Im coming to the end of my NVQ2 Beauty Therapy course and some of the other girls have had their interviews for level 3.
My friend told me that the tutor who interviewed her said that level 2 is just a pathway to level 3 and that you cant get a salon job, unless you do level 3??? (something to do with insurance)
That can't be right SURLEY!!! So I will have spent a year for what? studying A/P and loads of homework and practical assessments for nothing???!!!
Can someone shed some light on this? Thanks Geeks

well i have done one off day courses and lv2 nails and have got insurance just employers might prefer higher qualifications????

same here, i have done some day/few day courses and i'm insured and about to start working friday/saturday in a salon.

I havent done level 3 sweet
I only did level 3 massage and waxing level 2 I had company training for facials
I have my own salon but to me level 3 is all about body electrics and stuff
I think main essentials is waxing, facials, manicure and pedicure
body electrics is specialist stuff and the salon you work in needs to invest in vast amounts of money for the machines.
Good luck in your level 3 if you decide to do it

Hi
Thats not right - I employed girls trained to NVQ II level and I had no problem with insurance whatsoever.

The general approach they took was that if they wanted to do electrics etc, massage blah blah they would attend an intensive short course (1 day in some cases) to gain that qualification rather than a whole year.

Tbh I don't even know if that many salons do epilation any more - its more likely to be laser.

In addition, those girls that do attend NVQ 3 either wish they never started it or end up jacking the course before its finished - hth :)

HI

When i am interviewing i do prefer a Level 3, but i wouldn't discount a Level 2 student. In my area if they don't have Level 3 that means they have no massage or epilation training, and some of the time no nail training either.

You will still get insurance with Level 2 though.

I wouldn't entertain taking on a therapist who had only done 1 day courses, thats my personal opinion. I believe there is a lot to learn and you most definitely cannot learn it in 1 day.

No offense intended to anyone who has done 1 day courses
JMHO

You can certainly work as a beauty therapist with just the level 2 BUT most salons do prefer level 3 as this includes massage, epilation, electricial facials (eg caci) etc.

Also some skincare ranges require the therapists to be nvq 3 trained.

If you want to be employed in a salon then you really should do the level 3. I would imagine that most employers want the most qualified employee they can get and would more than likely choose someone with a level 3 over 2.

I tend to disagree with the concept that one day courses aren't sufficient enough - even as an employer I've come across some real gems as staff who have put themselves on short courses.

I've been on several one-day courses, learnt more at these than my local college and have done very well and flourished as a result.

Most nail courses are only One day courses, yet many people go on to become fantastic nail technicians after.

It really is down to the individual on how much they apply themselves, how much they practice what they have learnt and how they want to develop their skills further to aspire to become the top of their game.:)

I'm doing a number of one day courses to obtain my NVQ 2 & 3. I get a diploma after the one day course (4 for Epilation and 2 for Massage, 3 for Facial & Body Electrics). I don't get the NVQ though until I do everything else e.g. case studies and assignments.

The salon that I'm taking over at the moment has a therapist who's only Level 2. So it's not unheard of that they get employed. Good to have therapists providing a range of treatments IMO.

I totally agree with this. Several of the girls on my course have been job hunting and all but one have been told to try again once they have passed their level 3.

To be a Guild Member, and therefore gain insurance, we require a minimum of NVQ Level 2. We can insure you without level 3, so I doubt it is due to insurance.

i have trained level 2 tried to get a job in my local area and a little outside and was tols really i would need level 3 after doing my level 3 pathways then started to open.

But on the other hand my friend has a better job than me and has training with an excellent product range in an award winning day spa and has no level 3!!:)
