About as far South as you can get!
Hey guys :)

As some of you may know, my laptop's hard drive gave up the ghost on me last weekend and have been suffering with hubby's cr*p one so far until I can get a new one to go in mine.

Anyway's, does anyone know if I would lose Microsoft Office as I have some files backed up on disc (only up until about 2 months ago though, no recent stuff/amendments etc ) but I don't have my original Microsoft disc? Would I have to buy a new one? Totally out of the question atm as sooooo skint (but happy :green:) Hubby's laptop doesn't have anything but notepad  (told you it was cr*p!) it's so slow, keeps losing connection even when I'm only about 4 foot away from the router and is generally ****e.

I can't wait to get mine back online again!

xx

I am really not much good with a computer, so just about everyone else will be able to give you "proper" advice, but I think you are going to have to purchase the microsoft package again. My laptop had a melt down over Xmas. It cost me a session with my IT chap, to no avail, nothing could be retrieved. A new laptop, new microsoft programs, new accounting package as my disk was not compatible with Vista (I previously ran WindowsXP). Also had problems trying to get it to connect to my wireless modem so ended up buying another modem and starting from sratch. But the good news was I had backed up regularly and was able to reload all my important files. Anyway good luck with your problem. I know how frustrating it can be.

If you're skint at the moment, then you could give OpenOffice a try, you can download it free from OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite and it should open most Microsoft Office files, so you should be able to get access to all your old documents.

Do you still have the licence key for Microsoft Office written down anywhere, or was it also with the installation CDs?

Thanks Rebecca sounds like you had a complete nightmare!

Ruth, thanks for that link, I'll check it out in a bit. I don't have either of them, they were 'lost in transit' along with a few other bits and pieces when we moved. I never even thought about it again until now

If you cant salvage your PC then yes afraid so!!!

I hate the fact PCs dont come with any decent software anymore, works is rubbish! I have office 2003 so use that on all my PC's then it gets free updates off the web.

If you do not have the original disk you will loose much of the Office functionality as the new installation needs to register into the Windows registry.

Cheers
