Hi. I had a girl in today for a wax...and was enquiring about her hair and make up. She was quoted by us £20 for a make up trial, and she asked if I could price up her hair and make up for the day, there and then. I said I'd need some time to tot it up and think about it etc, she gave me the impression, in a nice way, that she was expecting some form of discount if she booked it al with us.

So heres the thing, usually I charge £40 an hour for any out of hours service, which, to be honest, is cheap I think. I could get that in an hour working in the salon, so I think that is it a good price as I am having to leave the salon etc. I charge £40 an hour, from leaving the salon to getting back, so for some people this works out well, and for other who live furhter away it doesn't. However its the best for me so thats why I do it.

She wants 4 adult make ups done, and two children (one of which is 14 so I would class this as an adult) and the 6 hairs done. Its also on a Sunday.

So, because me and my BT would need to go, it comes to £80 an hour. I worked it out, and with each of us allowing 45 mins per client (I reckon bride will take longer but children less time) it takes it to 9 hours altogether. It will also take around 30 mins to get there, so adds up to ten hours, which is £400.

Is this reasonable? I think cos its a Sunday, I've also explained to her my rate etc, and its not all going to me!! I need to pay my BT from this as well as petrol. product costs etc.

I've never done hair and make up on someone who isn't a client so I'm just a bit...confused.

The only thing I could think of to take money off would be not to charge her for the hours travel. But I also think £400 is fairly reasonable for hair and make up!!! Help pleeeease. :) xxx

Hi - I know what you're saying - I have had several wedding makeup calls/emails and i am finding charging rather difficult too : (

I have looked on a few other places websites and i think that I will charge £60 for trial and £35 for bridesmaids/mother of brides trials as they are all different and will need different makeup - On the day I am charging per hour and this is about £45 an hour - I am telling them how much time i recommend but if they go with less time they may well come unstuck. I will charge by the hour regardless.Travelling too i will charge for if this is more than 10 miles from me and it is off site so you need to cover those costs........I think your price is fine..Lisa

I think that the trial should cost more than the actual day, as it should in theory take longer and you could use more product etc...but hey ho thats off the topic.

Thanks for your advice. :) xxx

I think your quote sounds fine ,dont forget to take a hefty deposit though when she books.

Thanks Babs.

I will definitely be taking a deposit, with long standing clients I usually word it as "one less thing to worry about on the day" and they tend to pay me in advance, because there are no trust issues!!

However, I am worried this girl is looking for a lot off the price! I just need to feel confident in what I'm charging, and I'm not sure I do...

I normally charge £65/60 per client for make up trial and make up only at my salon on the day

For the amount you are doing £400 sounds a good deal.

One tip tho break it down into Make up only 1 at £70 includes trial
2 at £65
3 at £62.50

Make up and hair 1 at £95
2 at £92.50

etc etc

when you break it down like this it doesn't seem like a big £400 number if you know what I mean

I just priced it up to be 450, not including any trial sessions which would be paid separatly.I would say 50% deposit secures you to be out of the salon that day. The balance to be paid cash on the day.

sorry forgot to add 50% non refundable at trial balance payable 7 days before etc

always put it in writing to avoid confusion timing too

if you want a copy of my quotation sheet just yell

When she initially asked, she just said it would be at her hotel, then I sadi it would be £40 an hour, from the point of leaving the salon, to returning again.

Then she added she wanted her hair done too... then upon further probing, revealed the hotel is around 30-40 mins away, and then after she had told me everyone who was getting treatments done, she told me it was a Sunday. She wanted a price then and there.

What I'll do is make up an invoice type sheet, explaining what the charge is per hour, and how that breaks down with regards to who is getting what, and what charge it all is.

I just think she is expecting some huge bargain!!!

What??? Why would she expect a bargain?? Are you her Aunty or something?

If she is gonna be tight Kim, leave well alone, as chances are she will be a complete pain, and not want to pay. Not worth the ag.

she said something along the lines of "you can take something off it"...which makes me think she wants some form of "deal" out of it. Now wish I'd told her the call out charge was £80 an hour, and then said, heres a deal, I'll do it for £60 lol.

Just sometimes people don't get that its not all going into my pocket!!! She didn't seem to understand that I needed to talk to my BT about whether she was willing to work early Sunday morning or not!

Anyway, will get my professional typing head on, she's in next Friday for a lash tint and perm so will give her the quote then. :D

Asking for a discount? cheeky cow.

Sunday morning is premium priced stuff. Really, don't discount.

i won't. ill pass on your number if she has anything to say about it. :D

No probs. heh heh

hi kimi that sounds good for the hair and make up for 6 people...
ive been looking at qoutes for my wedding to get a rough price and i got qouted around 350 mark for 4 people.
plus if i wanted it done on a sunday i would expect to pay more anyway for someone to come to me...
i would be happy to pay that if it was me as its very reasonable...!

:D

Hi - Can i have a copy of you quotation sheet please as i need help with this. ta

"you can take something off it" that made me so angry when i read it - she obviously mistook you for a charity
people like that make me sick, they assume you're going to be so grateful for their business that you're going to work and use your products on them for next to nothing
i wonder if she asked her wedding venue if they could take something off because shed booked the venue, food and drink, i dont suppose so and nor would they give it to her had she asked!
stick with your price structure, after all you're doing HER a favour - bet she'd be hard pushed to find a mua and hairdresser to do the whole bridal party at such short notice and on a sunday to boot
this has happened to me cpl times, i politely refused saying that i was trying to run a business and this was my going rate .. they both rang off with the huff and surprise surprise called back a week or so later to try and book me for their trials .. i was able to do one, but not the other as i had taken another booking for another wedding in between time
sorry for my little rant, just makes me mad !

as my only day off i would want megabucks to be working a sunday!!
especially something that will take up most of the day!!!
do NOT discount. (why should you) let her get quotes of others and she'll see your actually doing her a favour! not everyone will come out on a sunday xx

Well, I've priced it up at £410 for the day, I think she may cause a stink but what I'm going to say is she is welcome to get other quotes, and she can come back to me if she wants to.

TBH I am now thinking £40 an hour is cheap for a Sunday. That would be my charge for a Saturday or any other day out of the salon. In hindsight it should prob be closer to £60 but we'll just see what happens. At the end of the day she won't get anyone of similar quality to me (not being bigheaded) for a cheaper price. End of. LOL
