I had a client today who was about 17 years old and had 4 warts on separate fingers. I advised her to see her GP and they had told her that they will just go away on their own accord, is this correct??
She begged me to do a set of nails and I ended up strapping the fingers with tech tape. I sterilised my equipment and threw my files away. I also wore gloves. In actual fact I sterilised the whole place, me included.
Am I in trouble for doing this?
Put me in an awkward position tbh.
What I wanted to say was "no I'm sorry but I can't do your nails until the warts have all gone." But I caved in because I'm a soft touch.
Shout at me now if need be:cry:

hiya, i dont do acrylics or extensions myself, but if i was doing a manicure and my client had 4 warts on seperate fingers i wouldnt do it, purely because at college i was taught that i can only do it if they have one single wart which can be covered with a plaster but i think if it is more than one it is too many and they would need to wait otherwise there is just too much chance of contamination, but im not gonna shout at u cos its ur choice and i know that clients can put u in really really awkward situations and i would prob find it really hard to say no! but at least u have told her to go to the gp and hopefully she will take your advice and next time she comes to u the warts will be gone!! xx :green:

Warts, Varruccas and corns don't seem to be treated nowadays, patients are just told they will go away on their own over a course of months, I know because I was at a Podiatrists talk to patients and that is what they say happens.

Joan

As long as they are covered there is no reason why treatment cannot be carried out.It dosn't matter if it's one or twenty, cover them up and there's no problem?

Yes don't get me wrong, I have learnt all I was taught but now I am worried about it, regardless of the cautions I took, if I got a wart I would be mortified.
I'm still being TOO NICE to my clients and have been working on not being too nice but will the tech tape and gloves provide adequate protection?
I have used so many of my Mundo products I may have to re-stock.
My point is that I just should have said NO but I know for a fact that the other techs nearby would have turned a blind eye and did them anyway.

Corns are not contagious so it dosn't matter if someone has these. They cannot go on their own accord and no podiatrist would have said they could. They are caused by build up of hard skin and can be removed by a callus treatment and pumice stone, or if very bad by a podiatrist,I know as I get them and have them treated every so often by a podiatrist.HTH:)

This is an interestting one Judy - my natural instinct would be to say no - but if everything was covered/sanitized etc - then maybe it would be ok.

Little proff had a verruca (OMG I hate that word lol) on the bottom of his big toe - went swimming each week (I covered it) but at home he walked around in his bare feet and as many of you know I have a large family and no one ended up with one. I used the Wartner freezing stuff and after 2 applications it had gone.

It maybe that to err on the side of caution is best by either not doing the client at all OR like you did ensure that everything has been covered/sanitized/gloves etc.

Not sure I have helped but will look forward to the replies you receive xxx

hi judy i can confirm for you that warts do go on their own eventually.
my son hands were covered in them at least 10 spread about even between his fingers. I took him to the specialist at my local hospital and they did advise me that they could burn them off but because of where they were it would hurt and they said they will go of their own accord , 6 weeks later they were gone one by one.
The consultant said that warts have a life span and it varies how long it takes for them to go, be months or years.

I was taught at college though that warts contraindicate any treatment as the tutor said they were contagious, but no-one in my family caught them i was also told not to let him touch down there also because they spread x hth's x

I did a weekly mani on a client for years who always had warts on her fingers......I've never caught anything.....as long as you don't make them( warts) bleed and wash your hands before and after service I see no reason why you can't perform service.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear, what I should have said is that they don't treat them unless exceptionally bad, they do advise as you say. It was late when I posted and my brain was not fully in gear.

I know what I meant to say but it didn't come out right.

No problem Joan.I get like that too
Mine do get bad and I have to have this acid stuff on a stick put on my corns,Really hurt last time, couldn't put my foot down for about 3 days.It was really deep.So yes it was bad.

My daughter had warts,as a young girl all down the one side of her torso and inside the same arm.Doctor said he could freeze them off but better to let them go of their own accord.

They cleared up on their own and none of us caught them.

I really think,as long as warts covered, all sterilizing/disinfecting has taken place it's fine to carry out treatment.

I had a lady once in for a back, neck shoulder massage. Her back had about 8 warts on.Client said she had had them for years and nobody in her family had caught them from her.

I just taped over them and got on with massage. Each to their own.If you're happy doing it and carry out correct sanitising and protection against cross infection,I personally dont see a problem.JMHO:)

I will be interested to hear other peeps opinions on this thread. Yes it is correct that warts and veruccas can just disappear overnight literally. My daughter had several monsters on her feet. Here today and gone tomorrow! I have been battling a massive verucca on my toe for years and it's just got bigger and bigger. I've ended up going to a chiropodist as a result.

However, When I trained as a nail tech we were taught to stay well away from warts and veruccas. Can you just tape them up? I'm confused now.

Just had my nose in the text books, warts are a contra action as opposed to a contraindication ,there for service can be carried and as long as proper measures are taken to prevent cross contamination ...... so it seems it's all good Judy x Hth x

Verruca's or verruca vulgaris are warts caused by a viral infection, wich is why they are so contagious x

I thought it was an untreatable condition but you had to ask GP for permission if you are unsure. Warts are a contagious viral infection am I right?
I just don't want to catch one and if I get another client like this I want to know exactly what I should say and do.

I can't paste the link for some reason...... nailfreak06 did a thread on contraindications on wich mum explains about warts hth x

I had a wart on my finger and went to the doctor, who told me that it would clear up on its own, but i had,had this wart for over a year and was due to start mani/pedi in college and wanted it gone by then, so i brought wartner freeze and it finally went after the 3rd application, which luckly enough was about a week before i started college, also noone in my family caught it off me.

In college we are also taught not to treat warts unless there covered with a corn plaster.

i was taught to cover with a plaster too. I used to have warts on my hands as a child and my son had a big one on his knee recently that i treated with wartner, that also took about 3 applications to get rid of it!

I dont know if they are contagious or not but no-one in the family has caught them off my son.

I dont think it would freak me out if someone came to me with warts, i'd just cover them and get on with it without making a big deal of it to the client. I think gloves etc is a little OTT personally. I would be mortified if I went for a set of nails and was treated like a leper! JMO.

there's a bit in Scratch (October) about using nail polish to get rid of them!

I had a client recently who had a wart, when she arrived it was covered up with Duck Tape, or is it duct tape!! You know the Silver tape that you would buy from a DIY store. She has had problems with warts for years and the doctor had told her that if she keeps them completely covered for 6 days they will die! Apparently as they will get no air and no light it will kill them.

It worked too xx
