I'm training and almost finished. Starting to buy my flyers and set up my fb page and building up my stocks of polishes. Next week will be a week spent with my nails and colour pops perfecting my nail art and photographing.

I need to start earning so I can afford my gel polish range and lamp (still undecided what one to go with) and my gel enhancement training.

Also got my first meeting with my business advisor in just over a week to find out about tax, Ni and all that jazz.

I'm trying to get an idea of what proportion of geeks are working professionals full time or part time mobiles etc or students ... so far I do not think I am getting a true picture of our community .... I think the pros are responding and the students are not because I suspect there are many more students here then is suggested by the figures proportionally.

I agree Geeg.

I consider myself a pro. I've been qualified and working for seven years. I am currently working for myself, renting a beauty room within a hairdressers, so i checked the renting box xx

I have been qualified in nails since jan 2010,practiced whilst working in a different job to save, and went full time mobile properly in August 2011 since I have added shellac,Hollywood toes and lashes to my list of qualifications.

Qualified in Tanning august 2011.

Have been mobile for the last year but have now gone into a salon renting a table/room as I need a more stable income and environment :) x

Done - work (too much!) in my own (high street) salon!!!

I qualified last July (itec diploma in beauty)and set up my own mobile business in December adding Shellac and tanning along the way as well as a few other workshops in advanced bridal make up, nail art etc.
Business is going well, starting to think about maybe renting a room but want to be in the right place. Working full time as it stands and though it's tiring I know I made the right decision in working for myself!
Wanting to expand my knowledge and skills more with CND so looking forward to doing a few more of their courses.

I've been qualified for a while but lack confidence and even find it difficult to practice on some of my friends!

I think my current job and living situation is sapping my confidence as I am very unhappy in both.

I need to "man up" (as everyone quite rightly keeps telling me).
So, I've booked a conversion course and I am about to research local salons in the area to see if I can get some type of work and also get a Facebook page going. Just need to BLOODY GET ON WITH IT!!!

Just done the poll! :)
I qualified 8 years ago & always worked in salons & spas!
Absolutely love all things beauty & nails!!!
I'm currently mobile working towards converting my conservatory into a home salon! Very exciting & I just want to thank everyone who posts on salon geek offering professional, sound advice!! I am now fully addicted to this site!!! Whoops :)

I'm a recent mobile to Salon convert. Renting space within a hairdressers and loving it. At the minute I see clients 3 days a week and train up to 3 days a week, a really nice balance.

But if I'm honest, I'd love to be an eternal student! Learning learning and learning a bit more!

Thank you to all those who are responding ... keep it coming.

Been a nail tech since 2005. Trained with CND. Working part time mobile, home then rented a room whilst having 3 children. Just went back to renting a room in January.(after baby number 3).

Just gone full time, whilst husband is now looking after the kids full time and is starting a degree in October!

Rent a room in a busy hairdressers on a busy main road in Berwick-upon-Tweed. I specialise in hand/foot care and spray tanning. Want to do my CND masters and ITEC.

Happy bunny!

I started with EN couple of years ago then managed to get a gel conversion with CND.
I do have a little mobile business with shellac but have a full time job in a travel agent.
I'm booked on the CND complete course starting August because I feel for me personally to become more successful I need to go back to basics, include the business side and increase my confidence. Having CND behind me will give me all that.

My plan is after I get my ITEC then I will have the knowledge and confidence to make the leap and have my own salon as home. The room is being worked upon as we speak.

And of course next month meeting Gigi in Manchester will be the start of all the fab stuff to come.

Vicki xx

I've selected student although I actually finish college in 4weeks ish.

I've had a year in college and practising on friends and family, now I'm almost finished this year I'm actually having a few wobbles about going out on the public.
I'm sure I'll get over the initial wobble tho ;)

I'm looking into going back to college next year to do my NVQ3

My friend owns a salon and rents out her chairs for a daily price so I have that option when I am ready also.

More courses and learning is deffinatly in my future.

I qualified last year, after so long trying to find a job with no such luck I'm working with the princes trust to start my own business :) still working on friends and family to upkeep and improve my skills

Employed, after a long struggle but could really do with more work as I do not have enough hours so considering doing a CND conversion course to refresh my skills and doing nails etc mobile to earn a bit more. Just want to do the house up and go on a few holidays, not too much :)

I've been working in the beauty business since 2002. Became a geek in 2006 :D Worked as an employee for 8 years, and have been self employed for almost 2 years.

Been working from home for the last 7 years, after a couple of years mobile till my nerves could stand it no longer :eek:no salon experience whatsoever . . . in fact I've never even had my nails done my anyone except me!

Loved every minute and still do, perfect as the kids have been growing up as it's a flexible business if you want it to be.

been brandishing a file, waxing spat and tweezers since 1990 when i got my itec, cibtac and cidesco .

opened my first salon in 1992 after working in a salon for 1 year. sold it in 1997 when i moved.

opened my now salon in 1997 and firmly believe i will die with one of the above items in my hand.

i love it. it never gets boring .

so far this year i have done 5 one day courses with another 4 in the pipeline.

improving and learning .....never ending.
