any ideas what could help ??

xx

I went through a period like this and every time a person called to book in for nails I dreaded it.
I don't know exactly what happened but I seemed to get over the dread and now dontt mind doing them so much, but like you I offer eyelash extensions and spray tanning and would rather do these instead.
I think also, as there are so many people who can create AMAZING nails I sometimes feel mine don't look as good in comparison, but no one complains so I must be doing something right :)
I would suggest maybe doing a one-to-one with a trainer or playing about a bit to get your love for nails back.

Maybe you have found your niche in lash extensions and tanning and nails are just not for you.

Stick to what you do best, I say, and be an expert at it. Not many are experts at all things. If you don't do something particularly well and always find your efforts fall short of your expectations the give it up. If it ain't fun then don't do it.

This is a great bit of advice from geeg. I did a waxing course a while ago and then added I to my list of treatments and had some customers as a result.
But, I just didnt enjoy it and HATED it when someone called for an appointment. SO......I did exactly as geeg said and I gave it up-it leaves me with more time to concentrate on what im good at and stopped me fretting about the thing I hated.

i love the look of nails on everyone.. i love looking at them but i think i might stop doing them if i dont put my heart and soul into it then they wont be the way i want them to be :(

thanks for the advice girls xxxx

Well it sounds to me like you are frustrated because your nail skills are behind where you want to be. You have two choices really, give up nails or work harder to reach the level you want.

Come-on - is spray tanning and lash extensions really satisfying your creativity! :D

Sounds to me like you should book yourself on a good nail art class - that's not easy in the UK, but perhaps try a one-on-one with Kirsty Meakin who is world class. If that doesn't fire up your enthusiasm and creative juices - then you will know that nails are not for you.

Well no one is going to put their heart and soul into something they say they hate and dread doing are they? Of course not.

I am a good example ... I have trained in individual eyelash extensions with the best Nouveau lash .. I specifically did this to teach it to those here in Spain who want to go into it. I can do it well and competently with long lasting results but is my heart in it?? No. Does doing it satisfy me artistically? No. Am I in love with it?? NO. Will I offer it as a service to clients ?? No .. it bores me to tears and spray tanning would be even more dire for me, despite the fact that I am a pretty expert airbrusher. For me spray tanning would be like painting the back yard fence with creosote and just about as fullfilling!!! So I'll stick to what I find fullfilling and satisfying and what I am known for doing. I have trained some pretty good lashers though and some damned good air-brushers. lol

I'm with Bob on that one! I do love all things nails, but I am limited in what I can do because of a disability. I was seeing all these beautiful nails on the web and becoming frustrated with my own skills. I do not have the availability of a nail art class or even a one on one to me in my rural area, but I practice! Practice, practice, practice! I am still not up to some of the stuff that I see, but I am a lot happier with what I can do now. And being able to get my own imagination out onto a nail is very fulfilling!

I used to do nails and I got bored with them too, then I started spray tanning, I loved it so I decided after much soul searching to drop the nails completely and just do the tanning. I have never looked back, I have never missed it and I have never regretted it! I love tanning :D

thank you all for your comments.. i love nails i love looking at them and everything but i think its just a phase am going through just now.. i am going to the beauty show in edinburgh on sunday so hopefully i will pick up on a few things then and love them again lol.. i dont dread doing them yet i just wish i could do so much more, most of my clients just like plain and simple anyway so maybe i am just pushing my self to do something that i dont really need to be honest..

i think i will invest in getting one of those hands to practise on and then maybe see what i can do then before i decide to drop it..

If you are talking about nail art then you are so right!! The call for it is so small in your business that I'd forget it apart from the simple stuff. Many of us have built remarkable business without ever offering more than the odd simple decoration ... 3D?? Embedded flowers?? all that glitter stuff??? Hardly anyone wants it and those that do generally will not pay you the proper amount to do it so many 'give' the service away.

Just went on to someones website yesterday where she was charging 150.00 for complicated nail art designs ... good for her for charging correctly, but how many do you think take her up on it???

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that a set of nails does take quite a bit longer than spray-tan and lashes?
Just a thought.
I love doing nail art and is very fortunate to have some friends that are so into it, they usually only get a plain french once a year. They are very good at coming with the ideas, and I'm pretty good at making it work. But I am not good at coming up with ideas myself. What I do is looking at pictures in magazines and so, and then trying to copy. I always make a display tip (pop-it) and then show it to the girls, and then we might come up with a variation = new design... and then I make a display tip of that too...
Anyway - I think a nail-art class could be a good thing - it might get you inspired. I started with making glitter tips instead of white, use a light color, any pastel, they usually looks very descreet.

Glitter tips are one thing and not something I class as nail art when I talk about nail art.

How much do you charge extra for these consultations where you come up with a design and then execute it and the making of the PopIt with the art .. my guess is nothing? Which is exactly my point.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but most glitter tips and designs for tips can be done faster, easier and cheaper with polish and look just as good and wear very well for 3 weeks when most clients will want a CHANGE. It's easy and cheap to change polish ... not so acrylic and glitter.

Most techs I've TALKED TO do not charge enough for removing the glitter tips and replacing again with something different. (YOU may of course be the exception) I have made somewhat of a study of this and my findings are not very many techs are charging what they should be charging and if they did would not get the business ................. techs have been very honest with me when telling me they know THEY ARE NOT CHARGING ENOUGH.
MANY ARE NOW STARTING TO GET SMART AND ARE USING POLISH.

Gigi is so right here as always, but one thing I hate to do, is nailart with polish LOL, so I use acrylic paints, they cost me even less than polish, and with a topcoat last as long as polish, and mixing my colors makes it easy to find the perfect match for the client.

And if I use acrylic colors etc. then I use very very little, building a clear nail first, so I won't have to remove the whole nail next time... usually they have a rebalance without a color change, but just a new design on, but I charge the same, so it adds up in the end...

Sorry, I did not make myself clear. I did not mean to suggest to paint designs with polish (acrylc paint is MUCH easier) I was specifically talking about doing different French Tips with polish! So sorry to confuse.

Ohh misunderstood then:o, yes you are right about that too and I actually wis I had done this from the beginning. It's so much easier, might actually put up my prices for the permanent glitters and offer polish for the price I have now...

Oh well I'll have my price rise in a few months and will do this...

See for me, it is tricky. My passion is nails - I long to get to a stage where I can create a perfect, natural looking nails. I am slowly getting there with my course ( I am doing EN acrylic, matinenance and nail art ). I get told by people who are both professional techs and regular wearers of acrylics that the nails I produce are of a standard that is on par with salons local to me, if not slightly better because I have taken the time to study both here, via books and the internet.

My own nails are a different matter with art though - I LOVE to have a different design on each finger, I love to experiment with colours, effects, glitters etc. Do I feel that art will ever be enough to earn me a living in the industry? Not a chance! A full set on my own nails with lots of funky stuff on takes me in excess of 2 hours. A normal set takes me less and finding people who are willing to pay for my time and products to create a truly scrummy set of "different" nails is not something I feel I could do here. This leaves me frustrated and occasionally feeling like the OP but being able to take someone who thinks good nails consist of a white tip, wrongly placed on the nail with clear slapped over the top and the odd rhinestone and showing them that they can have so much more - extended nail beds, natural looking nails done by a person who actually cares more about the health of thier natural nails and the finished look rather than the money - that is enough for me :)
