I was just wondering how old everybody was when they eventually started to follow their dream........... I'm mobile at the mo inbetween my office job but dream of having my own salon. I'm 25 next week

How old were you when you got your own salon?

x

my dream is to be my own boss and to be comfortable money wise, 1 down 1 to go and i'm 27 )

My own nail desk at 18 and my own proper salon at 23.

xx

I work from home and started my training at the begining of the year at the young age of 51...lol..x

I was 34 when I started a home based salon and a year later I opened my first Nails Only salon called Designer Nails (It was a cool name then so don't laugh:lol:). I opened 2 more Designer Nail salons to make a total of 3 (yes I was a CHAIN!! said in my best Dolly Parton voice ... remember the scene in "Steel Magnolias"?) over the next couple of years.

wow....... guess i'm wrong for thinking i'm getting too old to start out then?!!!!

22 when I opened my own salon.

You are never too old .. in fact, age gives you allot more credibility in this business. The very young can be at a disadvantage there. There are always exceptions and the youngest person I ever trained was in fact only 16 and she was and is brilliant, but no one took her seriously for ages because of her tender years.

Have my own salon at 23 :)

No, as geeg said your never to old. I'm 53 ( certainly don't feel it) and started college a year ago along with doing en courses and now mobile.

The future, looking forward to doing lots more courses and hopefully in a couple of years would like to open a nail salon. So anyone whatever your age follow your dreams..xx

I agree with geeg here. I was lucky and still am to have financial backing if i need it. I made a lot of mistakes with my nail business because I was young and naive!

I opened my salon on credit cards (not something you should consider really but i was stupid). Luckily it paid off and I was in profit from the second month. The only downside is you struggle employing staff older than you! They tend to think they know best, which if they do is excellent because you can learn form them but it got too hard to discipline them for time off or errors or if you implemented something they didnt agree with!

With two kids back when I opened it i also had to work every hour I could and it wasnt easy. But it was worth it in the end!

My mums 55 and only considering now after years teaching to retrain as a therapist and work with me!

That is so true, because of my age clients assume I have been doing nails for years and have a lot more experience than I have. Even when I tell them how long I have been a nail tech, they still believe I will do a better job than a younger person that has been doing it for longer. Its just some peoples perceptions I guess. Nowt as queer as folk

I have just got my own salon. (Not open yet, three more weeks) I am 44. I qualified in July of this year. I agree, you are never too old and also about the young not being given credibility.

I entered the wonderful nail industry 4 years ago at the very young age of 43.

I have now just embarked on NVQ Level 2 at college and loving it.

I was around 13 when i first started attacking my friends nails with painted nail art,
did lots of other work from leaving school,
went on my first Creative nail course (foundation) when i was nearly 35 completed this one week before i turned 35 (birthday pressie to my self),
one week later rented a nail desk in a hairdressers,
6 months later bought my own salon, where i still am today 18 months later (age 37 now)
loved every bit of it all  even the hard work lol x

This year when i qualified with CND i was 38...............Best decision ever x

This thread has really cheered me up, when i'm sat there looking at the nails i've done wondering where it all went wrong or where I went wrong :irked: and then thinking to myself "who am I kidding, i'm too old to learn this, what's the point, by the time i'm any good i'll be drawing my pension " it's comforting to know it doesn't matter how old you are as long as you believe in yourself and keep reaching for your dream
I'm 34 btw :eek::eek:

I am 24 and just starting and excited to see what is in store for me!:)

I cannot believe that anyone at 34 feels that they are too old to start anything . You're Nowt but a child love. All my best achievements in business, the things I have been most proud of I have done since the age of 40. Crumbs you're just coming in to your own now .. enjoy it .. one of the best times of your life. It ain't over it's just starting.
