Hi Guys

I need to buy a good selection of makeup brushes for wedding makeups i have coming up soon - Can anyone suggest reasonably priced professional makeup brushes that will last??

While I'm on the subject - do any of you geeks use Lauren Lukes makeup?? If so how does it compare with other professional brands like mac/bobbi brown etc

Lisa

Hi Lisa

I'm afraid I've never used Lauren Luke's products so can't comment on them.

I love Mac and Nars brushes. As you're in London, I would get your Mac Pro membership sorted if you haven't already (Google it and you'll find an application form on their site). It's £25 per year and you'll get up to 40% discount on products and brushes. Then get yourself down to the Mac Pro store in Soho. They've got loads of experience in people setting up kits, so just tell them what kind of make-up you're planning on doing, what your budget is, and they'll set you up with the basics. Most of their stuff is on their website so you'll be able to go there with an idea of what you need. The discount obviously makes a big difference to the cost. But you do get what you pay for and good brushes will last if you take care of them. I went for some training the other week with a world-class make-up artist. She used mainly Mac and said that most of her brushes were over 10 years old and going strong.

I've got Nars brushes from Space NK in the past but there must be a more economical way of getting them!

Hi MOOmin - I went on to the website for MAC pro but it seems there is only an enrollment form for students? I am not studying in college - I already have an nvq??Am i not looking in the right place?

cant really comment on LL makeup as have never tried it ..
but, i can highly recommend louise young brushes for professional makeup application - she has a starter set for just £50, which is a fraction of the cost you'd pay for the same amt of brushes from a popular makeup brand - many mua, myself included have converted to these, try them see what you think

Louise Young Cosmetics

you can also buy starter sets from crown brushes, who i am reliably told make MAC brushes .. i have a few of their brushes and yes they are a nice quality too

Hey I would recomend mac or nars and if your on a budget sigma brushes. They dont have the same quality but better than others. Lauren Luke palettes are good for her eyeshadows thats about it tbh and she's releasing them seperately at some point. Primers and lip colours are too creamy, and eyeliner dry out too fast. Not worth it, if you want makeup on a budget the best I've found is nyx. But mac, illamasqua and nars will always be my favs xx

Hi

There's a student and professional discount - go for the professional one. The form is on there somewhere I promise! Or ring their info line and ask if you can't find one.

Their student discount only applies to people studying at a number of MAC-approved colleges/make-up schools. To be honest I don't know if any local college courses are covered, but ones at the big London make-up schools like the Academy of Freelance Make-up are.

Blush09 is right about Crown Brushes. I don't know if they make MAC brushes, but I bought some at the Excel beauty show in March and they're very good. x

crown brushes are great x

mac pro website have the for amd its about 25 quid to join and then a percentage off everyproduct x

hi... look on here ... brushes have to be made somwhere... on here you will notice mac beneifit etc look very simular...... and you can have your salon name put on your own brush.... me thinks the top companys do this... x ps they have just started selling ocd makeup. fab for weddings .

Royal Brush are also fantastic I bought some at the show last year and they are very high quality.

I also like the Face secret range in Sally's mainly the eyeshadow brushes, they have black handles not the wooden handled Mercia ones.

The louise young brushes are fabulous highly recommend them. Also have you tried sigma brushes? They ship from the usa, and are brilliant quality.

I use crown brushes - badger range is excellent. Also have a number of Kryolan brushes from Charles Fox, these are very nice!!

I agree with lots of the above posts. Having spent literally thousands on my makeup and hairup kit over the last few months, i've done my fair share of research!

Crown brushes are good. I haven't any myself, but my trainee got them thru college, and they are good quality.

Royal brushes are a fantastic cheapie option. Especially for kabuki and smudge brushes.

I have mainly...

Estee Lauder - The quality and look are second to none. Beautiful quality, hardly any shedding. Also estee lauder is MACs parent company, so you can be assured of quality.

Benefit - Lovely quality. Don't buy them all though.

GOSH - Great for a cheaper option, and can also be bought on the high street, from superdrug. Their Foundation brush is super soft, doesn't drag, and can really give the mac 190 a run for its money. At 10 its less than half the price too.

MAC - Well. I am a Macaholic lol. If you can, you should! Mac brushes are very expensive, from about £15 per brush, So what i'd suggest is getting yourself kitted out in a cheaper option, a crown set perhaps, and then start replacing your favourites/most used brushes with MAC alternatives as you start earning off it. Be very wary of ebay and elsewhere online for brush sets, esp MAC ones. Its very rare to get a set from MAC, ebay is rife with counterfeit. Not just MAC, but smashbox, bobbi brown etc too. It may seem like a too good to be true bargain when you see these sets, but thats usually it, they are usually too good to be true. I've been stung myself!!

For extra help on makeup go on Specktra.net. A dedicated makeup forum, they really know their makeup stuff on there, and you'll be surprised what you'll learn!

I'm not pro trained but i am a BIG fan of makeup!

If you're starting out, a cheaper option (as well as Crown brushes) may be E.L.F. Studio Brushes - ELF Cosmetics UK - Eyes Lips Face

I ordered 3 the other day based on reviews on MakeUpAlley - Makeupalley - Street Smart Beauty - Homepage and I have to say i'm seriously impressed! i ordered the Powder brush, Complexion Brush & the Blush Brush. They are SUPER soft, but still manage to pick up & distribute product, and so far, they've not shed any of the hairs...and that's with being washed. A compelte bargain for £3.50 each!

The only downside is they have a bit of a funky smell to them, but that's diminishing the more i air them.
