hi all

toying with the idea of getting a small dog like a Pomeranian or Chihuahua can any one else suggest a alittle dog that would like having a child around too

xx:hug:

One word for you! Westie! The toy dogs can be a bit nippy if you have a child about although I bet there are loads out there that are fine. Have a look at the westie group and you might find out how great they are. I have six! x

oh claire yes i have looked in to this dog as well

i see in your picture the dog has been groomed can westie have the short haired look as im not keen on all the white hairs in my house

I dont know too much about small dogs, mine's a german shepherd, and a big one at that. Having said that, she is excellent with children, I wouldnt hesitate to recommend one as a family pet provided you have the time to put into the training and the patience since GSD's are juveniles for much longer than any other breed of dog.

As far as small dogs go, I absolutely love jack russels. They have a lovely temperament and they are cheeky little chaps with lovely personalities:green:

Hiya - some westie people love having the dog with the orginal "ball" head and long side skirts, but I prefer mine clipped as they prefer it (much much cooler!) and also it means less grooming and no dirty bottoms if you know what I mean!

I really think that the Westie is a great family dog. They are fantastic to be around, so funny and can walk until you fall over, or just be content to laze around in the garden!

Feel free to ask me any questions as I love them to bits, so much so we are going to start breeding them!
x

A friend of mine has a little yorkie and it can't stand her two boys aged 5 and 8 it's always nipping..mind you they tease the poor little love senseless .i was looking into getting a chihuahua a while back ,i do have a small kitten but still thinking about it ...but much prefer the scotties and westies

i copied some info about Chihuahua's that i got through email from an enquiry i made i was also advised that when veiwing any dog it is best to see them with the parents and the type of environment they are in.

Chihuahua's are highly intelligent and quite nosy, they love to investigate. Their exercise area must be fenced securely. They do need a stimulating environment inside and outside, toys to play with, and company. When possible they like the companionship of another dog preferably of the same breed, as well as the company of its owner. To be shut in an empty house for hours on end with no companion is torturous for a chihuahua.

They are highly intelligent and have a high I.Q. (for a dog). With love and friendly discipline chihuahua's are eminently trainable. Taking time and trouble to train a chi will be very rewarding. It should easily master a vocabulary of commands like no, down, sit, quiet, out, come, bedtime and of course good dog or bad dog as appropriate. Fetch might prove more of a problem, they are not natural retrievers. They are just as likely to regard you with an expression that plainly says "you threw it, so you fetch it". be warned they do have a very independent streak.

couldn't resist adding this pic of a Pallion

Hiya ! i have a cavalier king charles he is the best dog ever !!! he is fantastic with the girls and my nephew is only 8 months and pulls his ears and all sorts and all rex does is kiss him ! two of my friends got one after me and they say the they are fab !!! i also get him groomed and he looks lovely i will try and put his picture on my profile xxx

We would recommend a Pug. They are such comical jolly little dogs and will probably put up with more from a child than a Chiuahua (damn I can't spell that word!) would. When they're not running around being the joker, they love a nice cuddle on the sofa and are quite chilled out most of the time (ours is anyway).

If you do get a Pug, please tell me if it also barks at "Eliza's Aria" by Elena Kats-Chernin (or "The Journey Continues" by Mark Brown & Sarah Cracknell which samples said tune) - otherwise known as the tune from the Lloyds TSB advert - as our Pug goes wild when that comes on the hi-fi...

Italian Greyhounds are very small and greyhound like

Hi,
I Have two chihuahuas. I Love them to death.
I Think, (this is just from my experience) IF you get them from the right breeder. My little black one, she came from a lady who lived on a huge peice of land with 40 other chihuahua's, the breeder's dogs are her passion and would run around and play with them every minute of the day and my dog is the most gentle yet, playful dog ever, Excited energetic thing out! My Little white one, we got her from a breeder who was very stricked on the dogs - certian times to go toliet, feed.. which is sad - but she was very shaky and scared - and takes awhile to warm up to people, But within the family shes very loving, and playful. its quite strange.. But she has just got so much better.. Shes more like a old ladys dog.:lick: So i really think it is important where you get your dog from.

Both of my dogs grew up with my godson. & They both love him, when other little children come over, the white one will just sit and sleep and the brown one just wants to play. they have never bitten anyone.

I think if you go to the right breader and get them young, so they can grow up with the children too.

I love the pics! They're fab.

What about a Jack Russel?

Bichon Frise are the most beautifull little dogs (we had paid a deposit on one,but i have found another home for it when it's born,a new baby and a puppy would be a nightmare)

They love company, children included, they need little exersise and are hypo allergenic as they don't have fur they have wool,so great for allergy/asthma sufferers, they are a perfect little family dog, however they don't like being left alone so much and need grooming at least every other day.The need specialist shampoo and tear stain remover and they also need a trip to the hairdressers approx every 6 weeks. Use googl images and you'll fall in love, they're like little teddy bears. As adults there are different "cuts" so they can look how you want them to. I'm waffling but there isn't much i don't know about this breed so if you want anymore info, give me a shout :D

PS just be weary of where you buy from, certain breeds are renowned for being puppy farmed. You will pay more than you see them advertised for but you get a health and temperament gaurentee, from a respectable breeder you can expect to pay approx £700,it sounds like a lot i know, but farmed pup's will cost you twice that in vet bills within the first six months, and often don't make it. Alternatively you could rescue one, google Bichon Frise Rescue hth's xxxxx

Im with Adele on this one, westie's are the best!!
