Don't they just love to scare monger to the public??

Read on and then see that they have proved nothing ... no way can they tell if these two women's benign skin spots were not caused by ordinary exposure to the sun. 2 women out of millions is no proof of anything at all.

The tiny amount of UV exposure in a UV Lamp for nails is SO minute and so minimal ... one would have more exposure in 10 minutes of sunbathing or just going about your business than in a life time of salon appointments.

I think it is important though, that all gel users should be ready with the answers to reassure their clients that the minimal exposure they have is not harmful at all. I was assured of this by a skin specialist when I asked a few years ago and I'm sure Doug Schoon would have something to say about it too.

I think this type of reporting is so irresponsible. They have absolutely no proof at all ... have done no testing at all ... and yet report it as if it is a done deal and then cause potential harm and agg to peoples' businesses. It really is scandalous.

Lol what ever next

What the heck are they scaremongering about now...if its not burnt toast its something else

Rest assured the UV output from the lamps you guy's use is so insignificant that it is virtually impossible to read on a UV out put meter ,you would probably have to stick your hand in one of these for about 25yrs before you even started to see a tan develope

Whatever next

Frankly, I am pretty disgusted by the article. The headline clearly states that Nail Salons will increase risk of cancer while in the same article they say there is no proof to support the claim.

I have emailed Doug for comment and I have left my own comment (I kind of doubt it will see the light of day though). Its stuff like this that really damages our industry. I say let each and every nail professional sue them for any loss of business that unsubstantiated article and headline caused!

Well before it was burnt toast (Collin) it was cups of tea! I kid you not! In the 80's it was all the rave to say drinking tea caused cancer (and now it is the best thing for us with all its antioxidants)! And coffee was some where in the mix as well.

I wonder, do they go around asking 10 people who have cancer what they've done/used in their lives and if there is any thing is the 'same'... then this must be the link!! ????

Pity the public read this stuff and ignore the 'no proof' part.

Either way, like I say to my partner - who tells me off for eating burnt toast - I'd rather die happy at 45 than live til 95 with out my burnt toast :green:

The Metro website has also posted an article about this, a bit shorter but still covers the points the other article did:

Nail salons ‘up risk of developing skin cancer’ | Metro.co.uk

2 people out of how-many-thousands isn't really much to base that sort of conclusion from. It's bad enough that some people are scared of getting L&P or pedicures done because they're led to believe it damages nails or gives you infections, and now they're going to get scared off gels as well? Very irresponsible articles!

LOL I do like my toast well done in the mornings....what the heck tomorrow im going to live dangerously and have two slices...does that double my risk

Seriously though I was the UK arm MD of an international consortium of UV lamp producers which accounted for about 75% of worldwide sales of UV lamps.

This consortium ,which included MR Wolff himself(the inventor of the sunbed), which in addition to servicing the beauty UV sector were active participants in the development of skin treatments using UV which we find in our hospitals to this very day.

Rest assured the use of the devices you guy's use on a daily basis is safer than eating toast...or for that matter plain bread

No mention of toe/foot cancer????

No mention of toe/foot cancer????

I thought the same!!!

Also does not mention any other lifestyle factors such as sunbeds etc.

For Gods Sake what a load of C R A P!

I was on a course at the weekend for Skin & SKin Cancer and the Doctor there said that UV Lamps were not responsible for the increase in Cancer.

For a start you have to be skin types 1-3 to be at risk. Anything over this rarely gets skin cancer. The reason we get Skin Cancer is every teeny amount of sun we get we expose our selves in skimpy clothes without sunscreen and in the belief that because we are don't see the sun often once or twice out in it, won't hurt us!

As for Nail Lamps causing Cancer its just another load of old tosh to throw on the heap with the swine and bird flu outbreaks and all the other scare mongering the press wish to do!

Everything will somehow kill you or have its side effects. I don't even bother with any of it anymore otherwise I would be a quivering reck in a padded cell on hunger strike, until someone found, chemical free, carcinogenic free and full of friendly bacteria thats packaged in safe environmentally aware packaging with no PPEs, etc!

And the women must have only had the nails on their right hand done

I have replied to the article too so we will see if any of our replies are actually allowed to be seen

""In a report on the two cases, Dr Deborah MacFarlane from the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston, said: 'The UV nail lamp is most commonly used to cure gel nails but is also used to cure acrylic nails and dry traditional nail polish""

She doesn't have a clue does she...?....unfortunately potential clients will see the word DR and think she knows it all.

i wonder if they ever realised that possibly both of the women with cancer, were right handed...

they could have a habit of sitting with they're hand out the car window when there sitting at traffic lights, or use that hand more when garderning!

i have had my hands in lamps an awful lot more than 8 times in 4months, and i havent even gotten a tan yet, nevermind anything else.

:)

At this rate we should all wrap ourselfs up in little bubbles and do nothing at all  lol

well I like my toast and meat very well done, so no hope for me then, oh I smoke too and used to drink loads, have burn't the candle at both ends too many times to remember !

These Doctors really peeve me off, they know diddley squat:mad:

Just don't go to any bbq's wearing a set of nails...
Who knows what could happen!!

Yet again another shocking report with no valid factual points, that tries to discredit our industry:irked: Why can't they get their facts right!

Does this mean then that we are going to stop getting these people that say gel is better for your nails! Give me strength!

Also, isn't it interesting that the posts below are mainly negative!
