The shop near us has been told to take down their England flag which they'd put up for the football as it was racist.Does this mean people from other countries can't fly their flag either. I see it as being patriotic, whatever your country, getting behind your team, having some fun and enjoying the atmosphere of the world cup. When we went to America their flag is everywhere they are so proud of who they are.Am i wrong, does anyone else see this as racist.I will still be doing England nails though x

It really annoys me when flying the George Cross is deemed racist. If you ask me, it's political correctness gone mad! Surely you can support your country's team and take pride in being English (or Scottish, Welsh, Irish, etc) or British without being racist. After all, I was born and live in England and am happy to be English/British. But it doesn't make me racist! And even though I'm not majorly into football, I still want our team to do well!!!

Also, in my opinion, political correctness gone mad (like not being allowed to fly the English flag because it's supposedly "racist") actually risks people being attracted to far-right political groups, because they end up resenting the fact that they're not allowed to be patriotic on account of the political correctness brigade spoiling their fun all the time (like when they want to support the England football team). Likewise, in cases where immigrants get preferential treatment in terms of benefits, housing, etc, over British citizens.

So... ironically, in my opinion, the best way to combat racism would be to ban political correctness - not making it "racist" to fly the George Cross or the Union Jack, and establishing *proper* equality, where *everyone* gets treated equally irrespective of race, religion, gender, etc, and not artificially favouring minority groups just to satisfy some stupid politically correct ideology.

I agree...political correctness has gone mad. It's ridiculous in the USA, as well. :(

I don't think flying your flag is racist at all, it's a pride thing.

There was a story in the news a while ago about a mountain rescue charity being denied Lottery money because it "wasn't helping enough minority groups"... that's another example of political correctness gone mad! Likewise, if you want any dosh from the Arts Council, you have to tick all their little political correct boxes too.

I wish quangos like that would make their funding decisions on the individual merits of each application, rather than artificially weighted politically correct criteria...

I agree Ruth that this extreme political correctness is having an adverse effect.I am not racist but not being able to "breath" without permission makes me resentful.I wish we could live side by side with the many people who come to this country, work, and make it a better place but stop the benefit system being open to abuse so those who dont want to work won't come .My daughter's landlord is Indian, she couldn't have a better landlord, she has Polish clients etc and none of them would ask her to take down the English flag x

There was a story in the paper the other day about a man who was told by his local council to remove the flags and bunting from the balcony outside his flat because it was " racist and a health and safety risk" - totally ludicrous in my opinion. We are English, living in England and we can't display England flags to support the England team or celebrate the Patron Saint of England!!!!!

Yep... I do hope that the new government get rid of all the politically correct rubbish, just like they're doing with home information packs, ID cards and the Contact Point database...

It's getting to be like that here in the US, also. Christmas vacation is now called winter break, Easter vacation is now called spring break. God forbid, Christianity 'offends' anyone. It's just sickening what has become of this country, in the name of 'political correctness'.

Oh no, i'm hanging mine outside!
To be honest, this rumour went round at the last world cup.
I think some pubs ban the wearing of football shirts all year round and not just for the world cup.
