following on from a previous thread : i mentioned that id like to offer eyelash extensions from home, but had no spare room and worried that it might not be very professional doing it in my lounge
another poster said it souldnt pose a problem as onlyoffering lashes, not waxing etc and the more i think about it the more im coming round to the idea of offering this service in a screened off area of my lounge (minus family members of course!) i would still offer to do it mobile, but this would work much better for me - would love to hear your views, or hear from anyone, see pics of anyone who works from home but in a room that is ordinarily used by the family - specially lounge area

Hi why not waxing? I don't have my salon any longer and offer my services in my home. Like you I also have no spare room. I have noone in my house during the week so I don't see it as a problem my clients like it. Some commented saying after a facial I have no makeup on or a brow and lip wax and I'm red I can get in my car and go home, I hated walking through the town shopping centre fromyour salon to my car. Everyone is different tho. When I have my clients my living room is made relaxing with candles, music and dimmed lightening unless waxing! I put out myliterature for them to browse through and after they can relax on my leather sofa with a nice drink.

thanks carla
thats great to hear, i am seriously going to look into doing this - just never occured to me to offer the service from home (havent trained it yet, but working out my business plan etc)
although im busy most sats with bridal makeup im at home all by myself 3 times a weeks, so it kind of makes sense .. have a new baby on the way, but my sister lives 4 doors away for no probs for baby sitting
can i ask, are most of your clients from your old salon ? have you aquired any new clients, and if so do you mention to them that treatments will be performed in your living room? also, do you do mobile
i appear to be making a big thing of this, but after reading so many posts whereby therapists are renting space, rooms, or working from their own spare rooms i was kind of feeling down about it and wondering how my husband and i could juggle the car midweek to offer mobile only - but i feel as if ive had a lightbulb moment and there is an answer to my dilemma after all
many thanks x

For hygiene as well as a host of other reasons, I would never offer any beauty service in my lounge room or kitchen.

I don't think offering beauty treatments in your lounge is very professional. I would stay mobile. It may work better for you. It would probably work better for all of us,as mobile is hard work but is it better for your client? xxx

I can honestly say it wouldn't worry me to have a facial or other treatment done in yours or anyone else's lounge, if a mobile therapist or nail tech came to my house they'd have to do the treatment in my lounge anyway. As long as its clean and inviting I'm happy. x

Okay, this is from someone that has done this many years ago and I hated it.I didn't feel professional,I know my clients didn't particularly like it as well. The whole ambience is lost when you have a Tv,settee, family pics etc sitting there while you're trying to perform a salon experience beauty treatment.
If you're happy with it and your clients are happy then that's good but for me I think if you want to create the right image then either have a room devoted to your beauty treatments or rent. I know it's what mobile therapists do but this isn't a mobile therapist, this is someone coming to your home thinking that they are going to be going into a beauty room, not your lounge, like I said if you and your clients are happy all's good Hth:hug:

thank you everyone for your feedback, all much appreciated
you've given me lots of food for thought xx

unhygenic? are you implying my house is dirty? or i do not carryout correct cleanliness after a client? both are not true, i carry out the same as i did in my salon if not more.
i dont have family pictures on the wall during salon times and as for a tv i know lots of salons with tvs on the wall like mine. i obviously do not have it on during massage, facials etc i have dimmed lights, candles and relaxing music exactly the same as in my salon
the tv can be on during nail extensions if the client so wishes.
i have one shelving unit which has retail and leaflets and price lists and i have posters and salon pictures. the only thing that gives it away that it is actually my living room is my sofa but it's like a home salon people have in their garden with the reception and beauty room together.
Don't get me wrong i would have a salon if i found the right one again. but for now this works fine.

Answering your question about my clients, some are from the salon most are new from word of mouth every week i get 3-4 new clients its going really well:biggrin:

i will post some pics when i get time hun for you to see

i sometimes use my lounge as some clients live to far so travel to me. i work mobile but this year am making the study into a home salon
i dont think its un hygeinic at all............ i do it in clients lounges all the time??!!??
and if anything my lounge is cleaner than some i go to,
i only do this on rare occasions though and wouldn't really suggest t as a business plan.... not unless you had a huge living room that you could part section off
hth xx

Even though I understand you guy defending home services and where you do them, unless you have a separate room for treatments is seemed quite tacky, almost Avon-esque. What next?.....

Toilet Tanning ?, who needs a tanning tent when you have a toilet?

Waxing in the wardrobe?

Holistic Hallways?

Beauty in the bathroom?

Gynaecologist Garage?

The industry has changed over the years and has driven many techs/therapists back home, but I'm sick of an industry I love practically driven underground with a clandestine feel.

Tupperware techs are charging less and less and the quality of clients has gone the same ..... so have the prices.

Whether you like it or not, eventually there will become an "us and them mentality" ...... now who/what/how do you want to be thought of ?

US or THEM?

Rather than being underground housewives/house-husbands which are looking more and more like tax free, tax dodging hounds, while the professionals try to make ends meet, why not lift the industry up and have a tad of decorum and professionalism?

GET A ROOM!!!!

I am thinking of doing the same and use a corner of my dining area when i have a client. looking forward to see your pic carla!!
just wondering though, do you set up and pack it all away everyday to turn it back to a living room or do you have an area set aside?
guess i'll see from the photos :)

Doing your treatments from lounge area just doesn’t look professional. Ok for a lip wax but I would not want to have a massage or facial. Is just not right.
