Hi

I am a 32 yr old guy based in Manchester. I am now a hypnotherapist (look into my eyes!) but am very interested in training to be a hairdresser - this is something I wanted to do at college but did not then have the confidence - I also had an uber male dad who threatened to give me a "good hiding" if I became a hairdresser :)

What I want to know is this: is 32 too old to do this? On the minus side I am a short, ugly slap-head, but on the plus side I am good with people and I am quite creative (a degree in fine art) Any thoughts would be really appreciated, is this a dream too far. I'd rather know now before spending 2k and 1 - 2 years learning a job I have no hope of getting!

OMG 32 you must be registering for your zimmer frame are you LOL.

I was 38 when I moved to this industry!

Not everyone wants their hair done my a young person who sometimes cannot relate to them on an age level.

If it is something you want to do and have a passion for then this will come through and any salon would be lucky to have you so I say go for it!

It's only a dream if you let it be only a dream. There is absolutely no reason you can't do it unless you let fear and your own self doubts stand in your way. I don't know about being a slap-head but I can certainly give you a good slap up-side the head :smack:.

ROFLMAO it is never too late to follow your dreams,
your in your prime at 32, go for it

Just to say a big thanks to everyone for replying. I think that is a resounding "go for it" - Thanks

Heavens - I was 44 when I became a beauty therapist full time!
You have so much to offer as a more mature stylist; people skills and life experience are priceless.
Think about where you want to be and tailor your training to get you there.

Hi,
Get out there and follow your dream, we only live once.:smack: That's a slap from me.
Do it. You will be fine. You are never to old to change your life. As long as you can manage your commitments while you train then get out into the big wonderful world and let them know you are here.
Best wishes
Lotsa luv x   x

You can do anything you want to do! If you really, really want it then you can have it. If it means having to try really hard and your prepared to do it and appreciate it more.

I've done all sorts of things that were a bit different, it was hard but well worth it in the end! xxx

last year I was the manager of a hair nails & beauty salon and one of my best staff was a mature lady on work experience she had always wanted a job as a hairdresser and decided to go for it and was having a ball. She was only there 2 weeks and she changed the hair salon with her professional attitude! Go for it You'll love it

Absolutely not too OLD. I have had 3 major career changes since leaving school and all to suit my needs at the time,

1, Free & single - worked with kids
2, Married & children - office management
3, ME TIME - Nails & beauty.

I have never been happier than I am now working in this industry - a dream is only a dream until you make it real! Go for it and Good luck. :)

I am 36 and have just started my hairdressing training , and i am far from the oldest in my group. Go for it.

Today I just drove to a salon half an hour away (where I used to live) to get my hair highlighted cut and blow dried, as the girls there are in their 30s and the owner a young 50-something, because I feel far more relaxed spending 3 hours there than in a salon with a bunch of youngsters.

I don't think age matters in a career like hairdressing. Although I want decent stylist that is only half of it - you need to feel relaxed and comfortable with whoever is doing your hair.

By the way my hair looks great now, thanks Ayse at Starz in Peckham!
