Hi there,

Can anyone offer me some advice please!
I'm often finding that after doing freehand nail art, when I try to seal it with OPI top coat it smudges some of the art. Im using nail art pens and dont get why its doing this! I leave the design to dry first but it still sometimes happens..

Ive seen 'nail art sealers' for sale at the wholesalers - but are these just another version of top coat but with a different name so you spend more money! Or are they what you really should use instead of a normal top coat? Could this be my prob?

I personally don't like opi sealer. I use sech vite top coat on all my designs. except when I do a french. Then I use a uv to coat.
Sech is one of the most used top coats on the market. I like it because it does'nt scratch and get dull. If your design work is dry apply it, and then I use drip dry from opi. dries in 5 mins.

I usually prefer to do my nail art using brushes and water based acrylic paint.

The paint is cheaper.
It dries MUCH faster.
Easier to work with, than with polish.
And easy to top-coat without smudging.

I'm personally not a big fan of striper/nail art pens.

I prefer these brushes

if you are doing everything you say, it is the top coat that is too harsh, and is dragging your design, no matter how long you leave the paint to dry.
nail art sealers are not just another top coat they are a gentle top coat, not fast drying because that could also crack your design.....you seal with a nail art sealer then apply a quick drying or shiny top coat if you want to.

When applying any top coat after nail art, you must make sure you have a good amount of it on your brush, so you don't drag the design and make it smudge.

Top coats and sealers are a little more heavier sometimes, so you need to apply it well and not too thin or it will drag your design.

I personally prefer using water based paints for nail art as V Hunter says as it dries quicker, you can also remove it with water if you make a mistake and it is so much cheaper to buy.

I agree with Talented Talons & Victoria on this too.

What is happening is, when you place your brush with the top coat onto your design (which is also a polish base) the top coat reactivates the polish based nail art design and drags it along with your brush.

If you use quicker strokes and have more top coat on your brush, you will find this happens less.

It's blooming annoying though isn't it!:irked:

hi, thanks for the tips! I'll definately give it a go..

Thanks again

Ugh, I HATE it when this happens. You spend ages on a design, then ruin it by re-wetting to polish with top coat and streak it. Aagh.

I just did a hello kitty one and used glaze and go over it and didn't smudge at all. Am going to have to find a good sealer though.
Cant afford to use this all the time!

p.s. if you look at my links, it has happened to most of my nails.

I've had that happen several times with free hand nail art! I use Out the Door top coat and it's the best top coat I've ever used and it dries quickly I wait about 5 to 7 minutes before top coating the nail art when it's free hand and wrap the clients legs with hot towels as like a bonus service so they don't feel like I'm ignoring them while it drys ...
