I am quite new to nails and am currently practicing (or trying to) like mad for my practical foundation exam on 7th August 2008.

I was just wondering how experienced nail techs feel when they have a client that doesn't have lovely long slender nail beds? This is something that is currently scaring me to death, given that so far I've been quite lucky with my models. I know I need the practice on say, nail biters, ski jump nails etc., if I don't do them I will never know how to, but I am absolutely petrified of producing something horrendous.

I was just wondering what people's experiences were and if it gets any better for people?

Hey hun,

Personally I love a challange, I like transforming what the client pervceives as problem nails into elegant enhancements. It makes your brain work, what blend would look best, what style, shape etc. Saying that, biters are very tricky and the first application I still dont think look brilliant, but if they persevere after the third maintenance I think they are starting to look great. Also, I rarely get anyone with perfect long nail beds haha, I think I'v only had one as a model years ago, and she likes her beautiful long strong natural nails and didnt want to continue with Gel, why would she? :green:

Most of my clients have short/bitten nails ..... I love their faces when the nails are completed and they thank me .... Always up for a challenge x

i love a challenge.
its probably true to say those dodgy nails never look as good as ones where the client has a great set of natural nails to work on, but the improvement is soo noticeable and they are pleased as punch with the results.

Sometimes i forget that we as nailtech look at the nails very diffrent then them. They dont see what we see and are most of the time so very happy with beautifull nails.

I can remember the first set of nails I had put on.

Ive always bitten and picked my nails and the nail the nail tech gave me a discount because two of the nails had tiny tiny bubbles in them but I was chuffed to bits because I had never had white on my nails and i now had ten beautiful long nails.

I think sometimes nail techs are too hard on themselves but i know that I am just as bad and often scream at myself (in my head, so client doesnt realise that I am mad!!) when something doesnt look right!!

I have never had a practice model or client with nice nail beds. Ninety percent have been nail biters. The rest are teensy weensy little nail beds or ski jump nails. Some of the biters have had next to no nail bed at all and a solid lump of skin at the end of their nail where it has never been given the chance to grow.
I love the challenge of deciding what will suit their fingers and then making it happen for them. Nothing can beat the excited look on their faces when they have new lovely nails.
I find it quite funny how they start waving their hands about and talking with their hands.
There's probably a little more work involved in customising forms, tips etc but well worth it in the end.
Cheers
Karen

I love the challenge ......, the only problem I have is allocating the time required when they make an appointment, I try and get them to explain their situation on the phone so I can book out the required time, so I don't run late for my next client.
Nothing more annoying than pleasing one client, but aggravating the next one by running late.
