Please can I get some girlie advice on engagement rings....

We have decided to buy me a new engagement ring (long story!).

Anyway I'm a size G which is outside most shops normal range so we are going to have one specially made. Having it this way IMO means we can make it unique and special so I have come up with some designs based on our initials C & J put together to make a heart (wish I could show you on here but trust me it works!). The jeweller we met seemed to like my ideas and went off to discuss feasibility etc.... Anyhoo he phoned yesterday and he says its possible but he talked of taking a fairly standard shape and adapting it a bit to incorporate the CJ. I was keen at the time but now when I think about what he said about 'adapting' it i think it sounds like it will look shop bought and that wasn't the plan at all!! I gave him all sorts of pictures and he picked the most simple basically. However if I say yes to that I might get a nice big sparkler on my finger for Xmas but if I mess with the design and get fussy it could be weeks.

Then again on the other hand maybe my idea will date and I won't like it in years to come. The suggested ring style at the moment is platinum and has a central diamond with 4-5 diamonds on each shoulder with the CJ thing as the 'claws' holding the central diamond.

I need to sort my head out do I take what's on offer or get all particular!!

And yes I know its not about the ring but the commitment, love etc, but I've never had any decent jewellery before and probably won't again and I am lucky to have this opportunity....

And God do I love my fiance to bits...

I would go for the more unique option as it is such a special item. I would prefer to wait the few more weeks and have something that is exactly what i wanted.

a lot of goldsmiths use prefabricated components to assemble into bespoke designs such as yours. there will be technical aspects that he must adhere to so that the settings will retain the stones correctly as well as fullfilling the design criteria you have given him.
he was probably refering to this.
the usual way is to pay a deposit to the goldsmith and only pay the balance once you are satisfied with the design and finished product .

Get what you REALLY want. There are lots of places that hand make jewellery, you could go to jewellery making classes and make it yourself if you really can't find what you want!
If you get one of the glossy women's mags there are usually adverts in the back for things like that.

My engagement ring, eternity ring and wedding rings are all custom made - I don't care if anyone thinks I'm above myself. They are the most important pieces of jewellery I will ever own and as such deserve to be as special as the man I married and the commitment I made when I put them on

Soppy moment over, have what you your heart is set on or it will never feel quite right and you'll regret it later. I know this for sure as it took two goes, and twice as much money to get my eternity ring right :o

I used to work in high end Bling for 10 years........

Put it this way.. keep visiting jewellers until u find one who will do the job right for you!, not just pick the most simple sketch......

I am an "I" so again outside display case sizes (I'd never buy display case anyway lol) we had a very unique ring made, and it stretched the jewellers ablitites but he did it!... and it took 8 weeks to finish... that didnt include the 4 weeks to get the diamonds in from Canada (not the usual shapes)

basically

Its worth the wait... find someone who can do it how u want it.. BUT who knows how to addapt it correctly to the ring, ie, built correcty at the structural points as it should be (same as an apex on the nail ;)) but still staying true to your design.... if your uncomfortable about how the jeweller seems with your design... go find another :)

This probably will not be any good for you as an engagement ring but my friend had a beautiful gold wedding band made for her of all her old bits of gold jewellwry all the broken chains, odd earrings, bits she didnt like and rings that had lost stones or didnt fit.It was all melted down to make a large gold wedding band with 3 diamonds in that came from a pair of earrings.I thought it was a brill idea.
