When a new customer walks in through the door how much time and what assessment do you make when recommending what strength solution to use that best suits your customers skin type.

Do you simply give em what they want irrespective of skin type or do you try and persuade them to have a percentage that you as a professional feel would better suite them.

So guy's what % solution (can we keep brand names out for the sake of this posting please)do you techs recommend for Skin Type I, Skin Type II and Skin Type III.

Have you ever refused to apply a solution strength that simply either wouldn't suit the customer or would possibly result in DHA overload?

I tend to go on the natural hair & skin tone and ask them how they naturally tan in the sun and what occasion they are having the tan for I use sienna so have 8/8.5/10/12 %, I recommend 8 - 8.5 for naturally fair red haired English rose type colouring and not had a complaint yet. 10 % I generally use on warm skin toned people with dark hair, but then again I have a couple of girls who are dark haired but have pink skin tone so I recommend and use the 8.5% which they are very happy with. I only have the 12% in for dancers or Mediterranean skin types. It also depends on the occasion I think you wouldn't to be obviously spray tanned if a bride or for a very formal occasion. Is this right Colin?.

P.S. I would refuse to tan with a solution that I didn't think was right for tone etc after all WE should know what is best I think if you give the right info and know what your talking about clients do listen and go with what your recommendations are.

If someone is very nervous or is talking about a natural tan I go for 8%. Also if they are extremely fair or its their first tan.

If someone wants a colour but not over the top I usually go for 10%

If someone is talking about loving fake tan, they do it all the time, the darker the better or they are of a resonable colour I go 12 or 12.5%

I have personally never refused to do a % on someone, however I have never been in the position where I have felt that they would look silly. I like to think my clients trust me and my opinon.

I think gut instinct is a definate winner when it comes to %'s.

I don't like to think too much about it because you start confusing yourself!

ps. good thread!

I can usually tell by looking at the client what % of solution they would be able to take but sometimes they tell me that although they look quite light at the moment they actually tan really easily in the sun and go brown straight away etc etc...

If someone has light skin and tans but burns first then i'd probably go for 8 or 8.5% solution... I also use this for brides/wedding parties...

Someone who tans easily in the sun I would give either a 10% or 12% depending on how brown they wanted to be, not necessarily brunettes, blondes and redheads too! I normally try to talk them into having the 10% first time just incase they dont like it as there is nothing I can do about it once its sprayed on and developed! This tends to make them think and they usually agree and go for the 10% however, if they insisted on having the 12.5% and they tanned easily in the sun I wouldnt have a problem spraying them with it. I usually ask them how much they want it to notice, just a golden glow or like they have been away somewhere...

I have a regular client who is VERY, VERY white!! first time I sprayed her I wanted to do an 8% but she wanted a 10%, I tried to advise her but se wouldnt have any of it! She looked ok and had it the next few times until a few weeks ago when she insisted on having the 12.5% the same as all the other girls and I advised her against it but she was adamant that she wanted it  I held my hand up and said 'it's up to you but dont complain if you wake up tangoed in the morning' I went ahead and worried about it until the next time I saw her two weeks later. I asked her how it was and she said it was lovely and had the same again.

These girls all work in my local hairdressers and a few days later I went in for a hair cut. They all looked gorgeous! even the really white one! I had used 12.5% on them all and one of the others was a redhead. None of them looked orange, they all looked really natural :green:

I am no longer scared of the 12.5% and it is my second most used after the 10%. I hardly use the 8% anymore and need to get some 16% for the really dark skinned clients that I have!! :green:

So to sum up, I advise them but I will also do what the client wants if they have had a tan before and want to go darker, even if I dont totally agree... I wouldnt refuse to spray them I'd just warn them what may happen.

I do actually let me clients choose which % they want! If they ask me my opinion then im more than happy to say what i think but i do let them choose as it is their treatment if they want to be very dark i just do what they tell me.

what even if you think they will look like an oompa loompa afterwards?

what about the clients who are new to spray tanning and dont have a clue? you must help them decide surely?

As soon as someone walks through my door I know what percentage they need but with my clients most of them want darker than I would recommend. I usually persuade them to go for the % I recommend but they usually end up going one up from that without any problems.

I have one lady who really should only be taking an 8% but looks fab with a 12%, no orange etc.

I myself shouldn't really have darker than 10% but would have had 16%tantrick max with no problems.

Well yes but when they say on i want to be really dark i say are you very sure as you may look orange if you do go so dark they say thats how i want to be then i say ok well if thats what you want.

When they are new and they havent an idea of what colour i take a look at them and suggest the best colour that i think but if someone is so determined to be so dark i cant exactly say no you cant as its them that are paying for the treatment so they can have it the way they want, but i do always 'warn them' if they want to go too dark

TBH I found that most people around here thought the darker the better but many salons "tangoed them" using cheap solutions .....I found a happy medium for those people.. with a 12% solution.
For first timers and paler clients I would advise to go lighter...but do they listen??:)

I use 8% as my default solution especially at this time of year but I usually guage it by how they tan in the sun. I only have one client that I use 12% on, everyone else is either 8% or 10%, primarily the 8% if I'm honest! I however have used a 5%, 8% and 10% on myself and liked them all! I really want a 6% though as I find it a bit of a shock to my system the 8% and the 5% not quite dark enough! Picky picky me! Maybe I'll get booster drops and make my own flavours! (mwahahahaha - that was my best mad scientist in case anyone was wondering!:smack:)

I give a mini consultation on the phone when booking in tans so have an idea then I go by natural colouring and further consultation. I always have 3 set up 9%, 12% and dont know the third but its a well known plant based tan that has a rhyming name and that imho is waay too dark for irish skins! For tan virgins its usually 9% and tanorexics 12% I'm quite happy with 12% as I believe I use a good solution and am excellent at my technique, so I dont worry about clients even if they ask for it and its not what I'd suggest. As for the 3rd bottle I very rarely use but its there if they want it. I also have drops that I have only used on 3 ladies going to a fancy dress as the supremes :lol:

Don't talk of some of my clients that way:lol::lol::lol:

yey thanks for all your replies guy's

Maybe a secondary question if you don't mind.

So your customer that normally has say a 10% comes in and your out of the stuff...all you have is say a 8% and a 12%.
What do you do
1) do you say sorry no can do missus all I have is 8% or12% which one should we splodge all over you

OR

2) do you start your own lab and mix the 8% wit the 12% to make your very own 10% for splodging all over your customer

now tell the truth...no one is watching :lol:

I'd mix and i know you shouldn't now, but didn't know i shouldn't when i did and it was ok :)

i'd either mix or tell them i'll do the 12 and wash it off earlier than normal, say after 4 or 5 hours :green: I wouldnt tell them I cant do it.. lol

Collin i think you have an evil motive with these questions :lol:

I would ask the client first if they would change their colour if they say no i would mix it...:green:

I'd mix and i know you shouldn't now, but didn't know i shouldn't when i did and it was ok :)

As a manufacturer we would all mostly say don't do it...buy hey if it works then why not

~~I would like to think that they would have the 12% and shower off a little earlier as Sherrie says.

Lol none

Its interesting to learn how confident you guy's are at what you do...to be able to have the confidence to mix solution is pretty good

Now i have booster drops which saves the hassle, but my booster drops are for Celebrity Secrets. So, if someone came in wanting a darker, let's say Sienna X solution mmmmmmmmmmm........
Now would i add my Celebrity Secrets booster drops to it or would i try and persuade them to use another solution?
Can you use booster drops from one solution and put in in another solution? I would think you could but i've never tried.
Where's my nephew when i need him to be a guinea pig!!
