over the last 10yrs where everything has gone up!!
I have been told that my manicure/pedicure prices are high! My retort is always the same. I ask the client how much they pay for a cut and blow dry.(where I am anything between £30-£60). This normally takes about 45 mins with minimal product use or expensive equiptment.
We are trained professionals why have we not moved along with the hairdressing industry? I give a fabulous man/ped always takes me in excess of an hour but why in this industry are most therapists/ nail tech not charging accordingly?!
Sadly I see mani pedis as just bread and butter I tend to promote my more specialist treatments where the financial reward is far greater.

I think the issue is that nearly 100,000 people a year are training in beauty. There just aren't enough jobs. It's unfair and unrealistic to expect that these unemployed or under employed therapists will just give up and go away. Most are too inexperienced to know how to charge properly.
Lets face it, as a top up to benefits, or for a 17 year old with just a mobile phone bill to pay, these button-like weekly earnings are probably better than nothing. Unfortunately it's set a precedent in the industry which damages legitimate businesses trying to pay therapist salaries, as well as make a profit.
At my local college, people can do a 12 week fast track NVQ2 in beauty. In doing so, I'm sorry to say that beauty has kind of lost status.
Now, I fully expect the people who have done one day courses to disagree or try and shout me down, but just be aware that I'm not the one scratching a living on minimum wage.
