How many of you use a drill/electric file & do you use it with all sets or only occasionally- if occassionly when would you feel the need to use it?- im only starting out & was never taught how to use one in my course, & only file by hand (filing & sealing is my weakness)

would you recommend I buy a dill/electric file ?

I do use an efile, not but not all the time. I suffer sometimes with my wrists, so when my wrists feel weak or are aching I tend to use it more. I attended a training course with NSI so know how to use it correctly. I would suggest if you are thinking of using one it really is best to attend a course as you can do no end of damage with incorrect use. I still prefer to finish by hand though.

i use my e-file all the time.
but i would strongly suggest you perfect your hand filing techniques first.
you must keep trying to make the nail as perfect as possible in the application and then consequently you will have less and less filing to do , be it by hand or by e-file.
also when you do progress on to an e file be sure to get training on how to use it correctly as the technique is so different from using a hand file.

I also would not part with my e-file and suggest as above perfect your hand filing techniques first and only then do a certificated e-file course to ensure you are using it correctly.

To quote Greg Salo its not the tools but the fools who use them.

great advice given here and i think angel fingers speaks for a percentage of us nail geeks xx

I dont use and efile but I am not opposed to them at - IN THE RIGHT TRAINED HANDS! LOL

The only reason I probably dont use one is because I only work as a nail tech part time so dont have any probs (touch wood) with RSI.

My advise - certainly get trained in one if you think it would improve your services

best wishes

I use one ALL the time. I would be lost without it! I didn't perfect my hand filing until much later in my nail career. I never found a use for it since I always use my E-File. I agree that you need to work on great application... Sculpt with your brush not with your file ( or E-File in this case). I only use 2 bits a medium grit sanding band and a great roundish-cone shaped bit I found at a wood working store.

I don't use a drill.. Because i don't know how to.. TBH i do not see a need for one myself.. personally.. perhaps when i get more clients i wont feel the same way.. but finishing by hand is one of my favorite things.. as lately i have to do less and less of it!! Its a real boon to the self esteem when you go from filing for days to hardly at all.. ifykwim!

I only use them for cutting out the smile line and cleaning underneath, I'd like to think my application is good enough to never need to use one on the nail surface itself, i would issue a challenge to anyone to finish faster with an efile than a normal file (including fineness of detail) ... you will never get them as refined around the cuticle with an efile ..... When applying correctly and using my brush and acrylic skills to pre-determine the shape of the nail (done it before and won hands down ...pardon the pun) an e-file can take the smile line out faster (and it's a much crisper finish), but as for the surface, it should only need to be buffed (finely honed) to give a great finish.
Here's a vid for cutting out smile lines anyways Nail Zoo Video Page

I would strongly advise you to seek training before you even touch an e file. I had a client come to me who had had her nails done by a friend and they had used an e file. It was a mess as she had filed a hole in her natural nail bed and was very sore. This could happen very easily if you have not had the correct training. Read the tutorials on file control as I think it will really help you if you are having trouble. Hop this helps. x

I don't use an efile, nor do I plan to.
There are a lot of NSS shops around me and UNFORTUNATELY, some clients associate the efile with NSS.
My clients like the fact that I don't use an efile and they've been 'burned' by them before by techs who weren't properly trained.
I have a small business anyway and don't feel the need.

I don't use a drill/efile I have had no training with one so I would never dare to use one.
If I were you I wouldnt buy one until you have completed and passed the course to use it. You can do so much damage with a drill, also I have seen damage done with a normal hand file as well, but its easier to damage with an efile especially if you are not trained.
If you are struggling with filing and sealing I suggest you go and have a 1 to 1 refresher with your trainer.

I have just bought an e file and so far it has been great...less strain on my arms! I feel better with it because my back was starting to give me problems as well :( I have been practicing on myself all the time I can to improve my timings. I use it on low speeds so I have more control and I lightly touch the surface of the nail to smooth it...no need for very high speeds in my opinion. I think I'm falling in love with my e file...it has made it much easier =)

this is what I use my e-file for as well......

I agree. Definately do a course BUT even after you have completed your course you need to use it on your own nails for a while. I did a course then went and did more practice on my own nails - what a mess I made. Every cuticle was cut, kept getting that burning sensation etc etc. Now, I have'nt cut anyone, burnt anyone since then. I am so pleased with myself

Where is the best place to get one from and where do you get the training? do they have courses all over the UK?

I'm a heavy drill user, but I have to admit that Susan is giving the best advice...... for sure hand file will give you a much more signature look, think of machine made vs hand made.

It not the tools but the fools whose use them
Some time it the fools whose make them also..... unfortunately there a bits out there a way too sharp to be use safely.

I just watched the video link above.... the tech uses her / his drill like peeling an apple or somthing.... I use mine like i am holding a pen.... I only take out the smile lines...

Can the more experience techs tell me how they hold theirs...

I had training on my efile.. just want to know the difference...

Also i was taught to start in the middle of the nail..... they started at the side walls..

any tips would be great..
Always looking for better ways to do things..

I'm not sure if any of you have heard of Kenco Beauty Supplies, but they sell a micromoter drill, and my hand piece started making a high pitch squeal and I have no idea why. I've only taken the best care of it, never dropped it and I've only had it for 2 weeks. I don't really know what to do. I dont know if they'll replace it, but I think I want to go with a smaller drill, but I still want the torque/power and quality.

Any suggestions of what I should do?
