I did a set of gel nails, white tipped with uv gel and final coat with UV top coat. My client went abroad for a week and before returning home took her nails "off" because they went "STICKY"!!! After cringing firstly in the fact she took her own enhancements off has anybody heard of the top coat melting!!! - Seems very odd

Personally I wouldn't trust what clients say on something like this. You don't know where her hands have been, in what or what they were doing. She could be BSing you and picked them off...

unless you could see them at the time... there ain't no saying how...

It seems odd to you (the professional) and it seems odd to me (also a professional... I think:)). Do another set and monitor her!!

HTH's!

yes, there is something in sun protection cream that has this effect on some topcoats.

I have, the heat from the sun makes it go tacky, but it shouldn't have affected the gel itself, all she needed to do was keep topping up the topcoat, like I do when on holiday. That is an extra sale for you sell them topcoats before they go on holiday.

Yes, that happens with the top coat with a blue shine in it. When the top coat comes in contact with the sun it melts the topcoat away. You can choose to use a gel finish. Or one of the ez flow topcoats called never yellow sealer.

The cream or spray insect repellant sometimes seems to melt acryrlic nails

Hmmmm, I agree with all what you've said. I dont believe for a moment that the gel itself went sticky or went "off" as theres nothing on the planet that removes uv gel apart from buffing it off - stays on forever dosnt it! I will advise her to take a top coat with her next time (and other clients) as I dont want to change my brand as it suits me and always behaves itself.

I do note Angel Fingers comments on suncream and hopefully by client topping up her top coat this should solve the prob.

BUT ..... Why dont mine go sticky when Im on holiday ??????

I can guarantee I will have a horrible dream tonight of some freaky nails melting into a sun lounger

Thanks Girls x

because you probably use a different brand of suncream that has different ingredients.

if i remember correctly its an ingredient that repels insects. it has been discussed before on here but ages ago, a search might come up with an old thread.

This happend to me a couple of weeks ago when I was applying an insect repellent to my sons legs.

The surface of my nails became sticky, which did come as a bit of a shock, but obviously I could fix it myself - so it wasn't a problem..... and I learned something new - Bonus!

I was wearing a soak off gel at the time - not sure if that makes any difference?

Deet is the culprit! Happened to me, lol!

Deet is also known as Diethyl Toluamide.
I have checked the bottle and the product that I was using (Autan spray) doesn't contain any Deet - so there must be another culprit to add to the list!.... I will investigate (and avoid Deet!)

Wow, I am learning loads! Deet is also called N,N-Diethyl-3-Methylbenzamide........ which also isn't listed on my bottle.

Deet was origionally developed as a plastic softener which will erode everything from nylon to rubber!

Anyway, I am still looking for which ingredient is my culprit...

Ive found all this info very interesting as before i became a nail tech i used to have gel nails when i went away.
I remember one time my nails went very sticky and if you rubbed the top of them it was almost like rubbing away the sticky backing of a plaster! and if you scraped them you could scrape loads of layers away lol

When i mentioned this to the nail tech at the time she frowned upon me and said she didnt believe me and it was probably me that wasnt looking after them

Ive always wondered what went wrong and now i know :green: THANKYOU:hug:

I often wonder if acetate could be the culprit. Not knowing enough about organic chemistry I don't know if it is likely....maybe someone more in the know might be able to shed some light!

Iv never come across this, on myself or any clients, it's very interesting, something else I'll have to put on my after care list!!

Deet also removed the coating on my mum's glasses (you know the thing you pay for that reflects glare and the like.......). Lethal stuff!!
