Hi Geeks

I was talking to a hairdresser today, who tells me that she also does nails acrylics, gel sculpting and such. When I told her what i did she said thats a lot I dont think you can do all of those well ?? how many of you offer Massage, Beauty and nails ? and do you think you do it well ?

hi

what do you mean she said i dont think you can do all of those well? i do everything, manicures, pedicures, waxing, facials, nails, massage and i can do all of them well, there isnt an area that i cant do well. bit confused about that bit.

xxxxxx

I'm confused too chick xxx

Some people can and some people can't.
It's an individual thing.
I don't see why you couldn't.

If you practice and keep education current, and focus on details of everything, you shouldn't have problems.

I used to be a hairdresser. I was GOOD at it.
I used to be an office Admin for an Investment firm and wire-op trader (entered stock orders on stock market) and I was VERY good at it.
I have worked in a bar, and been GOOD at it.. I'm a good writer
I'm a great cook.
etc etc
I have a multitude of skills and talents at which I am GOOD and sometimes, great as I am SURE that you do too.

We can be good at a lot of different things.

As for being excellent..... that's a whole other debate

I dont think she was being rude, we had a long conversation and she just said how she had done a few courses and knew that she could not do them well enough to offer to clients. However I disagreed with her, I offer nails massage & beauty treats including spray tan. I find that if i do not give a treatment for a while I get a bit rusty, but I always have family and friends to try new things on and practise. I really just wanted to know if other therapist offer everything or do most of you specialise as she does?

Vhunter I like your reply I think that really does say it all:)

The only thing I don't offer but am qualified in is make-up. Just because I don't like doing it to be honest.
I went into hair when I left school and I don't think hair and beauty should be mixed. This is just My opinion though. I think this because hairdressers are more in your face, talking about anything and everything and beauty is a bit more reserved because it is relaxing and you cant chew your clients ears off.
I think by training in the treatments we offer, we have done so many at college and practised on so many people that it's like riding a bike, you just don't forget. Like you say if you haven't done a treatment for a while you may need to read over some notes or something but that doesn't mean you are no good at the treatment xxx

Thanks!! I think so too LOL
It's so true though... we are often good at a great many different things.
No reason why you can't offer multiple services and be good at them.

I don't do it all but i do a fair bit:

I do lash and brow tinting i know this procedure like the back of my hand and never have to think about what I'm doing i just know and i am good at it.
I do spray tanning and i also know this procedure like the back of my hand including all the contra-indications and what the client has to do before and after the tan and i am good at it.

But when it comes to nails i struggle at the moment as i haven't been trained long (think about 3-4 weeks now) so obviously i need papers near to me so i can check I'm following the procedure right etc

But just like everything in life you do it for so long and so many times you will eventually pick it up and remember everything you need to know.

IMO i think anyone can do a mutiple of treatments and after a while be able to do it all and be good at what they do its just about training the brain and getting into a routine it will eventually stick with you

xx

Alan you have got to be a one of a kind!! haha xxxxx

It depends on what is meant by good - I think most could do an acceptable standard in many areas (I used to do hair as well as beauty) but I realise that if you want to excel and be outstanding then it requires time, effort, excellent tuition and of course money into their chosen area and not everyone can put this into all they do. I would rather be a BT specialising in a few areas rather than try to do everything.:)

y'know gina, i think i am! haha!

I wholeheartedly agree here....mastering a skill takes time, and dedication...i have come to the conclusion in what comes to me naturally and i specialise in what areas i enjoy, rather than doing everything.

well you know the old saying "jack of all trades - master of none".

I used to think like that, thought you should specialise in just a handful of treatments, but my opinion has changed of late.

It got me thinking that I originally trained as a chef, and you can specialise, sous chef, pastry chef, etc, etc, but majority of chefs have to do everything. You wouldn't say to a chef that they could only cook 10 recipes and that is it!

I do a large variety of massage, healing and some beauty treatments. I love to learn....! I go on at least 3 courses a year as I love it so much. Their are some treatments that I just no I don't want to do (mani and pedi to name 2) as well as some holistic treatments too.

Perhaps your hairdresser should stand by what she says and only do hair and leave nails to nail technicans. Just a thought!

I always found it really strange that they taught a combo of hair and beauty at college anyhow. I can't imagine many hairdressers wanting to do beauty.

at my college hair and beauty is an uncertified? 6 month course, designed to give late school leavers the opportunity to see which they prefer...

i know i couldnt do hair and beauty together as a career though!

i plan to down my hairdressing scissors for ever in june! haha!

i love beauty (mostly nails) and im kicking myself now for choosing hair over beauty!

:)

I trained in both hair and beauty on a combined course, and am fully qualified in both. In practice I have always worked as a hairdresser as it was the field that i enjoyed the most. Handy to have a working knowledge of beauty tho.

Hi,

I am 21 and I have crammed in my training and worked so so hard over the last 5 years but it was all worth it because now I can offer everything. I love the flexibility of my work. And whatever I am doing, I can always recommend something to compliment it and I find clients love having everything done with one person and its handy e.g. when client hair colour is developing, they can have their eyebrows waxed or manicure..

I have done:
Hairdressing level 2 & 3
Beauty therapy level 2
Swedish massage level 3

Which obviously means I am all round hairdresser who can offer everything you could want for your hair. I do massage, waxing, facials, make up, eye enhancement treatments, pedicures, manicures and exfoliation.
I am going to do a course in spray tanning. I would like to do acrylics etc, but I feel this would be pushing it as I am mega busy as I am now.

I am opening a salon next month, so from that point of view - I believe its a major plus that I can offer a wide variety of treatments to get the money rolling in and I hopefully won't turn many people away because I haven't got the staff, because I can always do it if I am free.

I say definitely you be good at a variety of things - the main thing is how high your standards are and how hard you work in keeping those standards to the best they can be.

Sounds like jealousy to me

I offer all beauty treatments, Indian Head Massage, spray tanning, Reiki healing, and soon aromatherapy and refexology.

I was a trained nail tech for a while but didn't enjoy it, I found it rather stressful in fact which is the opposite to what I find with when I do therapies.

Who knows one day I may take up nails again. The way I see it is I didn't enjoy doing acrylics and to me I took too long ot make them cost effective. Doesn't mean to say I won't try doing another system one day I quite like the look of gel.

But for now I am happy learning and increasing my complementary therapies to go with my beauty treatments. All of which go down well together I have to say.

It's a competitive world esp when working for yourself, so the key is to learn and keep learning to keep you ahead of the field and competitive.
