Hi all,

I'm new to Salon Geek.

Just wanted to get feedback on my new site I have had done for me.

I didn't even have to pay a huge amount up-front, costs me less than £7 a week and they designed it how I wanted and do any changes whenever I want.

Have a peek and tell me what you thinks please.

http://www.jessicas-salon.co.uk

have a cool wkend everyone

Jess

It's very modern looking. Seeing the first page made me think 'relaxing'
I'm liking the pics of the manicure.
Not too sure about the j on it's own down the bottom there.
The writing is short and sweet but informative at the same time.
You may want to change the wording of 'beauticians' hun, your a beauty therapist. Beauticians work behind the counter in boots. (no offense to them though)

I think you have done a lovely job. Well done you...I hope it brings you lots of business! xxx

It's a nice looking site. I like the image of the lady with the hot stones treatment. It's also one of the better sites I have seen so far in terms of HTML standards compliance - in fact there is just one XHTML validation issue, [Invalid] Markup Validation of http://www.jessicas-salon.co.uk/ - W3C Markup Validator - and a fairly trivial one at that. So on balance, a very well designed site.

Will you be adding more information to your site in due course, and would there be any extra charge for adding new pages on top of the £7 per week you are currently paying?

How are you finding the functionality they offer for online booking and managing your email marketing list incidentally? Is it easy to use?

I reall like it. It looks professional and makes me want to look more. I can;t give you any advice however i'm very much a novice. But ther are plenty of geeks on here who know there way around a website!!

Hi all,

Thanks for comments so far.

Yes I love it!!!

kylieb -- your comments are noted and I will ask them to change it-cheers hun.

kimbers81 -- thanks for that hun.

Ruth Mills -- Thanks I am made up with it. My online booking form goes straight to my email and I just check it regularly and email my customers back. Its real easy.

I will be adding more info as I get time to write it up for them. I can add a few more pages and as many changes for life to each page for my £7 p/week yes. I think if I go above 10 then its an extra £1, thats all.

My newsletter things goes to a database (look at me talking technical) and I just go to it and send out email to who I want.

Jess

Jess, thanks for the info. So it sounds like a relatively basic online booking system then - in terms of just sending you an email out; I imagine that more sophisticated systems would connect to an appointment book system and add the appointment automatically for you.

Hi Ruth,

Yes it is, if I had wanted it, and had the technology in my salon they could have set it up so my appointments on my website are done automatically but that may come later if things go well.

Cool, good stuff! Do they charge a lot more money for that though, and do you have to have special software in your salon too?

Hi Ruth,

Yes the software for the salon was expensive, cant remember how much as I dont want that right now.

The company who did my website just charge you a liitle extra the more features you want, easy peasy really.

Hi Ruth, what does 'validation issue' mean?

I like the web site too, it is so neat and clean and easy on the eye. Not too much noise going on if you know what I mean :) It is easy to navigate and very informative. Well Done & I wish every success!!!!

Hiya, it's a techie issue concerning the syntax of the XHTML code used for designing the web pages. It is better for cross-browser compatibility (i.e. the web site displaying correctly on as many different web browsers as possible) if the XHTML code conforms to the standards laid out by the W3C consortium - have a look at this Wikipedia article, XHTML - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But the only issue on the home page for jessicas-salon.co.uk was that they'd specified an align="right" attribute on an <img> tag, to make an image be aligned to the right-hand side of the page, which isn't allowed in XHTML Strict (they should be using CSS [Cascading Style Sheets] to do that instead). However, the vast majority of web browsers will know what align="right" means, and will do it anyway, even though it isn't really meant to be in an <img> tag within an XHTML Strict document.

I've had similar issues in the past when using Apache Struts2 (which is a Java library for designing interactive Web pages), which will sometimes generate XHTML code with a <div align="right"> in it, amongst other issues. However, I've since worked out how to change the template that it uses to render the page, and changed it to say <div style="text-align: right;"> instead - which will do the same thing but in an XHTML-compliant way.

Ooooo it's lovely!
Couple of punctuation errors, other than that it's really, really nice!
I'm just up the road from you in Kingsclere; if you want to come and have a nosey around my little salon it would be lovely to meet you.
:)

I think its brill well done xx

One enhancement that would be good is if when you hover over the "Treatments" link on the left, you get a sub-menu pop up with links to the other treatment pages for hair, eyes & facials, nails & feet, waxing and tanning.

That could be done using something like the Suckerfish Javascript library, or JQuery and Superfish. For an example of the latter, have a look at Permanently Natural - Professional Permanent Cosmetics, Yorkshire, UK. 07912 324073. where if you click on the links for "Permanent Make-up", "Hollywood Lashes" or "LVL Lashes", then you get a sub-menu with links to the other pages for those treatments.

Although for your site, it would look better if the sub-menu appeared to the right of the treatments link rather than below it...

Hi
Think your website is great. Could you please send me a PM and tell who did your website , as I would like to contact them myself. How much did yours cost?

There's a link to the web design company at the bottom of her site, it's called Salon Online, Salon Website Design | Salon Marketing by Salon Online - their cheapest package is £5.99 per week, which would work out at £311.48 per year (52 weeks).

Hi Joanm,

I have PM'd you with the details.

But as Ruth said you can find their website with the link at the bottom of my page.

I pay the £6.99 a week plan for mine as I have a newsletter sign up which is taken care of.

When I went getting quotes before I found Salon Online I was told around £800 upward mark.

With these I didnt pay anything at the start and get a website exactly how I wanted it. I can have things changed and added too whenever I want at no extra cost...cool!!!
