Today at work my client and I were both horrified to hear a 1 year old baby screaming the place down as her Mum held her down to have her ears pierced! I was astounded but the hairdressers couldnt understand why? Personally I think its barbaric to hold down a baby to put bolts through her ears - I found it distressing enough taking my daughter an injection. I wasnt allowed my ears pierced until I was a teenager which is the same rule I would use for my own daughter - am I old fashioned?

Just wondered how other Geeks feel about piercing Babys ears?
Do you do piercings how old does the child have to be for you to pierce?
Have your children got pierced ears and how old were they when they had them done?

i personally disagree with having childrens ears pierced until they're of an age when they can make their own mind up whether to have it or not.
My daughter had her ears pierced when she was 8 or 9, we had mega problems with them and ended up having to remove the earrings as she had an infection and her lobe had started to grow over the butterfly, I'm a bit wary of letting her have them done again.
Here in Spain, baby girls have their ears pierced within a couple of weeks of being born, ALL baby girls have stud earrings, it's a failsafe way of telling the sex of the baby if you're unsure.

That is gross! I dislike seeing babies and toddlers with studs in :(

My daughter wanted her ears pieced when she was 9 years old... she went to this salon and they did one and she totally freaked out... wouldn't have the other done! I had to bribe her with a Barbie doll to have the other one done so they would match.. sigh! Then when she was 11 she went to Portugal with her dad and he let her have her belly button pierced .... I was so annoyed. To this day she has not removed the bar to be cleaned or changed it over, she can't bring herself to take it out and wont let me take it out for her to clean it. I am totally amazed it has never got infected.

I don't like to see young children with earrings in. And the number of times I have been in Claire's Accesories seeing a wailing child trying to be bribed to have the other ear done is no odds to anybody. Mine weren't allowed to have theirs done until they were 12 and then we went to a place that specialises only in piercings.

This is quite a norm for West Indian culture - I grew up with a pair of ear piercings and I've added a few more to my ears.

I personally dont have a problem with piercing little girls' ears. However, I would probably choose to do it when they are a bit younger than a toddler. If she doesnt like it when she grows up, she can by all means allow them to be blocked up.

Ear piercings are done in an extremely modern and very effective way in this day and age.

My first ear piercings (which I have no recollection of) were done with a needle and a piece of thread that had to stay in place for a number of weeks.

I took my daughter when she was 8 months old, babies ear lobes are softer and she didnt even notice, I think it is up to the parent whether or not they feel its right or wrong really. I basically had trouble myself when I was about 7, and I ended up with years of trying to have them pierced, finally they stayed ok once I had reached 13 but this meant I actually had my ears pierced about 3 times. So I thought I would take my little one early on, to see whether or not her ears would stay pierced and of course at that age they dont fiddle with them either. Good post and it will be interesting to see other views and opinions.

Both my girls had their ears pierced at 18 months. The eldest had problems with the skin growing over the butterfly, so I took them out then got her ears done again at 3 yrs....she was fine, she did cry when they did the first piercing but she calmed down easy enough for the other ear. When she had them done the first time she didn't even notice what had happened, but she did when she was 3. Both of them don't remember anything about getting them done.

both of my daughters had theirs done young my mum took my eldest for her 2nd birthday and of course she did cry(for about 2 seconds till the lady gave her a lollypop),but she didnt scream the shop down and she loved showing off her earings to anybody who would look aferwards!
my youngest was about the same age but one of hers came out and she wouldnt let me put it back in ,and now she is 6 she really wants them done again but is too scared,so i think getting them done early was the right thing personally.

If I had girls I would wait until they decided they wanted them Luckily I had boys lol.

Personally i worry sick when I see babies with them in case they rip them out of their ears particularly hoops.

I personally think it is awful for babies and young children to be pierced.
In my opinion it is along the same lines as toddlers wearing thongs, young girls wearing mini skirts and knee high boots and kids plastered in make up and wearing t shirts with sexual slogans.

