Do you think salon ranges should advertise in consumer magazines ?

I was looking through one of the hair magazines at work (aimed at clients, sold in newsagents etc) and noticed there are quite a few adverts for professional hair care ranges, GHD, Tigi, Paul Mitchell etc and wondered why it is not very often (if at all) that we see beauty salon ranges for both skin and nails ?

I know it costs a huge amount of money but surely it would benefit the company to, if clients are more aware & buying the products off us then we will be increasing our orders ! I have seen OPI advertised before but can't recall any other salon brands actually having a paid for advert.

So do you think it would be a good to see salon ranges advertised and promoted in consumer mags ?

i think it would be good for the company and us (if we offer the brand) as some people will go out there way to find/try somethink from the magazines so yes i think it would be a good idea

some times when you get tried and tested in mags they may be a salon brand name in there or maybe a celb recomends page but i have never seen a advert in genral

I think it is vital if the consumer is to be fully aware of the choice of brands available. It would certainly help educate the consumer.

Any other geeks have any thoughts on this ?

Maybe if we make enough noise companies might start doing more !!!

I'm sure I've seen OPI and other salon nail brands sold on QVC on the telly before - usually at surprisingly cheap prices too!

IMO when it apperas on tv,and as you so rightly put it sells at cheap prices,it cheapens the brand, and is disloyal to the professional, who is then undercut by the bargaining power of of these shopping channels...

A couple of my clients have told me they saw a Sunday supplement item on Solar Oil by Creative and made a point of telling me.

Mostly when I tell people I am a Creative salon they have never heard of Creative, I think a little more exposure would help for sure.

dermalogica is one of the big ones, its everywhere!!

Im thinking more of paid for adverts in magazines, like Cosmopolitan, Grazia, NW etc

I am quite lucky as I would say less than a handful of my clients have bought products from QVC but having seen products on there has made them aware of the brand.

i think the average consumer doesn't really know whats good because as far as professional products go, there isnt enough 'every day' exposure. Hence the reason people are still stepping foot in NSS places. Because they know no better.

Its only the beauty savvy amoungst them that would know a bit of whats what.

I would LOVE to see more exposure for brands in consumer mags! Where do I sign? Whos ass do I boot? lol x

I dont know if they still do but Guinot used to do loads of 'glossy mag' ads. It did send people into the salon.

The only other that does it is Clarins but then they have the store outlets so I imagine they get a good return on their investment.

But yes I think beauty brands could do more to help the salons who have invested in them...its kind of - left to you to push the product. But tbh a consumer is not that interested in a product they havent heard of - how else can they impress their friends ?(LOL).

St. tropez did do an awful lot to help the salon in the beginning but as we know its bigger than the mere salon now but still is a brand that absolutely everyone knows because of the aggressive and clever PR that was put into the brand.
