Using talc on waxing?

Anyway, if talc is so dangerous why is it still used in so many beauty products - its the second highest ingredient in Dermalogica's Daily Microexfoliant, so it can't be that bad surely?!

Actually, there is a lot of concern about companies using talc in their products. Companies that use talc are being boycotted, makeup containing talc is being crossed off the 'to buy' list. Mineral makeups are so popular b/c the 'natural' ones contain NO talc. The fact is there are over 1000 ingredients banned for use in beauty products in Europe (inc talc) and only 10 ingredients banned in the USA, UK & Oz ...

... aside from that, I was talking to my brother last night who is a chemist and he was explaining that yes talc does have finer particles and can be breathed in to our lungs and clog up our respiratory system (which is what asbestos does), but my brother was telling me, you need to be exposed to particles so fine you can't see them and for long and constant periods of time before any damage occurs.
True cornflour has a heavier ratio and is less likely to have invisible fly away particles that we could breath in.
I guess, the beauty industry regulators would rather be safe than sorry which is why they've banned talc - b/c remember once upon a time people thought asbestos was safe :)

I use a light oil myself... but even then perhaps we'll see a thread on here in 30 years time saying olive oil's not safe :wink2: ha ha

...Apart from certain high street brands of mineral makeup. Always check the label, I say.

sounds like they are just trying to cover themselves just incase hun. I would use whatever you feel comfortable with.
If we stopped doing, eating and using all the things that can cause cancer we wouldn't eat and just stay in bed!!

I do a lot of sugaring and can't use talc as it breaks down the sugar so I use corn starch.

baby organic talc is made from corn so not chalky dust and better for babies and clients
hope that helps
xx

Could use cornflower instead of talc. Can you use this oil with warm wax or just hot wax?

Okay. Lets just all kill ourselves now and be done with it. Saves being exposed to all the things that might kill us....for goodness sake!

When I did my reflexology training in the UK back in 2005 we were banned from using talc but told to use cornstarch based products.
Here in Australia, Johnsons & Johnsons have a cornstarch 'talc' which I now use for my clients when I feel I need talc opposed to oil, ie when I've got a sweaty one! Yes it is more expensive but at least it is a guilt free option if you particuarly like your 'talc'.

They told us to use talc at college.

Im doomed, i use talc lots and lots on myself. I love the stuff. Good enough for baby then its good enough for me.
If it was a serious health risk surely it would be removed from the shops.

Apparently everything can kill nowadays... Which may be true, but if i listened to all the theorys i would be scared to leave my house.

i think i have asked this before but how does the wax stick to the hair if its oily? xx

You can use oil with any kind of wax.

Can I just ask which oil, could you use baby oil for instance? Also is it just for use with the Berins Wax or other makes. Thankyou!!

You can use oil under any wax line. I use the Berins Jasmine oil, but where I used to work, we used a generic light massage oil with Tea tree oil in it.

Well, I love a good debate and I have to say until it is against the law or any new policy written , I shall be using talc, being a sugarer, I have to.

I feel there will always be something telling us about something that is bad for us.

I just had to let you all read this, some of you probably have seen it do the rounds...
If you were born in the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s, please read on………..

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos.

Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with.
We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY ,
no video/dvd films,
no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time...

We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays,

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on MERIT

Our teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and bully's always ruled the playground at school.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL !

My god i may not have been born in any of these eras hahahahaha but im in love with this post!!! n all of it is sooooo damn true if the worlds media is not careful were all going to become recluses because were to scared to go out incase we catch something or incase the air turns bad n causes some other nasty dieseases :irked:

I use talc and have done for 9 years. I was told that you use talc after pre lotion to make sure that the area was dry. Any moisture on the skin and the wax wouldn't stick to the surface. Was to use it more for underarm and bikini areas, because you sweat more there to make sure that there was plenty of talc to dry up the moisture. So that is why have used it and I do know that not many places use it.

I did hear years ago that you shouldn't use talc because of a low risk of cancer but unforuntaely everything we do right now in life, you have a risk of something or another. Life is for living not worring about something that may or may not happen. And there is a low risk of breast cancer from deodrant, but no one is staying clear of that and you don't hear much about it because it is a low risk.

Some people have mentioned an oil, what is the oil you use and how does it work???

I was under the understanding that we use a talc to dry up moisture other wise the wax won't stick and I thought that any oil on the skin the wax won't stick so you won't remove any hairs.

I'm an oil man, myself. Any small mollecule carrier oil will do. Almond oil is great. afaik, the Perron Rigot & Berins prewax oils are based on this.

Cleansing before oiling will ensure the client is dry and clean.

I read it here so I can't claim it - but remember to apply your oil very sparingly - you're not dressing a salad :) !! Just a waft will be plenty. If the wax starts sliding off then you've got too much on. Tissue off and try again. Practice on yourself/Mum/friend/cat first!

hi i have a quick question, i was at a specialist waxing class, for Brazilian waxing last Sunday and i was told you cant use talc any more when waxing!

does any one know any thing about this???

mmmm thats strange i was taught to use pre wax and then the talc (opptionall) which helps lifting of the hairs.
Was tought recently 2 months ago did the course regestred by "The guild"

I was trained not to use talc but I could still use cornstarch- amber products has a nice finely milled one- but ive ditched them both for a very very light coat of EVOO...much better results!

Damn guys....this is crazy....everything is a risk!! its insane!

Its like that massive paraben scare a few years ago....now please correct me if I am wrong but after looking in to it im sure there was 1 test done on 1 type of paraben that found a possible risk to cancer....there are thousands of parabens around us everywhere. Global leading skincare brands still use them and if there was that much of a risk im sure there would have been a global ban!

Oh well if they are inforcing changes then I gues we all may as well get used to it. I sure as hell dont want to get fined!

How times are changing!!!!

Next they will make safety bubbles that we all incase ourselves in 24/7:!:

I'm slightly concerned about this as I have literally just qualified in Beauty therapy and we used talc. If things were gong to change like this then why were we trained like that at all?
My other point is that it holds a tiny risk yet we are suddenly no longer allowed to use it, yet sun beds are still in use??