Children are children for such a short length of time - so let them be kids! Why do we have this culture of making children look like mini-adults?
Let them make their own decisions when they are old enough and responsible enough.

nope i think its awful to have a baby/toddlers ears pierced, cioz to me its more of a fashion accesory for the parents than the child, i think its horrid i would wait until mine are old enough to decide for themselves, i had mine done when i was 5 but i wanted em doing, have to say wasnt too impressed with the pain though  , but ii have got other piercings but i still dont think you should do it until the child is old enough , jmo :green:

I remember when my neice had her ears pierced, she was only about 1 year old, my god! she nearly screamed the place down, she was very distressed and her mum couldn't believe that she'd put her through the pain just for the sake of a little gold stud, we both felt so bad.

my daughter is 6 now and she will have her ears pierced when she comes to me and asks for them doing, and she will be warned it is not painless!

I have also seen babies crying in Claire's and it nearly brings me to tears, I did ask staff once why they do little babies and she just shrugged and said it's upto the parents.

DITTO!

When I see little babies having it done it makes me feel sick, I once saw this woman bribing her baby with chocolate to get her baby's second set of holes done, and she couldnt of been more than a year old.

Hope I havent offended anyone, but my opinion is that its wrong.

I would never ruin my toddlers perfect little ears! x x x

I know that it is the cultural norm for some people - asian women for example, and i am somewhat understanding of it under those circumstances.

However, i believe that it should not be done until the child is old enough to make up their own mind, which i think is about the age of 12. Younger than that and they won't really understand the longer term implications of it. When i was young i wanted to have my ears pierced but i even told other children i thought that they were wrong to have their ears pierced before they were 12. I waited until i was that age before i decided.

To be perfectly honest, i think that piercing a young infant's ears is tantamount to child abuse. You are inflicting unecessary pain on a helpless infant. It is not a really really serious injury - but it is an injury is being inflicted on a helpless child who has no choice, for a non-medical reason.

I think that piercing a young child's ears (before say, 4) is basically saying that you own them and have the right to decide to do that for them, without giving them any choice. I think that as adults and parents we are custodians of children, and need to make decisions for them that they are not yet able to make to the best of our ability - but in doing this we are overstepping the mark.

This will probably be deleted now as it seems that honest discussion about so called controversial topics are discouraged.

I would I think!

I don't see any reason why I wouldn't.
As a child I was made to wait until about 7 or 8 before my ears were pierced. I had to strop biting my nails first you see. (bribery)

But I was the only girl in my class for years that didn't have them done. I am not sure what things are like over there but in Australia I don't know anyone who doesn't have pierced ears (although I think mine need re doing because I haven't had earrings in for awhile)

Kids seem to have them done here at a very young age and i think as long as the studs are small and taseful and the parents watch them carefully and do correct home maintenance while they heal properly.

But in saying all this - I don't have kids yet so who knows what I'd do when they came along.

Just have to say this is not something I have ever experienced in the time that I have been on these forums!

My little girl had hers pierced when she was 5 1/2, she had asked on and off from the age of 4, but we waited until she asked lots of times just to make sure that she really wanted it done. I think that children should have them done once they are old enough to ask for themselves.

what does having a babies ears pierced honestly acheive?!?!

They are not old enough to wear a set of stunning diamonds in them, nor are they bothered about chosing earrings to match an outfit, so they cannot really appreciate them.

What happens if they catch one and it rips? surely that would cause problems.

I dont think ear piercing is any different to any other piercing, it is still making a hole and putting a foreign object in your body as 'ornamentation'. in fact, i hear of people having more problems with ear piercings (ie the butterfly backs dissapearing and having to have them removed by a doctor) than body piercings. you wouldnt get your babies navel pierced would you?

I cant see why any mum would want this done to their child...why cause them totally unnecessary pain! It makes me mad to think about it. Its bad enough taking little ones for their first injections! In my opinion it looks cheap on young children and it shouldnt be allowed until that child is at an age where they can decide for themselves if they want their ears piercing.
