This may sound like a really dumb question but you know me - the only dumb questions are the ones you don't ask LOL.

I have never really liked using toner as I feel that in order to have good skin you need to keep it moisturised and toner to me seems to do the opposite.

I will use say a moisturising or exfoliating facial wash then I use facial oil and then my moisturiser.

Can you please tell me the benefits of using toner.

Depends on who you ask I am afraid, some companies swear you need toner others say you don't.

at college we are taught that it closes the pores after cleansing as well as a "double insurance" to remove grime and make up.

It should only dry your skin if there is alchohol present . I wouldnt use any like this as my skin tends to be dry I have a routine like your own creamy facial wash, facial oil and moisturiser in the morning (i tend to use spray toner to set my make up ) At hight I cleanse tone and moisturise.

Hope this helps

I am a consultant for Nutrimetics and they're "sales pitch" for toner is that when you wash your fash the PH has been changed, the toner will bring the PH level back to normal and prepare the face for moisturizer. I have no scientific facts to back this up put this is what I was told. Some have major amounts of alcohol but there are some out there that do not Nutrtimetics being one them.

I hope this helps

If you have a tendancy for dry, dehydrated skin (and mature) use a floral extract e.g. rosewater, orangewater and camomile. They don't dry the skin as there isn't any/ much alcohol!

Toning is so you ensure you have removed all trace of cleasing products, mask as well as helping "close" the pores

Some companys where I have bought from say you need to use a toner. At college they say to use a toner to a) remove excess cleanser and b) close the pores. The authors of the beautybible (beautybible.com) say that there is no need to use toner. Can I ask what brand your using (in your post you say you cleanse, oil, moisturise) sounds like decleor.

Hi

I use dermalogica and they teach you that your cleanser should do its job and there should be no need for anything else. As the majority of their cleansers are rinse off the toner they do is a spray and its to correct the skins ph after water

multi-active toner

Spritz on critical hydration with this refreshing blend of skin-repairing Aloe, moisture-binding humectants plus soothing Lavender, Balm Mint and Arnica. Contains no artificial fragrance or color. Professional recommendation advised.

Toner has a couple of jobs:

it tightens/closes pores when they may have been opened during cleansing/from steaming
It removes cleanser
It removes anything that the cleanser may not have removed e.g. excess oil, pollution, grime etc.

Hope this helps.

I use this as part of my facial routine and on clients.

How about witch hazel for the more mature skin,,,,is that OK?

Good splash of cold water for me !!!....lol x

NailStyle = Good splash of cold water for me !!!

I was taught this at college. If you splash cold water on your face after cleansing it is meant to refresh you and close your pores, or so I was told, and its cheaper than toner!!!!!!!

Water for me to.!

I was using Decleor but I wanted something more prescriptive and towards anti-ageing. I have recently been using Environ moisturiser and an Olay anti ageing cleanser.

I am looking to start using Nimue as a "consumer" rather than therapist so that was why I was asking. I want to use products that are designed to work together rather than a bit from here, there and everywhere.

I love the Decleor Neroli Oil. I didn't like the Environ facial cleanser so that is why I mix and match LOL.

I tried a sample of Nimue and really liked it - I have read their za website and they have won loads of awards for excellence in skincare - what more could I ask LOL.

You can use it, its slightly stronger than a floral extract but still less than an astringent (sp?) which contain alot of alcohol.

Witch hazel is a natural astringent and its normally used for combination/oily skin. So I wouldn't recommend it as it can dry out the skin. I would probably say try rose water (neals yard do a good one).

Nimue is a lovely range, I agree. I think that when you find a range you like you should stick with it.

Another thing is, is that Nimue is an affordable range which doesn't break the bank. You know what us girlies are like handbags, shoes etc.....LOL.

For myself I choose to use alpha-h as I have a combination skin and I find that works for me.

toners do different things Depnding on the brand & skintype they are designed for. Generally they will enhance the benefits from your other products. For example I have oily skin. If I use just the cleanser & moisturiser I find my skin is starting to get oily after 3-4 hours, if I use cleanser, toner, moisturiser, it'll be about 8hrs, if I add in oil control serum I can get 12hrs.
If you use products that go together they work better if all used together. It all depends on te products & your needs, some peeps need a bit of extra help. Cleansing & moisturising ( & exfolliating weekly) are the most important, then you can add to that if you want. Toners also prepare the skin for moisturisers allowing them to be applied & absorbed easier.
Like any other product make sure it is suitable for you skin type. If you have dry skin make sure you use a toner for dry skin.

A good range for anti aging is Elemis - their cleansers and toners good VFM, and they do a really good cream too. Pro Collagen a bit expensive, but really does what it says on the tin (if you know what I mean), and will last about 3 - 4 months - its an face, neck and eye cream for day and night.

Once you've tried it you'd love it.

I suppose that cleaning yuor face with a bit of toner whenever you remember and splashing water on the face is not a good idea then? My routine in terrible. Combination skin, mid 30's. Any recommendations? btw, I like the sound of the Nimue range (how do you say it?)thanks in advance (and sorry for hijacking) xx

toner removes any last traces of cleanser u may have left on your skin -its important to use it before moisturising!! xx

The right balance for the skins pH is 5.5-5.6. Water is at 7 so it is recommended not to use just water on the skin as it can feel drying....
